✅Ingredients
• 2 tablespoons olive oil
• 6 medium yellow onions, sliced
• 2 tablespoons butter
• 1 tablespoon minced garlic
• 8 cups beef broth
• ¼ cup dry sherry (optional)
• 1 teaspoon dried thyme
• 1 teaspoon salt, or to taste
• ½ teaspoon black pepper, or to taste
Soup Toppings:
• 8 slices french bread baguette
• 2 tablespoons olive oil
• 4 slices gruyere or provolone cheese
• 2 tablespoons grated parmesan cheese
✅Instructions
1️⃣ Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium high heat. Add in onions and saute until tender, about 5 to 7 minutes. Reduce heat to medium low and continue to cook onions until caramelized and golden, about 15 to 20 minutes, stirring every 3 to 5 minutes.
2️⃣ Add in butter and garlic. Let cook until butter melts and garlic is fragrant, about 2 minutes.
3️⃣ Pour in beef broth and sherry (if using). Season with thyme, salt, and black pepper. Add more seasoning to taste. Bring to a simmer and continue to simmer over medium-low heat for 20-30 minutes.
4️⃣ While the soup is simmering, brush each slice of baguette with olive oil on both sides. Place on a baking sheet and toast in the oven underneath the broil setting until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes. Flip and toast the other sides.
5️⃣ Place 4 oven safe bowls onto a baking sheet. Ladle soup into bowls. Place two slices of toasted baguette on each one. Top with a slice of grueyere cheese and finish with 1/2 tablespoon of parmesan cheese on each bowl.
6️⃣ Slide baking sheet carefully into the oven underneath the broil setting until cheese is bubbling and starting to brown, about 2-3 minutes. Watch closely as broil times may vary. Serve immediately.

You bet!
Hi. First of all, love your show/videos. Learning to cook at home from scratch has been a Godsend during this pandemic. I watched your “Tell All” video from a couple years back and in it you mention a recipe book club. Is the book club still going strong and if so, how can I join? If not, how can I get my hands on your latest recipe book? Also, if you haven’t already, can you do a video on gumbo? Thanks.
I love your recipes. Can you suggest a good olive oil brand ?? I never know what to buy. Thanx so much.
😍
Looks great! What kind of beef broth did you use? I am not sure what brands are considered high quality beef broth. Thanks!
We used to order this when we went to fancy restaurants with my Mom when we were kids. The gooey cheese and crispy bread was so good. It brings back such fond memories. I lost my Mom to an aggressive cancer 10 years ago but I am going to make this and reminisce. Thank you for this! 🥰
Food tastes even better when it's associated with special memories. I hope you enjoy and that it brings back all the good memories of your mom!

Good morning
💖👍❤💞💕💞💖👌🤝💕
Very nice rach missed seeing you but I’m back
💖👼🏻🌺
What could you use instead of beef broth if can't have it.
Maybe chicken broth?
It depends on why you can't have beef broth. You could use chicken broth, vegetable broth, or mushroom broth, it'd just be a different flavor.
Where do u post ur recipes?
Never mind... just found it! Sorry!
What? No sherry? No brown sugar? No Worstershire? How about a dab of cayenne? But you are still killing it!
Sherry is the 6th ingredient. brown sugar, Worcestershire , and cayenne are not traditional ingredients in French Onion Soup, but I'm sure they'd be a delicious variation!
@@Thestayathomechef I was being totally facetious. However I used to hang out in may marvellous French provinces for decades where every chef took pride in adding a bit of spice here and there. Just how many different kinds of Gruyere can you name? I did not even get to the beast-bodied red wines from those regions. OMG. Now I bet you want to post a second video, and with my blessings. Loved the first one.
So I signed up for your notifications on my phone a while back, and today my phone was in pocket and i was talking to my family. We were talking about how great your pot roast was and I said the name of the recipe and your site, When we stop talking I open my phone and I get a notification from your website, guess what recipe your SUNDAY POT ROAST😱 I was sooo creeped out, either google was listening or the universe wants me to make it again🤷♂️
Don’t worry, we send those out manually ourselves to hundreds of thousands of people. I pick which recipes goes out which day about a month in advance. It’s pure coincidence, but a happy one!
I’ve never added garlic nor thyme into my oignon soup!
It's delicious!
I use 3/4 beef 1/4 chicken broth

Her stupid looking face she makes in the thumbnail glitches YT.
@taksutak As always, feel free to put your own stupid looking face on your own video!
@@Thestayathomechef so you agree that your face looks stupid. Glad we’re finally on the same page!
Or I'm a grown ass woman who doesn't really care what strangers think. If you want to think my face looks stupid, then think that. It doesn't make a difference to me. But I'd be willing to bet that you'd live a much more satisfying life if you dropped the asshole part of your personality.
Wow, what an asshole!

Parmesan? NO
Stay calm. It's a make it yourself situation. You can leave the parmesan off of yours.
This is a perfect winter treat ❤️ thank you for sharing
