@Hugo im pretty sure you would act worse. If you think you're one of the strongest creatures in the whole wide world and you fought someone who could stop you with a fingernail. I'm actually surprised he recovered from the mental distress. Keep pretending that you won't breakdown mentally and you'll be one of those "tough" people that cries when terrorists claim their city.
I'm a little sad that they left out so many details in this scene compared to the novel. In the novel, there's heavy build up on how brain has been training and devoting his life to beating gazed after being beaten in a tournament. He made it his life goal to develop these set of techniques to beat gazef. It makes it seem like he's got some real power up his sleeve only for Shalltear to show him up with worlds of magnitude in power difference. And the hopelessness he feels is so awful in the novels. Nonetheless, it's a cool scene. You can only do so much compressing 3 novels into 12 episodes
Yup. They can make 1 season 24 ep maybe if they add all stuff or it might be more. Also if I remember correctly he drinks some portions(agility boost?) it has been long time cause I remember reading it just after I watched overlord about 3years ago. Or the fact one of her vampire bride got stuck in a trap.
I just read that part! Had to watch this to compare. The build up to the shattering of his confidence then to him running away was so gooood in the book
From what I've seen, it's about 3 NW levels to 1 YGGDRASIL level. Mainly because Entoma was ballparked to be 150 for new world while her actual level is like 51

