- Fitting out our self-built narrowboat all in one timelapse! If you’re new to the channel, we’re Jack and Gabby. We bought this narrowboat shell in autumn 2022 and we’ve been transforming her into our fully electric off-grid home. This timelapse shows everything we’ve done in the last six or so months, in just over ten minutes!
We’re almost there. This is our narrowboat build so far.

ABOUT US
We're Jack and Gabby. Since 2019 we've lived an alternative lifestyle travelling the canals of the UK.
Truthfully, we had wanted to find a slower, more simplistic way of life for a while. But, it was a shock redundancy that gave us the final push. We stumbled across boatlife and haven't looked back since.
Living on a narrowboat is not without its challenges. For example, the lifestyle is fully off-grid so we have to manage our resources such as power and water. For us though, boatlife has provided that 'real' life that we were desperately craving.
If you enjoy this video, we'd love for you to see our other vlogs. We have a playlist of each episode in order here:

It is hard to believe how much you have put into this project, and the most amazing thing is that you are still talking to each other! The stresses of what you are undertaking must have been way more than you anticipated but watching this video just shows how far you gave come. I hope that the hull situation is remedied soon and we can see you back on the water and beavering away to completion. Total admiration.😊
Thank you Ian! Such a lovely comment to read :) I think our slower approach to getting the project complete helps with tolerating each other's mood swings and stresses from the build haha! Thank you for watching!
Gosh, seeing all the progress put together like this really shows how far you’ve come. You’re doing so well - now to get it finished!! 😊
That's the plan! We still have a few weeks till the boat's out of the paint shed so making the most of it by spending time with friends :)
You are definitely getting there! It’s been fun watching.
Thank you! It's a long old road but we're getting there :)
You've done amazing things with your empty shell, the boat is starting to come alive.💚
Thank you Sheila! She's getting there, can't wait to be back on board once the paint job has been finished
Amazing transformation,it’s been hard work but you’re still speaking to each other, amazing teamwork. Looking forward to seeing more of your journey together on the waterways. xxxx
Hey Shirley! Thank you for watching! It's a slow journey but that's probably how we're still speaking to each other haha. Getting it done little by little :)
Just noticed this brilliant well done to both of you.
Love seeing it all in one reel. It’s spectacular and those floors are 💯.
They're great aren't they! It's been really lovely watching this video for us too, just to see it all come together
You’ve both achieved so much. It’s really coming together now. Take care. Nick
Thanks so much Nick! It's a good reminder of how much we've done...surely over half way?!
Looks so awesome! Great to reflect back and see how much you've accomplished. Fabulous!
Thanks so much! 😊 It was good fun making this video. Really lovely looking back and seeing how far the boat has come along. Thank you for watching :)
Your doing a fantastic job guys, I'm envious of your way of life, so chilled well done 👏
Thank you Colin! It can be a bit up an down sometimes, but that's life isn't it? Thanks for watching :)
What an amazing journey you're on! Great vid - thanks for sharing your life with us ❤
Thank you! It's taking a little while but we're getting there slowly 🙂
We are having our hybrid fitted out. We looked at the lynch motors but alas they weren’t interested in supplying us, shame we liked it. Can’t wait to see its completion. You’ve done a fantastic job. Big congratulations for all your hard work 🍾
Hey Marianne! Thank you so much for watching. It's honestly a long, slow process but we are getting there. I've been impressed with the lynch motor so it's a shame they weren't able to help you out! Who have you gone for instead? Jack
@@thistinylife we have a hybrid marine set up. Should have 2kw of solar too. Hubbies an electrician and we've been running the house on solar and batteries now for 18 months hardly using mains electric. Keep up good work it looks lovely
Wow you both are doing a fantastic job doing on your boat. It was lovely watching from the start.Have a lovely week all three of you.😊😊🐶
Thank you Sally! It's been really lovely watching the videos back to make this vlog! Looking forward to being back on the boat once the paint work is finished to crack on with the rest of the jobs 🙂
@@thistinylife Thank you so much for sending messages back I am over the 🌙.🦴😊😊
Well Done Both. Great watch, bringing all your efforts together. 👍X🐰x
Thanks so much! 😊
You guys have done such a great job 👏
Thank you Charis 😀 Hope you're well xx
Great work well done 😊lovely video 😊thank you
Thanks Rick 🙏
Slowly starting with a boat builder atm, all fun & games.
Following on from your dodgy paint video I was shocked how many builders dont offer grit blasting colecraft told me they almost never do it!
I’m going with a Nottingham company but bare shell only I think! So many decisions
There are lot of decisions to make, even before you consider planning out your interior. One thing I would suggest is speaking to a surveyor... If we do this again we'd like to find someone who would be happy to oversee the build process. They will basically check in every now and again with builders 🙂 It's an extra peace of mind!
Oh, how I remember The Stove…!
I guess you will see how well the solar panels work in the hot Winter British sun, eh…?
Haha the weather has been ideal for testing them out hasn't it!
Looking Good !
Thank you!
Great job.
Awww you have done so much proud of you hope all is well hope u back soon tc now your oldies 🤗🤗🤗🤗
Thank you Ann! Hopefully not much longer till she's out the paint shed and we can finish off the project!
You are both amazing! 😊
Oh thank you! It's funny looking back at it all, its too easy to forget how much we've done!
👍
Loving this. So what I’d love to do tho I’m no good at diy so it would be built lol. You are soooo talented and make look soooooo easy. Every best wish. ❤
We started this without having done much DIY so you could do it!! Just takes a LOT of perseverance 😅 thank you 🙏
@@thistinylife lol if I did it would totally be held together by ‘ use no nails ‘ lol. Best wishes.
Next time you referbish maybe you should adopt the Japanese style where all the walls are made of paper 😎😎😎
Not sure how that would hold up behind the fire!
Hey. Luv your vlogs. What type of timber did you do for your ceiling please? And, did you spray fosm ypur indulayion yourselves? I have spent a lot of time watching your vuds enchanting.
Hey Louise - thank you 🥰 our ceiling is just pine cladding!
Now that you are expecting a baby do you think you would have planned a different layout for your boat before you started fitting it?
We would probably have made the study area a little bigger, the plan was for that to double up as a little ones room in the long run, an extra couple of feet would have helped but the layout will be ok as is 🙂
@@thistinylife I'm sure you'll make it work 🙂. I'm looking forward to you getting the boat back and seeing some more DIY videos!
