Heaven cant get much closer then this !

No specific plan to record with this particular lineup, but you can check out my stuff at www.danphelps.com
Hellz yes. Needs more fuzz though!
Those are some wild pickups

Magnifique!!!
can we get a tour of your home studio set up?
You seem to have a very interesting and eclectic studio and gear/instrument collection!
I'll definitely consider it.
Cool! Big fan of your stuff. And home studio gear intrigues me. More idiosyncratic than a regular old studio :P
Hi Dan, awesome stuff like always. I wish this kind of music were more popular in Spain.
Can I ask for your recommendation about home recording studio essential gear? I need some guidance, and I really admire your taste and attention to details. I noticed you're using Apogee Duet 2.
Thanks man. Much appreciated. I'd love to visit Spain.
Feel free to ask any questions. The answers depend a lot on what you are trying to record...just guitar tracks? Do you need to be able to record a drum kit?
You’re welcome to come to Spain anytime.
I’m looking for some equipment to start recording my own compositions and produce them myself, with the best possible quality. My future goal is to set up a studio (If it’s similar to yours, that’d be amazing), and produce some records maybe, so I want to invest in equipment that I could keep, although my priority now are guitar and vocals mostly. One step a time.
My gear it’s pretty basic I must say. Right now I’m kind of a roaming musician, so portability It’s appreciated, that’s why I was interested in the Duet. I also recently purchased a Shure SM7B.
Thanks for taking the time to respond.
Hey A.
The SM7B is a great mic that will work well on a variety of sources. If you picked up a large diaphragm tube mic (like the Mojave ma-200) had a 2 channel interface with good preamps (like the Duet or the UA Apollo Twin) you could cover a lot of ground there. Those two mics would give you darker/brighter options on any source like vocals, acoustic guitar...
On electric guitar you could use the SM7 up on the speaker and the tube mic as a room mic for some ambience.
On drums you could use the tube mic as a mono overhead and the SM7 on the kick.
Plenty of options, very portable.
Beyond that, you could invest a little more now and get an interface with 8 channels of preamps and conversion that would still be very portable, and then as you add mics to your collection you are able to record more things at once.
Next steps with microphones would be to have a stereo pair of something so that you can record things like piano or room ambience in stereo. Shinybox and Cascade make excellent and affordable ribbon mics that would be good for this.
A set of good heaphones or speakers for monitoring will make life happier and easier. I like the Beyer Dynamic DT770 as all around good sounding and comfortable headphones, but there's lots of other opinions on this topic.
Lastly, don't forget that the recording will never be better than the source...be concerned more with how your voice, guitar, amp, etc sound than wether you have the best mic to record it with. I hope this helps! Hit me with any other questions you have.
Hey Dan,
Thanks for all the info and suggestions. It’s very nice of you and it really helps. My name is Alex by the way.
I’m certainly aware of the last issue you mention, and I’m trying to address that too. I’m always looking further, aiming to learn something new, and evolve as a musician too.
It’s always fun to research “new toys” to play with, but it’s important not to forget about the music. Without organic sounds, all that stuff means nothing. I also discover some books, quite interesting, far away from gear topic. Right now I’m reading Effortless Mastery by Kenny Werner, and so far so good.
Keep the good work, and thanks again!
A.
Like Bill Frisell for a new century!
Massive compliment! Thank you.
What type of software is James McAlister using at around 21:45 to get the granular sounds?
+Frooka It's called Samplr
First heard your music playing at the Storyville at Pikes one Seattle morning. I’ve been searching for a purchasable recording of it, not sure if it was this exact live mix but do you have anything available for purchase?

Thanks so much!
Hi again Dan. Curious about your guitar rig (pedals and looper). thx.
Hey Vik...I need to a do a video specifically on my current setup and signal flow. But...things you would hear a lot of in this video would be the Hudson UK Broacast Boost, Diamond Memory Lane 2, Whammy DT, and Neunaber WET reverb. Looping is done in Ableton Live with their Looper plug in...various plugs by Valhalla DSP and Soundtoys are used for processing.
