Tip: Flower Hill Farm saves the yellow bulb bags and puts all the newly separated tubers in bags with their one tag so you don't have to worry about labeling every single tuber. Then she places the whole bag back into storage until they are ready to be planted.
Yes, I saw that!
I prefer the crate method and if you watch the entire video Laura only lost 2 tubers (not clumps) That's incredible!
I so did this for my gladiolus! The bags are great. I ran out & am excited to get more with my next tulip order!
Oh my goodness, when cheddar almost went in your dahlias, that’s awesome! I love how real your videos are. That’s life. Cats and children, noises in the neighborhood. All of these things happen. I guess that’s why your videos resonate with so many people because you’re just like one of us and we can relate.
Laura is such an "eagle-eye momma". Nothing gets by her. Glad she caught Cheddar
I know this speaks to my juvenile nature, but I can’t help but giggle to myself whenever Laura talks about her Pooh dahlias. 😆
Are you still sending some tubers out to Jenny?
Jenny will love whatever you send her, I was watching how she and Jerry have started to prep the ground ready for the Dahlias 😃
I’m sharing some with a lady who is like a mum to me (Mammy Pam) because of how mine multiplied last year.
I’m also going to leave some in the ground over winter. And Yes dividing Dahlias looks so scary and intimidating but I’m going to do it because of wanting too share with others.
I experimented with my Ranunuculus from last year and left a couple in a planter outside, and they have sprouted and have some lovely leaves on them.
I just saw Jenny's prep video today too. It would be great if Jenny and Laura did a split screen interview when Jenny receives the dahlias from Laura.
Looking forward to see which ones you send to Jenny. Would be interesting to see the different soil and climates results.
Hey Laura and Aaron…..and I can’t leave out your adorable helper in today’s video……Benjamin! What a cutie patootie! Thank you for sharing your family and everyday life with us! Like so many of your viewers, I look forward to sitting down with a cup of coffee and CZcams to see what adventure Garden Answer has in store for the day!
You are going to have a HUGE inventory of dahlia tubers this year! I can’t wait to see what you send to Miss Jenny at Creekside! I know she’s looking forward to starting her dahlia collection!
I anticipate you still having A LOT of tubers in your inventory after sharing with Jenny, family and friends.
***** I feel a GIVEAWAY coming (hint, hint)!!!!
I would be more than willing to pay for shipping (and some extra moolah) to have some of your tubers growing in my garden! In fact, I know of the perfect spot to create a new area in my garden dedicated to Laura’s Dahlia Tubers! What a fun conversation piece that could be.
What can we do to nudge you into a giveaway?
Everyone need to hit thumbs up on this comment! I agree! I would love to have anything that came from Laura! I have recently bought a couple items from Andrews! A big beautiful blue Herron! And an angel planter. They did a great job of packing and shipping! They are a highlight in my garden and they make my heart smile!
It's been ages since there's been a give away, and mail time would be nice maybe once a year in a cold, snowy month (like this fabulous storm sweeping from West to East and snowing on us on Friday).
I'm in. Never had a Dalhia zone 7b
❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️
Wow! That's a lot of tubers! I'm sure Jenny will be over the moon with excitement when you gift her some of your Gorgeous Dahlias! On a separate note, thank you for allowing Benjamin to use real tools under your supervision! You're doing a great job, Momma! 💗
OMG I love Laura to bits but- my husband and I hold our breath every time we see(often!) Benja-man with gardening sheers- headgears-ice picks- scissors ect... and especially plug-in and playing with the electricity outlets! Yep he’s under great supervision but accidents do happen that’s why they’re called accidents and that’s why we hold our breath every time we see him playing with adult tools.... yikes!
I was thinking the same thing about Jenny at Creekside! She’s got an area all ready for her ‘Laura dahlias’!
Take a shot every time Laura says "Body, neck and eye" 😂 Joking! Love you Laura!! 💚💚
Laura, at around 8:35 you cut off the rotten tuber. You can save it! Just cut it above the rot, let it heal over and it will grow just fine! It’s got a nice sprout so it clearly wants to grow! Larger tubers like that actually benefit from being cut in half. The smaller they are, the more willing to spit out feeder roots than bigger ones are. I hope you see this!!
