GI Bill for National Guard & Reservist | How to Get 100%

- If you joined the National Guard or Reserves, you're not going to want to miss out on the opportunity that is the Post 9/11 GI Bill. While it's nearly a guarantee for active duty veterans, it's far from a guarantee for National Guard and Reservists.
Some order count for eligibility and some don't. If you serve 90 days of qualifying orders, you'll receive 50% of the GI Bill. If you serve 36 months of qualifying orders, you'll receive 100% of the benefit and there are incremental eligibility levels in-between. Stay tuned to learn the specifics.

My ng unit used to barely have anyone that qualified for post 911. Then they gave out hella covid orders and some new lower enlisted did covid orders for 2-3 years and now they all qualify for post 911

I’m a reservist and I attended MOS reclass for 13 months and since it was PCS orders, I am eligible for the GI Bill. I know not a lot of people have this opportunity, but it’s possible. Received my LVN license on active duty and now continuing to receive my Bachelors with my GI Bill.
That sounds like a pretty unique scenario. What was the reason for the reclass? Either way, that's awesome you got that hook up!
I finished my initial contract and hated being an MP. I wanted to pursue nursing and when the recruiter told me about 68C, I thought why not have the Army pay for my LVN license. Extended for 4 more years in order to reclass. And now I qualify for the GI Bill because of the amount of time I was on active duty for the reclass. It worked out for me and I wanted to share with others about my route.
I was one of those who got cut off for benefits! Not enough funding for active duty order but the need was there. Very unfortunate. Also was pulled from my special duty assignment to come back to be present for drill weekends. Absolute BS if you ask me. In the process of fighting for benefits.

Has to be 90 days consecutive
Important note: Entry level training does count for individuals with 24 months active duty. Once a reservist hits 24 months qualifying active time they can count their “entry level and skill training”. CFR Title 38, Chapter 1, Part 21, Subpart P, § 21.9640

So pretty much no GI bill for reservist unless we serve on active duty while on the reserves
Essentially... Reserves is rarely my recommendation for the best way to join.
During the pandemic I was on T-10 out of state for like 2.8 months ….like a week shy of 90 days in the USCG/R.

Well, looks like I’m f’d only have 64 days active duty, I have Al ready ETS and I’m service connected 80%. I don’t even think I should make a point of applying for eligibility. I will be paying for College out-of-pocket.

question sir, I'm currently AD, signed a 4 year, and would like to palace chase after the 2 year mark and switch to reserves. Just to clarify, if I'm doing 24 months of AD, that means that I'll receive 80% of GI bill, correct?
That's a really interesting question. That's how I would understand it. I have not heard of any caveat to GI Bill eligibility based on palace chasing. It might be worth waiting till the 36 months to try palace chasing. Can you do that?
@@jasonburds I could, but I’d prefer to do schooling full time in the reserves, get my bachelors in nursing asap, and start my career in the civilian sector. I’m not struggling financially and I’ll probably stay home with mom and dad at the end of the day. Just a hypothetical question!
Maybe I missed it but do title 32 ADOS orders count towards qualifying?
Edit: I hope so because I have almost a year of ados orders. But if not, I have 46 days of Covid orders counting to my 90

I'm looking for a little clarification on something I have not been able to find a straight answer on: I got injured while overseas and rated 100% P/T in turn got medically retired for the injury after returning to the States but I was no longer on active duty orders. I applied for the GI bill and got 60% on the VA website it just states "You served for at least 30 continuous days (all at once, without a break in service) on or after September 11, 2001, and were honorably discharged with a service-connected disability". I brought this up in a supplemental claim and was told because I was not discharged while on active duty it does not count.
Is this true? Does anyone know a good place to ask someone or where it is explicitly stated this is true?
I think you could probably save yourself a lot of time and headache by just applying to use VR&E instead of the GI Bill. I have a number of videos on that benefit.
I have a question I’m 6 months left on my 9 month deployment. Almost 6 year in (almost end of my contract) I got my education paid by TA so I don’t really need the GI Bill.
What I would like to know how can I give that benefit to a dependent?

1000% you can use it for grad school, medical school etc.
If you choose to use your GI Bill benefits, do you have to opt out of your Guard education Assistance program?
Why would you have to do that? They're separate programs from what I understand.
Wonder how this works for your kids. If you never were AD and are a Guardsman/Reserve is there a required total years in on top to transfer? Do you have to be in 10 years? Lots of vague information on transferring this benefit

I’ve been in the Reserves for 11.5 years, courtesy of a full Army ROTC scholarship that carried an 8-year commitment. I’ve recently decided to apply to an MBA program. Am I eligible for the GI Bill-Selected Reserve benefits? Do I need to extend my commitment in order to obtain said benefits? A little more background: I have one deployment under my belt that occurred during the tail end of the initially 8-year commitment. Not sure if the deployment (Title 10) occurring during my initial service commitment instead of after my initial commitment matters.
I would get a certifcate of eligibility from the VA to see how much GI bill and at what percent you have. If you have GI Bill to use, I would use the post 9/11, not the reserve GI Bil. That's not much good in comparison.
Do the aggregate days count for things like TDY trips? I’m 1 year in and have about 4 separate weeks on 4 separate TDY trips. Also does annual training count towards those aggregate days?
Annual training does not. It depends what type of orders the TDY trips are. They have to be federal orders, not state orders.

Once you receive your Gi bill certificate how long should you enroll for school? Is there a deadline for that ? I heard you have 2 months to enroll if not they gonna withdraw your certificate.. Im not sure they telling the truth tho!…
Are you asking how long the certificate of eligibility is good for? It's good until its been impacted. However, you don't get a COE typically until you are actively applying and intend to enroll in classes. Even if they withdraw your certificate, it doesn't really matter - you just get a new one.

If you have 70% of your GI Bill, they pay 70% of the cost.

You can qualify to join without qualifying for the GI Bill? I would definitely take it again. Study more.