She's only -350 on the karma scale. There's a chance she'll just let you go, as she did with the bandit rape slaves and Brain the second time she met him
I adore this scene in the novel. You spend 2 pages hearing brains internal dialog about how powerful his move is and how arrogant shalltear is. "Move so fast there isn't even blood on the blade." "Those who have seen it believed he was faster than lightning" (About his jumping attack after his first one failed) "Strong enough to cut a heavily armored soldier in half from head to toe" And then it all is revealed "Shalltear had caught it- his strike that was faster than a bolt of lightning. As gently as if she were pinching the wing of a butterfly"
At least he earned some major respect from Cocytus who even went out of his way not to walk over Brain's corpse or directly cross the path Brain died protecting.
I love how after their fight the rest of his screentime is just him being depressed and bombing out the facts that humans are weak, yet gets a character development because of Sebas, not knowing he is a comrade of Shalltear. I love the twists
See now, when the monster your fighting can block your sword swings with its fingers, it' best not to run away, if it were me, i'd strike up a friendly conversation =D
He expelled a short, forceful breath. His blade cleared his sheath, slicing through the air at Shalltear. There was a single word to describe the speed of this movement - lightning. By the time the light entered the recipient's eyes, their head would have fallen, so quickly did it take place. After practicing millions of times, it was truly a divine flash. I win. As Brain thought that- -He stared in shock. If the blow had missed, if the strike into which he had poured his entire being had been evaded, he might have been able to admit that he had met an unimaginably powerful opponent. However- Shalltear had caught it with her fingertips. She had caught Brain’s lightning-fast strike. In addition, she held his blade gently, like one would the wings of a butterfly. Brain could not help but pant heavily, as he felt the air seem to freeze around him. “...Im-Impossible...” Those nearly-inaudible words accompanied each gasp he made. Brain struggled desperately to rein in the tremors within him, as the scene before his eyes utterly defied his expectations. However, it was an undeniable fact that there were two of Shalltear’s ivory fingers upon the body of his blade - her thumb and her forefinger. More than that, she had not seized his blade from the front, but hooked her arm around the swing to catch it from behind. Without once entering the path of the strike, she had caught up with the speed of the katana - with the speed of his [God Flash]. Although she appeared to be gingerly grasping the blade, with hardly any effort at all, Brain could not budge his sword backward or forward, despite pouring the full strength of his body into his exertions. It was like yanking on a chain fastened to a stone several hundred times his own body weight. [...] _-Should I run?_ Brain had always felt that living was the most important thing. If he was outmatched, he should run, and erase his shame at a later date. Brain felt that as long as he survived, he could claim the victory in the end, because he was sure he could get stronger in the meantime. However, how could he flee someone whose physical abilities overwhelmed his own by such a large margin? As though freshly awakened, Brain reconfirmed the location he was targeting. He was aiming for her legs, to reduce his opponent’s mobility before escaping at top speed. He would avoid the radius in which his foe had seized the strike made with all his might, and instead attack something which was harder to defend. With that in mind, Brain turned his attention to Shalltear’s neck as he resheathed his katana. When [Field] activated, he could strike accurately even with his eyes closed, so it made sense to deceive his opponent with his eyes. “-Then I shall proceed to trample you.” Shalltear stepped forward once more in an exaggerated fashion. Although before he had eagerly waited for her to step into his [Field], it was the opposite now - he didn't want her anywhere near him. [...] Three steps, two steps, one step- -She was in range. As Brain stared at Shalltear’s neck, he noticed her mocking expression out of the corner of his eye. -His target was the right ankle she was putting forward. He swung down with his katana, using his body weight to further hasten his blow. As he cast his stress aside, he was certain that this swing was faster than the previous one. If it were him on the receiving end, he would have had no way of defending against a strike of that speed. _I can do it!_ Just as he was about to slice off the girl’s delicate ankle that revealed itself from beneath the hem of her skirt- -The hilt of Brain’s katana slid from his hands. Brain’s line of sight did not move, and he had no idea what had happened. However, the special sensory abilities granted to him by [Field] made him acutely aware that his beloved katana was now on the ground, trod under a high-heeled foot. It was impossible. Yet, it was an undeniable reality. The reason Brain’s katana had slipped was because of the shock transmitted into his hands when that high-heeled shoe had stepped on it. [...] That reason was: despite heightening his focus to its limit, he still had not sensed his opponent’s movements. Yes, not even within the [Field] of which he was so proud. She was close enough that if she reached her hand out, she could touch him. Shalltear’s disdainful gaze landed on Brain from such a short distance. The startling pressure it generated threatened to crush the air along with Brain himself. Brain’s breathing grew chaotic. His sweat flowed like rain, soaking his entire body. His field of vision trembled and an intense feeling of nausea came over him. He had been through several risky encounters before, so desperate situations were a common sight for him. However, those encounters were little more than child’s play compared to his present predicament. The high-heeled shoe pulled off the blade, and Shalltear silently leapt away. “-Are you done preparing yet?” “!” The third repetition of those words filled Brain with an incomparable sense of despair. Next, she would say “Let the trampling begin.” However, just as Brain thought that would happen, he heard something completely different. “Could it be that… you can’t use martial arts?” That voice - filled with pity and surprise - made Brain draw a sudden breath. He could give no reply. No, to be precise, he did not know what to say. Perhaps he could playfully reply like a clown: “Ah, I used them just now, but you defeated them easily.” Biting his lower lip, Brain retrieved his katana. “...Could it be that you’re not actually that strong? I thought you were stronger than those chaps at the entrance… Sorry about that, I measure strength in meters, so I can’t discern differences of a millimeter or two.” He had worked so hard and so long. During the showdown with Gazef, he was overly confident in his natural abilities, so he had not trained and lost to someone who had. As a result, his defeat had turned into his motivation. The mindset he had developed, of standing up again from defeat - of earnestly honing his skills to produce results - were nothing but foolishness to the monster before him. _This can’t be happening. All along, I’ve been slaying those monsters who scorned me and mocked me for being weaker than them-_ As those thoughts rose through Brain’s mind, he struggled to press them down, and in their place- “Aaaaahhhhh-!” With a great shout, he made his move on Shalltear. Brain swung at Shalltear - who had a puzzled look on her face as she watched him attack - with all the force his body could muster. His blow, which marshalled all the muscles of his entire body, could easily cut an armored human being in half. Shalltear had no intention of evading that stunning strike. The way she watched the gleaming arc of white light descending upon her made Brain think that he might be able to land a hit. However, the scene from earlier denied those thoughts of his. Could he really strike her so easily? In the next moment, those fears were confirmed. As a crisp ringing filled the air, Brain once more saw an unbelievable sight. Shalltear had swiftly flicked the nail of her left little finger - roughly two centimeters long - with blinding speed. In addition, Shalltear did not seem to be using any strength at all; the rest of her hand was balled up into a fist, leaving only the little finger sticking out, gently bent at an angle. With that playful motion, she had parried that blow which Brain had struck with all his might. Parried that blow which could cleave full plate armor, shatter swords, and break shields- Struggling desperately to pull together his shattered will to fight, he focused his strength into his hands which trembled from the impact of Shalltear’s parry. He raised his katana high and brought it down, and then - Shalltear still casually deflected it. “Huaaaah~” Shalltear yawned in an exaggerated manner, even going so far as to pat her mouth with her right hand. She was intentionally staring at the ceiling now. It was clear that she no longer recognized Brain as an opponent. Even so. Even so - Brain’s katana had still been deflected. By the little finger of her left hand. A roar surged from Brain’s throat. No, it was not a roar, but a cry of despair. Horizontal slash - parried. Diagonal slash - parried. Frontal slash - parried. Diagonal cut - parried. Vertical cut - parried Horizontal cut - parried. No matter the angle, no matter the direction in which he made his attacks, all of them were deflected. It felt as though his katana was being drawn to that nail, and in that moment Brain finally understood in the depths of his soul. His opponent was truly powerful. Even his hard work and natural talents could not even bring him close to her feet, let alone onto her level. "Ara~ tired already? Though come to think of it, this nail clipper's pretty dull." Brain stopped swinging as he heard those surprising words. One could not cut through a mountain with a sword. Any child would know such a thing is impossible. Then, could he beat Shalltear? Any warrior who faced her would know that answer. Absolutely impossible.

