Creepy Bad Endings # 46

  • Bad Endings. I don't know about anyone else, but they terrify me. Just when the hero(es) thought everything was finally right, just when it looked like peace had finally returned to the world, something happens that, at best, creates a bittersweet victory and, at worst, spoils everything and the enemies win, despite everything that happened throughout your adventure. Bad endings don't give you any second chances, you screwed things up for everyone and you must pay dearly...

You know... I legitimately feel horrible for Oersted. He was unfairly vilified by the people, tricked into murdering the king, betrayed by his "best friend" simply because he was sick of not having any glory for himself, when Oersted deserved the glory, basically had his love turn on him and refuse to hear him out...
He really embodies the saying "you either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain".

Sometimes the hero wins and everyone gets a happy ending, but sometimes the hero can do everything right and yet due to human selfishness, misunderstanding, and mistrust it can all go wrong. It is easy to be a hero when the world is inherently good, but it is much harder when the world has those who would betray you or those who won't listen to you. Oersted was a good man whose life was destroyed in a day by his best friend and by the woman he loved. And because of this he turned to hatred, and became a the very monster he set out to destroy. The real tragedy of it all is that in the end, he didn't get a hero's death after all of his suffering, he died in a room surrounded by heroes who never suffered his hardship and monuments to his hatred, and his last words are a desperate plea to not give into hatred like he did before he fades away.
P.S. The princess is a complete bitch. She not only doesn't give Oersted the time to explain what is going on, she cheats on him with this best friend just because he got there first and then stabs herself right in front of somebody who cares for her and who she said she loved earlier. She and that traitorous bastard Straybow belong together in hell.

Jesus, not only is Straybow a backstabbing prick, but also a manipulator to get his way.. Ugh. I still feel sorry for Orsted. Yes, he did destroy the universe basically & yes, he did give in to the despair & hatred in the end, but honestly, who wouldn't go into a hate/despair driven insanity after everything you ever done, ever had, ever loved was ripped way from you by someone who was a close friend?

Honestly... Oersted got his life FUCKED UP.... won a contest, feel in love with a princess only to have her captured (by his friend(?)) tries to save her and fails... thinks he sees the actual demon king, but its actually his own king that he just butchered... and the (second to) last person to believe in him... died. THEN EVERYBODY IN THE FUCKING KINGDOM (Except for the one kid) HATED HIS GUTS... So he thought he would save the princess to show everyone hes not a bad guy... he faces his fears to save his princess only to come face to face with his (Asshole, who also is a pansy) friend who reveals that he set it up... so they have a fight to the death... he wins sees the princess only to have her yell "GET AWAY FROM ME"
Just think if you tried to save the life of the girl you loved, and you had nothing else to go back to since everybody thinks you're a murderer (And objectively, they are not wrong) you had to face your fears came face to face with you friend and had to kill him (Even if he was an asshole, it would still hurt) but you saw the girl that you love and thought just for a second "I did it... I saved her life" and then have her shout at you to get away... Fuck man... and not only that she proceeds with saying she was in love with your recently deceased asshole friend... and then she kills herself...
This is not just him giving up in his frustration... he must have been feeling total despair... I mean, the man had nothing to live for anymore, the one fairy tale he clenched onto with his life just shattered right before him... he has nothing left... He cant cope with everything he is feeling and blames all of his problems on humanity... and so he decides to become the demon king... Its fucking tragic...
    Side note:
I have no idea how Straybow got Alicia to fall in love with him, but i think it was some form of emotional manipulation... some scumbag shit for sure... or at least that is how i interpreted it

      It's a mockery.
Notice how it starts off looking like he's casting a healing spell, with the stars descending and a saintly figure appearing.... before it all burns and the figure turns into a howling figure whose scream damages the player.
It's like Odio is literally transferring the pain of his experience to the heroes. He wants to show them what humanity has done to him and this is one of the main points in his argument.
Such a beautiful idea rolled up into an attack. It's one of my favorite attacks in all of video games.

