I always thought that this was Glinda's best song. She has so much emotion. It's obvious to the listener that even though she's saying happy things she's absolutely devastated. She has everything she's ever wanted, but it doesn't mean anything to her if she can't have Elphaba back.

For me, if the actress doesn't tear up, she's not playing the role right. Especially at "isn't it?"

My favorite part of this song is when Glinda goes: "There are bridges you cross you didn't know you've crossed until you cross" There's just so much emotion in her voice, while she's talking to the people, she acts so happy (and I think Glinda is trying to live vicariously through the people's happiness with the celebration) and when she's alone she turns all sad and vaguely talks about her regrets. The sadness especially showed through after Figaro left Glinda

This song, if you've seen the play, shows a great example of how media can influence how others perceive some one and how as long as theres a beautiful figure telling you a much more pleasant lie, hardly annoying will look for the worse truth. Gawd I love this play. xD

i think Glinda and Elphie where never the same when they part you can hear the sadness in Glinda's voice if you listen hard enough.
i know she seems like a bit of a back stabber sometimes but i think deep down she regrets not going with Elphie

(SPOILER) I love how they take the pure water thing outta context here and have Elphie pretend that water can melt her and her and Fiyero ride off with each other forever at the end of the play. I know she actually dies in the book (I'm reading it) but love this play so much that I refuse to accept that she dies because of how much I love her character.

As a kid I never understood why everyone thought that Elphie was so evil in the Wizard of Oz. She didn’t seem that bad to me and I thought that the Wizard seemed more like the bad guy because he was deceiving the citizens of Oz with that machine and curtain (which you have to wonder why no one ever questioned why a random curtain was hanging in the middle of the room) and for not landing the balloon and waiting for Dorothy as hot air balloons aren’t that hard to land as all you need to do is turn down the flame until it starts to descend and while it’s hard to spot, you can see that the part that holds the flame is directly above the Wizard’s head.

    Rebel animals...?
But didn't they loose their speeches than?
The monkeys were surely still locked in cages in the thrown of Oz back then.
Did she rescued other animals while she was gone?
I have a feeling that's what she was doing the whole time.
Helping intelligent animals and bringing them to her secret home where she used to protect them.

I think the book does a better job at showing the Elphaba's side. If more people read the book, people wouldn't be calling the Munchkins evil and just over hating on the characters they grew up with OZ.

That's true. While I wouldn't call Elphaba a villain, she isn't exactly spotless, either.
She gets Fiyero killed, attempts to assassinate Madame Morrible, and threatens to raise an army against the wizard, plus she threatens to reinstate the office of the Eminence of Munchkinland and install herself as a dictator in Nessarose's place if they don't give her the shoes.

IDK the Munchkins were pretty fucked up. I mean they murdered Turtleheart because they were in a drought, and they go along with the Wizards restrictions on Animals and enslave them just so they have a feeling of control. They’re a pretty shitty people, and though Elphaba doesn’t succeed in her attempts she try. That’s probably why after Fiyero she just lost it.

I'm dead inside like Glinda daying inside for Elphaba because in ALL URUGUAY there is not the book of Wicked. Man *:(*

  • @socialismandrevolution8299

This song really highlights how Elphaba actually didn't do anything wrong. People talk about how bad she is, but it's really just rumors and made up shit. Glinda, on the other hand, is participating in this system of racism and discrimination out of her own free will, simply because she wanted a high social rank. It's Glinda who should apologise to Elphaba, Elphaba really doesn't have anything to apologise for. While "Wicked" is fantastic overall, this aspect really bothers me: Being part of a racist system of subjugation and fighting against it are seen as equally negative, when in fact, one is wrong and one is right. Well that part, and the fact that Elphaba ends up being with Fiyero and not with Glinda.

If melting her actually didn't work in the play, how did people who knew Elphaba from Shiz not see her drinking water or something? And wouldn't Glinda, being Elphaba's roommate, know if she bathed or took showers?
Also, if Elphaba could be melted by water, how the heck did she drink or fly through clouds or even live without melting or getting severely dehydrated?

    • @nicolersands
      @nicolersands Před 5 lety +16

Glinda knew Elphaba wasn’t actually the bad guy, and by the end (feeling guilt over the death of Nessa and Fiero, as well as realizing she cares for her fried) saves her life by warning her about the mob of people coming to murder her. Elphaba gives her the spellbook before faking her death and officially disappearing forever, and Gilda usurps power from the Wizard (blackmailing him to leave with Dorothy). The framing device for the musical is the Ozians throwing a party celebrating Elphaba’s death, and Glinda trying to make them feel Empathy for her friend without breaking her promise to Elphaba and giving away to much of her true life’s story. The song “No One Mourns the Wicked” at the beginning and end has a double meaning. All of the parts Glinda sings (“Goodness knows the wicked’s lives are lonely, goodness knows the wicked die alone, it just shows when you’re wicked you reap only what you’ve sown) about Elphaba to placate the Ozians she actually means about herself. Because she chose security and her selfish dreams over fighting for what she knew was right and protecting her closest friend, she had to spend her life hurting and ultimately losing literally everyone she cared about, and would have to keep up the lie to some degree for the rest of her life even while she was trying to fix all the problems in Oz the Wizard caused, meaning she can never truly connect with anyone ever again.

    • @crazygirls9000
      @crazygirls9000 Před 5 lety +11

they say it will melt her because of her evilness, which is supposed to be a more recent development than shiz, like, it isn't a Elphaba-only characteristic that she was born with, but anyone as evil as her would be melted by water
and i imagine they don't even think about her drinking or dehidrating because they, consciously or not, don't really think of her as a person anymore?? she's just a symbol of "wickedness" the same as Glinda is a symbol of "goodness"
If it wasn't clear enough, the ozians aren't exactly a paragon of critical thinking

Então não dá pra ser mais feliz
Não, não dá pra ser mais feliz
Mas eu vou assumir que pode sair
    Um pouco aquém do esperado
Mas não dá pra ser mais feliz
    Sempre sei como ser feliz
    Bom, nem sempre
Pra sempre feliz, é tudo o que eu quis
    Mas pode ser complicado
Tem um preço que a vida traz
Das escolhas que a gente faz
É preciso aceitar que o ficou pra trás
    Não volta mais
E se o amor não traz
Algo a mais que te satisfaz
    Mas neste dia tão lindo
    Com tudo saindo bem
    Quem pode ser mais feliz?
Eu ganhei o que eu sempre quis
O meu sonho se tornando o meu final feliz
    É, ou não é?
Todo sonho pede um final feliz