So many dahlias. There’s gonna be a whole field of them. It’s impressive, and I’m imagining how awesome they are gonna look blooming! 💚💚💚
You should try to plant a couple in your regular flower beds.. even if it’s just 20 and leave them over winter to see if the following year you can leave them out
Great idea!
Somewhere nice and warm along the house.
That's where all my container spring bulbs are, all zipped up in a micro greenhouse. 🤞
She said in a video a while back that she’s going to do that - leave the bulbs and mulch them up and see if they survive the winter.
I live in VA and I leave mine outside every winter and they're always beautiful come next growing season. I separate them after they're done blooming and their leaves turn completely yellow. I don't know if I'm doing it the best way, but it was the way my mom and others I know do it so I've been following their lead. 🤷
Thank you Laura. Yes, as a novice, a close up look with detail is what I need to feel I know what I am "attempting" to do
Thank you for explaining in detail, while actually doing the dividing. Your studio shots made a big difference in understanding the method and what to look for. You share all of your experience with us and I so appreciate your hard work. Amazing Video!
I like these "refresher" videos at least for me, it is an excellent tutorial! In the future if I decide to grow Dahlias, I have a resource to come to to refresh my memory!! Thank you!! 🙂🌸✂️
What an exciting day! Knowing that some of these treasures are headed to Gardening with Creekside and their new bed!
Today I have discovered I need some dahlias in my life! To have some gardening projects for me to do in Feb/March would be awesome! Thank you so much for all the information! I got this !! 🙌 😊 🌺
Goooood Morning Laura -Aaron and GARDEN ANDWER FAMILY !!! 💃🌺🕺
This is the best ASMR of all time!!! Thank you, Laura. Kansas loves you!
Laura, I love watching your videos! I admired your tenacity and patience separating those tubers. 🙂
I've never planted dahlias but may try some this year, the flower variety is incredible. Your helper was very cute today.
Good luck - me also!
I just treat my couple dahlias like annuals and start over each year with a different variety. I wish I had more space to grow more and then store them. Some day!
Since you clear everything from cut garden, seems you could put the plastic hoop house over the dahlia area for protection leaving them in ground. Worth trying..
Laura, you should totally pot up your extra tubers and let your parents sell them at the garden center. That way your fans in the area can get a GA dahlia plant and the proceeds could pay off your IOU! 😂🤣😂 thanks for the great info and for always being so detailed, your videos are a constant source of inspiration. ❤️
I learned that you can take cuttings from the less viable tubers. Swan Island Dahlias did a video on it!! They get like 10 plants from each one!
My late husband grew the most beautiful dahlias, in fact bringing me big dahlia bouquets is partly how he wooed me when we started dating when he was just a young man. He cared for them similarly to you, very lovingly digging them up each fall, wrapping in newspaper and dividing in the spring. I’ve since moved from that large property and have a smaller garden now, and after watching this, I’m inspired to try growing dahlias myself this year, in his memory. Thank you Laura! 🌺🌸🌼
Great idea and a great way to honor your memories of him. 👍
Love that idea too!
There's something very special about a man who loves to grow flowers... 💐🙏
Good morning! 🌻🐝
I will be planting Dahlias for the first time this year. Since I’m in zone 8b I was planning to winter them over in the ground. But after seeing today’s video, when and how would I separate the tubers for additional plants? Love your channel and have learned so much from you. Thank you for being such a bright light in this weary world.
Good morning everyone.
as usual Laura is a great teacher.
Never can have too many flowers..... but you are getting seriously close with the extrapolated numbers of dahlia tubers! Hahaha❤️❤️🌸🌸🌸🌸
So happy to have come across this video. I just dug up my first season of tubers and am excited to know I can divide late winter!! Such an excellent video, thank you!!!
Thank you SO MUCH for the close up of your work!!
I'm a very visual person and when I've never done that before, I need to be able to see what's going on!
I can't express how much I appreciate the close up!
I had a great bean growth last year. I live in New England. I had so many I was giving them to all the neibors in gallon bags. Thank you Laura, for all you teach us!