have you guys ever noticed that Shaltear didn't just stop his ultimate technique, she grabbed it from the back end of the blade? which is physically impossible on 2 levels. that sheer amount of speed and power brain put into was grabbed from behind, rather than grabbing it from the front, which makes more sense to stop the blade. which shames brain even further. 1:24, look how she grabbed it. her hand behind the blade and grabbed from that end. 1:34 shows it more clearly.
Anyone else really fascinated by the concept that these NPC’s created in a game by players are being experienced and interacted with by real people in this real world? And that these personality traits designed by players are a driving force for how the Guardians interact in the new world and it forges new enemies and lovers (looks at Sebas) out of these real people? Anyone get what I’m saying? It’s just so cool to think about.
My dude Brain busting out his secret technique he honed to perfection for years and Shalltear be like "oh I'm sorry, I can only see a difference in meters I can't recognize a change in millimeters" must have been really devastating, poor Brain
Usually when someone blocks a sword attack they do it from the front side, but look at her she caught his sword from behind. That said she probably wouldnt even get hurt if she let him hit her neck.
@@hasturthekinginyellow5003 It seems she really thought a martial art is about to be employed. Little did she know that the boring strike she completely squashed was Brains ultimate technique. I actually felt sorry for him. Shalltear wasnt even aware of how much she belittled his efforts.
I doubt any of his attacks would have worked. Shalltears abilities are so far above his that his speed was too slow for her not to match. Even though she is an npc from another game her stats were so high that none of the new npcs from the new world have a chance.
after first watching the anime, then reading the light novel and then seeing this clip again.. i must say the absolute absurdity of this scene is MUCH more terrifying in the novel
Always felt sorry for Brain from the moment he debuted; it was clear even just from this scene in the show how much effort he’d put into his technique. I was never the best at my martial arts school or really in anything I’ve tried in my life; really relatable to see someone trying their best and failing regardless.
I think this was the moment that REALLY sold me on this show, when it showed the overconfident Brain becoming broken as a person after encountering true power. For real, I feel considerably worse about the way some of these people are having their souls crushed than their bodies. Yet, still somehow I end up rooting for Ainz and Co. in the end, hoping he isn't ousted as incompetent to his subordinates, and that the guardians each go on to enjoy their lives.
Can we talk about how nice sheltear is being here? Like she only blocked his attacks and said he would be useful to ains and even apologized for not being able to notice his ability. We love a respectful queen 💗
When bae questions your size Shalltear: But I can only notice a change in strength by meters Brain: *sweats* Shalltear: I can't tell the difference between one or two millimeters *smile sweetly* Brain: *brain has stopped working*
Best part is his depression was ended when he worked with and was inspired by Sebas, little did he know, if he told Sebas about Shalltear he would have told him that he was nothing compared to her. Fast forward to if he told Lord Eins about Shalltear in season 3 and Eins woulda said "Oh her? She's my subordinate!" just to give him an idea on how minuscule he is to everyone in Nazarick.
From Shalltear's POV, it's understandable that she didn't think Brain used martial art when he used the draw technique but thought that he used some sort of martial art when he was wildly swinging his sword -- for the former, Brain wasn't tired, but after the wild swings, Brain was tired.
This is probably the way Lee Sedol, the worlds best go player, felt after getting beat by Alpha Go. He actually decided to retire afterwards. I hope he didn’t get as distraught as Brain got after being humiliated by Shalltear, but I have a feeling he felt some kind of despair knowing no matter how hard he trained from that point on he would no longer be the strongest entity in Go. But yea Shalltear would be like an AI with super intelligence to a man who spent a lifetime pursuing genius.
Seeing this and their reunion later on really makes me wanna see Brain get strong enough to rival Shalltear one day. I can't help but root for the guy.
I know. Still a man can dream. Though the most likely scenario would be Brain eventually losing his mind and end up serving Shalltear as her nail clipper.