If he goes out of his way to set up his former friend because of because a woman who didn't even have a say in this arranged marriage among other things, then it shows that he was pettier, dishonest, and more so than Oersted was before his descent. Furthermore, he was too insecure to realize that not only Oersted was honorable in their battle and beat him fair and square and should have honored what he told his friend should he lose, that his insecurity was his problem that he should have dealt with. Instead, he goes through with his insidious plan because he was tired of being second. I dare say that if I were in his position, I would have become the King of Demons as well. :/

It's interesting how this game presents itself. On the surface it doesn't seem that dark. And the choice in setting is most appealing to kids that would play it. What kid doesn't want to be a cowboy, or sneak around as a ninja, or fight as a robot?
But hoo boy, that last scenario turns things on it's head....It takes all the standard RPG storyline tropes and presents them straight at first, then screws you over. When I played this game, I was floored at the way this game ended.

What is interesting is Live A Live is the first known example of a disguised horror story in a video game which is way before Doki Doki Literature Club!, the visual novel that popularised said genre. Better yet, Squaresoft (the SFC version of this game's original publisher) in 1994 did not need to advertise the disguised horror story portion.

In the first game, characters have to DIE before they join your party, and you're forced to witness their final moments. One NPC loses all of her friends (who become party members) and is last seen standing at the edge of a cliff. In the second one, a princess is exiled from her own kingdom, is forced to live with another personality inside of her, is betrayed, watches her father get executed, is forced to turn herself into an undead, and her reward for saving all of existence is death. *SPOILERS BELOW IF YOU PLAN ON PLAYING THE REMAKE. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.*
Oersted seriously deserved better. He was absolutely screwed over big time, with the lousy advice Uranus had instilled into him, his supposed "friend" Straybow orchestrating his fall from grace, and the princess Alicia completely crushing his last scraps of hope by siding with Straybow of all people, essentially saying that her belief in Oersted was either a lie or extremely fickle at best.
Uranus kept preaching about not losing hope as long as someone believed in Oersted.... but what was he supposed to do when confronted with the thought of no one left that actually believed in him? That's something that he failed to take into account for all his talk of believing in others.... so ultimately, Uranus was wrong in this case.
I cannot and will not blame Oersted for ultimately giving up on humanity at that point. He might've been held to a massive standard as a hero... but the reality was that he was human too before succumbing to evil, and there is only so much one man can take before ultimately snapping. All of Lucretia essentially got what they deserved, but it was the fact that he spread his influence out across all time that necessitated his destruction at the hands of the seven heroes.
Was it right to massacre so many in his hatred? Of course not.... but if one ended up getting unfairly shafted as much as he had, they'd probably want to do the same thing.
A truly tragic and sorrowful end for a once heroic knight.
That's my take on the whole thing with him. Thanks for reading.

    • @gregorywalpole8442
      @gregorywalpole8442 Před rokem +9

Yeah, the whole thing is set up to highlight what led to Odio's creation - Oersted losing hope in humanity. Even Hash and Uranus are excellent examples - Hash's decision to close his heart is effectively demonstrated to be the right choice, (IIRC, he gets the plague because he leaves quarantine) and Uranus, similarly, returns to a life of heroism only to be tortured and then killed by the guards. Abandoning the path of selfishness killed them, and it's Oersted's intentions as a hero that lured them back to the path of righteousness, the ideals of which betrayed them all. Oersted must have come to the conclusion that they weren't just correct to have given up on humanity, but *hadn't gone far enough,* as the selfishness of humanity pulled them right back in when a hero was needed again.
tl;dr: Hash and Uranus aren't just there to set up the whole "As long as one person believes in you" bit, they're *object lessons* to Oersted as to why his ideals had been a lie and humanity needed to die. Their unjust fates help lead to his new worldview.

