What makes the Van Halen solo in Beat It so great to me is that Eddie was asked to do a feature, and he was sort of reluctant at first cause it was a pop song and he wasn't really that into MJ and didn't really know a lot about him. He went on to do it in a short session, thinking no one's going to hear it anyway. Little did he know.
That, coupled with the absolutely raw sound of it, the incredible close feel and how it just fits perfectly in the song makes it great. It might not be the most intricate or impressive solo, but the sense of melody, pacing, and phrasing he translates through it is astonishing. Seriously, it even sounds great isolated, which is really hard for a solo to do.