She could’ve blocked his sword the way that Kakarot did with Future Trunks, but she didn’t. She intentionally blocked the blade from behind to show the gap in their strength and speed. First, the speed gap he was unable to make contact before she blocked the attack. And second, she’s so strong that she blocked the blade from behind and stopped it’s motion dead in its tracks. She completely crushed his spirit to the point his mind is almost permanently scarred. That’s how strong Lady Shalltear is.

@MTD Viet Not to mention at this point in the story he's hanging out with a bunch of ex-mercenaries that rob and rape rich women. Keep in mind that the whole reason Shalltear went to this hide-out in the first place was because of that group of bandits that attacked them in the carriage earlier on. Honestly a lot of characters in the story are shady as hell. 😒
@@1987jjl i dont believe he ever indulded in the activity they did tho, i think it was mentioned how he just never had a girlfriend or something about being gay
Imagine putting Shalltear and Rory Mercury in a room together. They would probably either try to kill each other or lez out.
Definitely lez out.
they would kill each other. Shalltear has a fetish for the rotting dead.
johndgibson0089 If you read the web novel, you'd understand.
Lez out.
They would discuss how flat is justice?
Cinereo moka with rosari off vs shalltear.. omg.
Basically, Naruto flashback? I dont think that'd fit in 1 episode...
@@lucifate4252 Or the fact that he tried to attacks her 3 times, they skipped how shalltear managed to block his quick attack by simply stepping on it
I just read that part! Had to watch this to compare. The build up to the shattering of his confidence then to him running away was so gooood in the book
Perhaps, that's the point. No matter how much they train, the limitation is at the fundamental level which is to say, being human.
Literally a raidboss.
Three raid bosses actually. Of all the NPCs, Shalltear has to protect three floors of the guild hall. Min they're the first three floors.
they are only "raid bosses" when in the castle due to buffs. otherwise their lv80-100 npcs. and this guy is like level 15.
Actually, he's not even as strong as a YGGDRASIL level 15.
Tetra Digm no brain is level 30
From what I've seen, it's about 3 NW levels to 1 YGGDRASIL level. Mainly because Entoma was ballparked to be 150 for new world while her actual level is like 51
She basically told him "if you were a thousand times stronger than you are now this would be mildly entertaining"
Damn dude you blew my mind just now xD I still think it's hilarious tho lol
I was expecting her to actually fall asleep and still block his attacks completely op like
@@sibbywoo or catch his sword in between her index and middle finger then snap the blade in two from crossing her fingers
More like "I would notice the difference". To be entertaining he needs to be like 10k times stronger(not surprising considering she's town/city block level or something like this)
@@jimmcneal5292no, Brain himself is already Small Town Level+ and is very close to reaching town level even without martial arts.
Shalltear is pretty solidly Mountain Level/triple digit megaton range considering cure Elim’s shenanigans.

Why does it never get old when humans say this in Overlord??
Because there are too many tropes about "heroes of light" somehow defeating clearly superior life forms.
"You may think you've got me all figured out. But there's one thing you didn't account for. My numbers... are bigger than yours!"
"Funny thing, really... you get to a high enough level, and you're basically untouchable. My wounds heal faster than you can make them!"