I'm with you. Next fall I'll leave in the ground and mulch. Zone 6B I dug mine up last fall, but we had such a wet fall I had a hard time. They were a muddy mess and I tried storing in wood chips. I checked them last week and I had to toss most of them, I'm a very small scale home gardener. I don't mind buying new !
Ha I'm so glad you posted this video.... I planted a few tubers last year and oh my goodness they multiplied and then some lol. I knew I needed to divide them but I was super scared to attempt it, to the point that I walk in the shed and pretend I don't have 4 boxes full of tubers to work through haha lol. This gives me a lot more confidence to get going with the chopping lol 😆 thanks Laura xx
My goodness, what a prolific plant! No wonder Floret grows these! Tedious, yet abundant for sure. Have a Blessed Day 😊🐈
You know we’d all be happy to help take some of those dahlias off your hands 😜like a dahlia lottery.
Love the dahlias, especially Penny Lane! I would have to lift them also, zone 7B, north central Alabama. I am starting one color this year, golden with a russet edge. I don't want to go overboard...at 73 years old!
I ordered dahlias last year and then got sick and ended up in hospital so a family member planted late in summer and a few bloomed. I left them in winter and so being in 6a Canada I don’t think they’ll come back. I’m finally better and bought the tubers again. I won’t give up on this dream!!
Very exciting to see your harvest of Dalias
When I heard you mention you have gladiolus too I gasped. I bought some last year and they came up beautifully and I forgot to dig them up and try and save them. I'm a zone 6 in CT. O well just learned another lesson from you, thanks so much. And Benjamin was such a great helper as always 💕
Love ur videos 😊 absolutely look forward to watching them all the time.
Such a lot of work but the beautiful color is worth the effort. Thanks for the tips. Love watching you and your videos. I have learned so much
I think you will have more tubers than you can imagine! Your viewers would love to get some to plant in their gardens! You should do a give away contest to your viewers!😄
Thank you Laura, this is such a great video. I very much appreciate any videos on dividing Dahlias ♥️
Best close up of the process. Thank you.
Very productive day!!! And wow, what an abundance of dahlia tubers!! Lots of gorgeous-ness ahead!! 💕🌸🌼☀️
Wow so many dahlias!! I would be so overwhelmed!! Can’t wait to see them all bloom this summer!!! 🌸🌸🌸
So useful - thanks from a UK gardener!
I was watching and thinking “ Oh it’s so nice to see Chedder! OH NO BAD KITTY 🐈🐱🐈🐱🐈😆
Loved, loved, loved little Benjamin to present day Benjamin ❤️. What a great mom son combo
Stunning ❤️ loving the names . Especially Penny lane .. Adorable little helper along the way…💕😂 New to your channel hey from UK 🥰
Hi Claudia what a beautiful name! Welcome to G.A.Family💚
We've always stored our Dahlias in peat moss, but we may try vermiculite this year. We agree that the eyes are easier to identify in the spring. That is quite a haul of tubers 😀
YES - love these “teaching” videos - such a HUGE help! Thank you!! ❤️
I love it when you show pictures of the flowers like you did here. More pictures please. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Super informative video. I’m in Australia and our dahlias are in full bloom now . Ive not lifted mine for a few years so I know the clumps will be huge ! Dividing doesn’t seem so intimidating after watching your video.
Those tubers look so pretty and healthy for the most part. I’m happy for you cause I know you worked so hard storing them.❤️
I am having to divide mine first time so loved all the examples. I feel so much better doing this now.
Good morning, gardeners . Laura, I'm just curious...which type of Dahlias will be going to Jenny? How exciting for you both, one that never grew them before and one that gets to see the excitement of watching a dear friend experience the same joy of watching them grow. Your videos are very informative and fun to watch. I think I can speak for a lot of us. Your videos have been a "total game changer" for me in my 8b garden. I take what you do in your zone and make it work for me here. Thank you
Good morning, I can't wait for dahlias season!!!
I have so much admiration for you! Thanks for all of these wonderful videos.
Wow that’s a labor of love , you are so good at dividing them .thank you for the tutorial and I love watching cheddar as well .🌻🌸🪴
Great video Laura! Such a lot of work but so worth it! Nice to see Benjamin helping out too.
