  • CARLTON
Well known as the headquarters for generations of crime bosses, Carlton was also the epicentre to a creative outpouring in the 1960s and 70s that lead to the emergence of a uniquely Australian film and theatre culture. This inner-city gem has always been a suburb of incredible diversity. It’s also home to Australia’s first world heritage listed building, the remarkable Exhibition Building.

lived there in a student house next to the Drummond St Cop Shop for a couple of years - 1972 / 74 - student house with two students and me, a taxi driver / gardener who had a student card for access to the good life at Melbourne Uni. And those wonderful first years girl students during those liberating years ..... I loved Melbourne then and it was soooo different - you could have a great night out for $2 with original music by legends of folk etc. - remember captain Matchbox Whoopee Band? One could still afford the rents in those days, too. Now greed has eaten culture of the people and made us into history. Moved to the bush after 1979 - Melbourne got murdered by Sunday trading, etc. - no more quiet parks and cleaner city air after midnight for a taxi driver to take a breather .... came back in 1982 and got beaten to a bloody mess when I went back to taxi driving at night for a while - in Carlton. Left Melbourne for good not long after that. Coke and bennies are not like the bit of dope and acid that made people more gentle like ten years earlier..... love the clean straight country life now.

How did Tony miss the actual bullet marks in the grand stairwell of Trades Hall? That's where early 20th century Melbourne Gangster Squizzy Taylor sought refuge and had a shoot out with the police!

Strange to see Carlton bustling with people. Absolutely dead now since April :( It will be nice to go back to normality some time soon.

Heh, indeed. Sadly the earliest will be after the us election...hard to ignore that the stalling etc is due to the wider world attitude to it all...

Fire Service Museum you could do a full show on the building’s contents, not to many Melbourne people even know it is their at 39 Gisborne Street, East Melbourne. It’s a great day out if you are in the area, five star.

I lived in Carlton as a kid and as an adult. It’s gentrified all to hell now. All those little terraces are worth we’ll over a million dollars. I don’t think it can ever be the cultural hub it once was. It’s far too exclusive now.

There was a climax and the band set up a chant, ‘s..t, f..k, c..t, fart, bugger off will ya’! The characters came out in their Ninja suits and at that point real relevant officials came through the door and the vice-squad cops who, at that point, started to arrest actors and members of the audience. It was the epitomy of improvisation text and theatre.