I adore this scene in the novel.
You spend 2 pages hearing brains internal dialog about how powerful his move is and how arrogant shalltear is.
"Move so fast there isn't even blood on the blade."
"Those who have seen it believed he was faster than lightning"
(About his jumping attack after his first one failed)
"Strong enough to cut a heavily armored soldier in half from head to toe"
And then it all is revealed
"Shalltear had caught it- his strike that was faster than a bolt of lightning.
As gently as if she were pinching the wing of a butterfly"
lvl 100 warlock vs lvl 5 hunter
Shalltear is lvl 100 (Magic) Knight/Valkyrie

at least he managed to surpass stronov, respect.

So mission accomplished :D
nah dude he ain't coming back. He's dead
I win.
As Brain thought that-
-He stared in shock.
If the blow had missed, if the strike into which he had poured his entire being had been evaded, he might have been able to admit that he had met an unimaginably powerful opponent.
However-
Shalltear had caught it with her fingertips.
She had caught Brain’s lightning-fast strike.
In addition, she held his blade gently, like one would the wings of a butterfly.
Brain could not help but pant heavily, as he felt the air seem to freeze around him.
“...Im-Impossible...”
Those nearly-inaudible words accompanied each gasp he made.
[...]
_-Should I run?_
Brain had always felt that living was the most important thing.
“-Then I shall proceed to trample you.”
Shalltear stepped forward once more in an exaggerated fashion.
Although before he had eagerly waited for her to step into his [Field], it was the opposite now - he didn't want her anywhere near him.
[...]
Three steps, two steps, one step-
-She was in range.
_I can do it!_
Just as he was about to slice off the girl’s delicate ankle that revealed itself from beneath the hem of her skirt-
-The hilt of Brain’s katana slid from his hands.
[...]
That reason was: despite heightening his focus to its limit, he still had not sensed his opponent’s movements.
“-Are you done preparing yet?”
“!”
The third repetition of those words filled Brain with an incomparable sense of despair.
Next, she would say “Let the trampling begin.” However, just as Brain thought that would happen, he heard something completely different.
“Could it be that… you can’t use martial arts?”
That voice - filled with pity and surprise - made Brain draw a sudden breath.
He could give no reply. No, to be precise, he did not know what to say. Perhaps he could playfully reply like a clown: “Ah, I used them just now, but you defeated them easily.”
Biting his lower lip, Brain retrieved his katana.
“...Could it be that you’re not actually that strong? I thought you were stronger than those chaps at the entrance… Sorry about that, I measure strength in meters, so I can’t discern differences of a millimeter or two.”
He had worked so hard and so long.
All along, I’ve been slaying those monsters who scorned me and mocked me for being weaker than them-_
As those thoughts rose through Brain’s mind, he struggled to press them down, and in their place-
“Aaaaahhhhh-!”
With a great shout, he made his move on Shalltear.
Parried that blow which could cleave full plate armor, shatter swords, and break shields-
Struggling desperately to pull together his shattered will to fight, he focused his strength into his hands which trembled from the impact of Shalltear’s parry. He raised his katana high and brought it down, and then - Shalltear still casually deflected it.
“Huaaaah~”
Shalltear yawned in an exaggerated manner, even going so far as to pat her mouth with her right hand.
Vertical cut - parried
Horizontal cut - parried.
Though come to think of it, this nail clipper's pretty dull."
Brain stopped swinging as he heard those surprising words.

And that these personality traits designed by players are a driving force for how the Guardians interact in the new world and it forges new enemies and lovers (looks at Sebas) out of these real people? i must say the absolute absurdity of this scene is MUCH more terrifying in the novel

Nah, sebas has a chance against shalltear in his Dragonoid form, it is clearly stated in LN.
What if Brain met Touch Me? Touch Me could have probably tanked his strike.
Just a though of mine, Shalltear's true appearance is much like the local vampire we call here in the Philippines as " Aswang ".
I don't know where you're from, but if there's truly a myth about a vampire called Aswang there, I want to visit just once.
shaltear is a pinoy ? overlord ainz use foreign talent worker imported from filipino ?

Ryuujiish just say you know ainz ool gown, they'll let you go
Mumen Rider i appreciate the rumor, but on a serious note.
Dont even think of meeting one, i live in ph.

Brain is considered at the peak of human ability. He developed those techniques to defeat the one man who has ever bested him. But then Shalltear played with him with 0 effort. Which means all Brain's training and struggles mean nothing and are worthless because he just learned how low on the scale he is. She basically broke him.
