@@keithsmith4780 What's your point? SA was a prolific songwriter whether or not anyone today remembers it! People under 70 years old don't know anything beyond what's posted on their FB page or Twitter feed and those who are older are losing their memory! Besides, you'd be hard pressed to find anyone under 70 years old who has even heard of Steve Allen or Mort Sahl or Lenny Bruce or Shecky Green! Give it another 10 years and no one under 30 will know who George Carlin was! Not knowing anything about the history of any subject has become an American tradition!
@@keithsmith4780 How many songs can you name by Schubert, Mendelssohn, Tchaikovsky. So apparently greatness is not measured by your familiarity with the subject.
I think I saw this when it first aired. My first Mort experience. I was expecting something different after Steve explained the part about him being a "sick" comic in the Lenny Bruce mold. Mort could have been a Boy Scout troopmaster without changing his act.
That same skit was used when He was at the hungry eye and Lenny was at the purple onion when the doctor confronted him about somebodys copying his material.
Mort Sahl. Our only contemporary political philosopher. That's an appropriate tagline. Coming from Steve Allen, a bit of a social philosopher himself, that is high praise, indeed.
Steve Allen was also quite conservative in comedy at the same time so to earn his admiration was quite a thing. He did not understand Richard Pryor, and it sounds like he respected Lenny Bruce! At the same time of being conservative, he was quite open to new developments like putting on Jerry Lee Lewis twice. Compare that with the highly rigid Ed Sullivan, not that he was much of an entertainer.
Steve Allen and Mort Sahl were only "philosophers" if you're being really generous with that word. Fact that anyone finds them even notable or impressive in that way is more of a statement of their own limited horizons intellectually. They're entertainers-comics-who sometimes had opinions on political and/or cultural/social issues and did observational commentary on it. This idea that that's "revolutionary" or "philosophy" is ridiculous. It's basically just punditry or being like a talking head on TV. They…had opinions on stuff going on in the world, like we all do. Sahl also had ill conceived conspiracies about the JFK assassination. Straight up juvenile to act like stuff like that, or the bunch of other ignorant things he believed and stated in his act, are profound "philosopers" words or whatever. He could be as ignorant as any of the rest of us.
Media history really ought to give Steve Allen more kudos, particularly for giving time to people such as Sahl and Bruce.

That was a terrific episode 😂it's cool watching it again on these channels. Oops did I just date myself
i was just thinking the same thing... most talk show hosts would never have done that..
And don't forget Jack Kerouac and a young Bob Dylan !!
not only comedians but musicians like Frank Zappa - you would never see that on any other mainstreem tv show
@@kevinwilliams6103 Zappa was on other mainstream shows of the era you can watch them here on youtube
A true legend. Thanks for posting this. I hope Mort can continue to work in northern Calif. from time to time.
Does anyone remember one of Lenny Bruce bits where he was getting busted and the cops asked him his name. Lenny said, yes, it's Mort Sahl !
Yes, I have it :)
that was an awesome story he told.. what a good friend to have
Brilliant. Both Steve Allen and Mort

Mort Sahl did a radio show broadcast in Washington, DC.
This looks like a whole evening devoted to Lenny Bruce! WHERE is the rest of it?? Must see! My appetite is whetted.

gawwwd bless Mr. Allen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Who, btw, is the most prolific song-writer in history!
Can anybody name three of his songs?

I miss Steve.
Mort is brutal; straight to the point and never went to court. He's old. Alive. I'm not knocking Mort, he's brilliant.
I'm just pointing out s fact.
🤔

mort sahl was a total original, not like lenny who was much more counter culture. the causal clothes, antishowbiz, great insights.
Richard Pryor has mentioned Lenny Bruce.
Pryor owes his entire act to Bruce

Lenny Bruce credits Joe Ancis as being one of his biggest influences
he really stole Joe Maney but started trying to be like Mort Sahl (and told Banducci he'd be the next Mort Sahl)
I Aim for the Stars, but sometimes I hit London; Mort Sahl's take on Werner VonBraun's book "I Aim for the Stars".