2 years ago I successfully saved my dahlia's using the lazy gardener method. I planted them in a light weight pot in spring and in the Fall brought the entire pot in the garage for the winter. I was so pleased and happy to see them bloom a second season in the same pot and the same soil. I repeated this method for the second winter and hope to have the same results...it was so worth it.
I think using the extra tubers in some areas in your town would look amazing
I can't wait to see what tubers you send Jenny! So excited to see how they grow out here in NC. I'm definitely putting some in my garden this year.
I ordered some dahlia tubers for a birthday present for a gardener who I know will love them. They will get them around the first of April. Have a blessed day and week Ms Laura and family.
I watched your video last year on how to store dahlias, can’t wait to see how it did! My grandkids got me a stunning variety with flowers the size of dinner plates, I’m praying they did ok in the paper bags I stored them in.
Seeing all these pretties make me so excited for Spring!
I live in Western Kentucky, zone 6b, and in my years of watching my mom grow dahlias, she would always try to winter hers over in the ground and they just never made it back up the next year. That poor lady put all the leaves and mulch she could but still had no luck. She was intimidated by the storing process so she always ended up planting new ones the next season. I just don’t want you to lose some of your favorites if you decide to leave them in the ground. Best of luck this year!
Is it weird that I could watch a video like this for hours? 😅 very satisfying
I'm so excited, I ordered my tubers and they should be here in April! I have several varieties coming and can't wait to see all the gorgeous blooms. My plan is to put these in a memorial garden and I wanted to plant these around a Fire Light hydrangea standard. I'm in North West Iowa in zone 5b. Would these be okay to plant together? My soil consists of Loess Hills silt, what would you amend this soil with? I believe my soil is more alkaline as all of my blue hydrangeas turned pink without adding anything to my soil. Thank you for sharing all of your amazing knowledge, it truly helps us all!
Going to start my dividing tomorrow. Thank you for explaining this better. You’re the absolute best!
Excellent video Laura 🌸🦋🌸
I still always think about Dexter when I watch your videos.. He is missed ❤️❤️❤️
We’re in a slightly warmer zone but have the same red clay soil as Jenny. I bought a couple of dahlia tubers to try this year in pots and will see how it goes for her before planting in the landscape next year. Between the two of you, I’m learning a lot. Just as important, it gives me more confidence to try new things as a beginner. Thanks for all you do! My flowerbeds (and husband) thank you too! He actually enjoyed the massive bubblegums filling the flowerbed last year instead of the usual weeds.
What an awesome video! I have enjoyed your antiquing videos and now your horticulture vids, you are just awesome!! What you do.......my GOALS! LOL You're wonderful to watch and I'm loving your content!!
This was so helpful, Thank you! And your place is so nice. Really clean and pretty. Thank you
That opening view of your greenhouse is perfection! 😍😍 This is super motivating for me. I started building one of those Palram greenhouses and had cement poured and everything. I wanted to chronicle the project on my fledgling youtube channel, but I feel like paralysis through analysis has kept me from finishing the project 🤦🏽♀️ Have you ever overthought a project and, if so, what got you back on track? For me, it’s watching your videos! Whips me right back in shape.
With greenhouses they say you can never go to big. Get the biggest your space and budget can hold. Like gardens, you will fill them!
@@amysgardenstead2879 yes I think that’s true! I was going to get a 6x8 but decided to spring for a larger one!
Great video today Laura. And great helpful advice and tips on how to divide your dahlias. But you always give great advice. I see you littie man was helping today so cute.
So many tubers! It might be fun to do a Tuber Giveaway to your viewers.
Today I was looking at the bags of bulbs and saw a beautiful Star Elite Daliah. And you know I was feeling for the three parts of the anatomy like Laura taught me. Body? Check. Damage-free neck? Check. Eye or growth point? Check. In the buggy it goes. Thanks Laura.
