    I love this hymn. We sing it often in my Presbyterian Church.

    I recall this tune as the "Mariners Hymn" and it electrifies any the sacred lyrics. Saint Bartholomew's is an exquisite example.

    1 Lord, dismiss us with your blessing;
    fill our hearts with joy and peace;
    let us each, your love possessing,
    triumph in redeeming grace.
    O refresh us, O refresh us,
    trav'ling through this wilderness.
    2 Thanks we give and adoration
    for your gospel's joyful sound:
    may the fruits of your salvation
    in our hearts and lives abound:
    ever faithful, ever faithful
    to the truth may we be found.
    3 Of your love some gracious token
    grant us, Lord, before we go;
    bless your word which has been spoken,
    life and peace on all bestow.
    O direct us and protect us
    in the paths we do not know.
    4 So that when your love shall call us,
    Savior, from the world away,
    let no fear of death appall us,
    glad your summons to obey:
    may we ever, may we ever
    reign with you in endless day.

    And in German O du Froliche, O Du Selige, gnaden bringende Weinachtszeit is the most comon lyrical arrangement. Here in the states, O thou Beautiful, O Thou Wonderful, Grace Revealing Christmastime is the LBW hymnal translation.

    GREAT job recording this Joseph! It really sounds good in my ear phones indeed. I wish that St. Bart's would finally do something about the acoustics in that church as did Riverside Church, which is the very best example that what they did actually works. Again, great job Joseph!

      The acoustics at St. Bart's are fantastic, especially since the chairs replaced the wooden pews. It unexpectedly made the sound brighter. I'm afraid, though, that the improved sound doesn't translate well through a cellphone recording and uploading to CZcams.

      "FANTASTIC"??? REALLY???? Then I beg your pardon as admittedly the last time I was there, was in 1986 when I last played the organ there, and back in the 70's when I sang there as a chorister in a concert and that room had the acoustics of a coat closet back then. Unless the wooden pews had cushions on them, then that wouldn't have been the problem as that would've been a hard surface for sound to bounce off of. Based on your rather fine recordings (perhaps it's WHERE in the church you're sitting that helps. The balcony position seems to be a good one), I'd hesitate to label it 'fantastic' as perhaps 'better' would be a more proper term. 'Fantastic' is what Riverside church is now in comparison to when Virgil Fox and Fred Swann were there and this doesn't come close to those acoustics. During my next trip to NYC this month, I'll be sure to stop in and have a listen. Despite all of that, it does sound good indeed! Thanks for your recordings!

      I haven't been back to St. Bart's since 1986, and I'm interested in hearing the room now as when I last played the organ there in 1986, the room as it had always been when I was a chorister was about as reverberate as a coat closet....

    We Catholics also have this song but the name is "O Sanctissima" a hymn to the Virgin Mary. Nice to see many variants of this tune!

    How many clergy are on the staff at St. Bart's?

    • @chasflynn2383
      @chasflynn2383 Před 7 lety +1

      John R Johnson. Many modifies a plural noun. "Clergy" is singular.

      Yes, Charles, thank you for your kind correction. My question was less about grammar and more about the number of priests employed by St. Bart's.
