Benji had a loving mother, grandmother, and a future step dad, a nice home, teachers who cared about him. He didn't see any of his blessings. So sad. This young actor Larry B. Scott should have gotten an Oscar his performance he was brilliant.
Because he lacked self-esteem due to the abandonment of his biological father...

Outstanding performance by all cast members and extremely convincing by young Larry B Scott. This film was actually very smart and sharply directed. They should make this mandatory viewing in middle school and up.

What an incredible creative decision using a black & white still frame photo montage showing Benjie in his treatment journey instead of actual filming, it was poetic with every picture giving such full context. Amazing.
That's the best I've ever seen that done.
I am recommending this film to my two shutterbug friends because of those sequences.

We have seen more of him... he was on Barney Miller, Revenge of the Nerds, Fear of a Black Hat... he's so good, you don't realize it's the same guy. He's already a legend based only on "Clap your hands everybody, everybody clap your hands!" Fear of a Black Hat is like a black version of This is Spinal Tap... it's really funny!

Never watched it before but I remember the title.
Just about two years before this film was released MY Step-Dad and making the varsity from grade 8 through to the end kept me from going to juvenile lock up or being killed.

I Loved this Movie! What a Powerful Realistic, and Poignant Film! So intensive Rolls! All the Actors were Spot-On! I'm such a avid fan for Cicely Tyson! This one was Absolutely over the Top Great! Surely a Classic! Sad, True, and so Realistic! I came from a very Dysfunctional Family Lifestyle, but Luckily I Didn't go down that path of NO RETURN! Three siblings are Dead because of it!😢, they think they're only hurting themselves! "They don't Hurt Now"! The rest suffer with the Loss of a loved one! This Movie was Superb in every aspect! Benjie almost gave me a heart attack there. For a minute he had me fooled talking all sensitive to his step dad. So much love he gets, he still cannot feel it. He was a very troubled soul of wich i think his bioligical dad being gone had nothing to do with. This movie is so good and sad at the same time. Thank God for a happy ending😊

i went thru that phase but never with the hard stuff, in the end, didnt see the fascination of it, except MJ helped with hang overs, :), and cross tabs got me thru the night and thru an 8 hr on watch detail. drank some milk at lunch and slept for 18 hrs, never took it again, started acting like contact, trying to push my eyeballs out

Parents are stressful and frustrated, kids think that drugs are cool, they don't see the side of danger and cruelty of drugs. & that result an easy job for thugs to use our children at an early stage. Kids only enjoy watching violence movies
When I was in the eighth grade, I had to use the word hero in a sentence, so I used the title of this movie for my sentence choice. I remember my teacher marking the word aint as being used incorrectly. I guess she never heard of this movie.