I bought a couple of tubers to try this season to try
Good morning Laura!! Have a wonderful Day
Super helpful. Will be growing dahlias for the first time this year so this was a great lesson in tuber anatomy and good storage practices. 😀
That was fantastic to watch. Thankyou
I am a new beginner gardener, may I add that you were the one who inspired me to do so back in the spring of 2020. Thank you Laura! I owe so much to you, I find this new journey so peaceful and stress reliving. My question to you is, can I save store bought dahlia bulbs after they are done blooming and grow them again in the next season? This is my first time trying to grow dahlias from a bulb, last season I bought some already grown at a local store and they died from what I believe to be mildew. Thanks!
You absolutely can!!! I think I’m gonna go down and pull mine and see how they did over the winter!
me as well, i have always admired others gardens now they admire mine. Thanks Laura!
So cool to know! I’ve not grown them either and that’s really cool News ... WOW
Even dahlias that you've grown from seed will form small tubers at the end of the growing season. You can save those tubers and store them over winter (in the same way you would store the dahlias grown from tubers).
@@greenthumbelina7331 interesting. Love your name Thumbelina! My husband has a shop cat named Thumbelina.. because he has 6 toes - but they now call him Thumbs because yes he found out she is a HE...! Hahahahaha
Just bought a small bag of dahlias at Walmart to plant this spring. Hope they will come up for me. Thanks for this video for future division.
wow, so many gorgeous flowers coming from a silly looking clump.. nature never ceases to amaze, lol... ok, you've talked me into it: i will be on the lookout for some dahlias around here and try them in my cottage garden... i've always shied away from them... but gosh, they are so gorgeous... love seeing Ben-Ja-Man helping you out.. and Cheddar? well, being a cat, lol... glad you caught him before and not after!! great instructions, too... your ability to explain and describe and show us what is what is so very clear and perfect... thanks for that!! hope you have a great day, too! 🙂 ❤ thanks for the video!! 🙂 ❤
Cheddar just wanted to help, and it was so kind of you to provide bathroom accomodations for him, lol. Can't wait to see all those tubers grow!
Amazingly informative video that truly demystifies the whole process of dahlias growing. Thank you! My dahlias are in the ground already (zone 11). I replanted after I pulled them up and divided them. Can’t wait to see the results! It’s been a fun experiment.
Love to see how Benjamin is now getting involved with your gardening
Just seeing all the color and trays behind you is such a great reminder that we’re almost done with our winter. Can you clarify if tubers need to go their sides or just as long as eye is up. My recent purchases have said on side. Which is new to me. Also can you divide your new store bought tubers if there are multiple eyes. Thanks for all the positive energy and encouragement .
Hello 👋
They get planted vertical and in tomorrow’s video she planted a few on their sides to see if they will sprout. If they do she’ll then take them and plant in pots in vertical position.
Thank you for the refresher Laura. I love making my first cup of coffee and watching your videos. I saw on the Creekside videos where they got a bed ready just waiting for some of your tubers. Just curious because they are in a warmer zone when you will ship the tubers to them? Thank you for introducing us to their website. I enjoy watching your videos first then theirs.
Holy cow! 18 crates. You have infinite patience! I grew dahlias a few years ago but stopped. Not sure why as they have the best blooms. I have slug issues in my garden and I used to put copper rings around the base of the plants to keep them away. It works. Anyway your video has encouraged me to plant them again. Thanks. 🌺
*WOOOOO!!! WHEN GARDENING IS IN THE BLOOD, NO NEED TO FORCE, JUST PUSH, that's a real gardener, continue like this*
I’ll be the first in line to buy some of those “extra” tubers! 😄🙋♀️
This is so exciting! I potted up some dahlias at the weekend and have 6 new varieties arriving in March. Xxx
Wondering if you sent Creekside some of your dahlias. Anxious to see them under the completely different zone! It was so nice of you to share your dahlia harvest with them,
Thank you Laura!
I live in zone 6b in SW Missouri. I left 10 Dahlias in the ground this winter. I covered them with about a foot and a half of straw. We have had a typical 6b winter. I expect my dahlias to be just fine. I have used this method before with success.
Plastic wrapped worked perfectly for my first year storing dahlias over winter. I put the wrapped tubers in a cardboard box in a temp controlled wine fridge. I had zero loss. This year I will have way too many tubers to individually wrap so I’ll prob try your vermiculite method. Thanks for the demo and all your videos!
Don’t get to overwhelmed send me some to get them off your hands 🥰
