  • Hi Friends, I hope everyone made it through the heatwave. June was an odd month with higher than normal rain but the garlic crop endured.
In this video, I take you along to harvest garlic with me including garlic that is over-ripe to give examples of the different stages. Garlic is always a little tricky because if you are too early then the bulbs will be smaller but if you are too late, they will start to split. With my wall of raspberries, I am able to show garlic at different stages for a good visual- because life does happen and sometimes the harvest gets away from us.
How did your garlic do this year? What variety did you grow and did you like it? In this video, the garlic type is Music and it is my favorite.
I hope you enjoy the video and Happy Gardening!!

"Little roots, hee hee." 😄 I love your personality!
Thank you for sharing this garlic video. I will not give up on garlic, two years trying, and no success yet.

Just found your channel and thoroughly enjoyed the video! Hello from North Texas! I have the same interests but a MUCH smaller garden. Side note: my hubby is from the PNW (BAY AREA) 😂.

But everything is bigger in Texas 😂. Thanks for watching and PNW high five to the hubby.

Some of my scapes tried blooming down in the stalk this year and busted it open. It was an neat discovery for our garden lol

Oh wow, that would be an interesting sight!! I am trying to picture it. A few of my leeks did a crazy thing where they busted down by ground level- I wonder if they did the same thing- I will have to go check. lol.

I harvested some of my garlic today and was disappointed in the size. I grew them in large grow bags so I think I will try them in the ground next year. I grew mostly the variety called Music which I learned about from you. The scapes were great though.

Oh bummer, I’m sorry to hear that. I was just processing my music garlic and the cloves have always been so large for me. What spacing did they have and was there any shade? I noticed in my garlic bed, the ones behind the raspberries (shaded) were significantly smaller.

@@littlerootsranch they were about 4 inches apart and a lot of sun. I did leave some in the pots that didn’t look as dried out so I am still hopeful for some bigger bulbs.

Those are huge garlic bulbs! I grow a lot of garlic, hundreds of plants. Last year and this year, half of my soft neck garlic made scapes! I am certain there was no mix ups and I only save back the best cloves to replant. I may have to try a different variety. I usually make a bunch of garlic braids but soft neck garlic that makes scapes are unbraidable. It's so weird... I have never had issues in all the years prior.

Oh interesting. I have never grown soft neck but I do get green with envy when I see people’s big beautiful braids. For my garlic, I grow Music originally purchased from Mountain Valley Garlic. I am really happy with the size.

Oh man I did something wrong, mine never got scapes and all stems are dried up to nothing 😕