I see Alicia's getting a lot of flak in the comments, so I wanna say that I don't hate her, nor am I angry at her for what she did (I sure was shocked, though). Yes, what she did was wrong and she did them for silly reasons, but I actually empathize with her a bit. Why? Because...watch out, tl;dr opinions incoming.
    1. We never see any siblings, nor a Queen, so it's possible that the King's wife died at some point, leaving him with an only child, thus driving him to coddle and shelter his precious princess and only heir to his throne from that pesky outside world, to the point of making her fatally naive. Papa holds a tournament to determine who her husband will be. She gets to marry the strongest man, and daddy can relax knowing his little girl is in capable hands. Alicia gets a husband that she knows will be able to protect her, thus she loves and trusts Oersted unconditionally.
    2. Demons happen and take her away. She waits for her beloved to come rescue her, only for Straybow to show up instead. He probably had plenty of time to tell her a sob story about how he's a loser at everything and deserving of her utmost sympathy, while Oersted is a smug butt so full of himself because of how much he wins at life, that he decided to take his sweet time getting to her, essentially painting him as the kind of guy she would be utterly miserable to be the wife of, but Straybow came for her because of TRUE LOVE and showers her with all kinds of lovey-dovey bilge! Gullible, naive Alicia doesn't know any better than to think he couldn't possibly be lying to a princess, and decides it must be true love because Straybow is her real hero.
    3. Oersted kills Straybow. Alicia was so thoroughly whisked into the passion of Straybow's sweet talking, that she can't imagine having to live her life without her true love and getting married to this horrible monster that killed him! She doesn't even want to hear what he has to say because she's so upset! Better to die than suffer as the wife of Straybow's murderer for the rest of her life! Good thing she had that weapon in her pocket, it saved her from a terrible fate.
I realize this is all just speculation on my part, and I could be completely wrong about everything, but I think it's possible that Alicia was innocent enough to believe whatever Straybow told her, and that she was just as naive about what love is to think Straybow was the one truly meant for her, and Oersted robbed her of the perceived happy ending Straybow may have been filling her head with. I'm not trying to justify her actions, but I am trying to say that she could've been taken advantage of by a manipulative man, didn't know any better to realize it, didn't have the emotional maturity to really think things through, and maybe isn't wholly worth the amount of scorn everyone's giving her for what she did.

Vevina Candilla Very well written, articulate post! Well said and to be honest I actually do agree with you but didn't know how to articulate it as better as you did. :)
I'm no Alicia Fan either but to be frank it's Straybow I completely blame for this entire mess not her, the calculated backstabbing traitorous bastard of a "friend". True she didn't help and was the final straw which broke the camels back (IE Oersted's Sanity) but like you rightly pointed out, it's possible she's more likely a sheltered gullible girl who didn't know any better.
Then again we could BOTH be wrong on this but hey if we're proven wrong and it turns out Alicia was the true calculated one the whole time then at least we'll be proven wrong together! ;)

Aw, shucks, thank you! I'm glad I was able to unwittingly speak for someone else in the process of speaking for myself. I do indeed feel the blame should be focused on Straybow, since he apparently had an agenda to ruin Oersted's life by turning literally everyone against him, all because he was jelly.
Though, it would be really funny if Alicia actually was the true endgame villain. The Heroes of Time defeat Oersted, then Alicia shows up and is all like "I was the demon all along! BLARR!" *Trueforms*

      @RedEyeSD Před 8 lety +10

Honestly that would make Alicia kind of a badass haha (in a "love to hate" villainess way of course)! :D Now that would make the blame and dislike towards her more justifiable IMO.

I know the question was directed at him, but this game is what sort of got me into JRPGs. I normally can't stand turn-based and menu-combat since it's mostly sitting and waiting and praying RNG goes your way (especially at the beginning). But the battle grid system gives the player a much more active role in determining if they get hit or if the enemy gets hit.
And though it technically still uses a menu interface and turn-based combat (albeit with a unique twist where every single little action counts as a turn, and attacking takes up several turns, with more turns required for stronger attacks), I found it to require active player input enough to sort of get me past the perceived barrier of menu combat.

After getting knowledge of this game some time ago I wonder how the chapters would be in an hipothetical sequel/remake/spiritual successor.
Oh, well I am bored. Here I go:
    -Chapter 1: Ancient Egypt
In the year 12** B.C. the first undead apocalypse is happening. In the Abydos necropolis the dead are walking again, attacking nearby towns under the commanding of a creature believed to be a demon. Fortunately a priest with spiritual powers is willing to end the disaster.
The main character can use a "aura vision" to see clues in the map (Like friendly spirits or hidden details) and in battle, wich may be inocuous except in some moments in the chapters. Discovering all the hidden secrets grants you the good ending.
    -Chapter 2: Imperial Rome
Year is 80 a.c, in the frontier of the roman empire with the german tribes. The fort where the protagonist lives is suddenly under attack by a barbarian horde. As the commander of the garrison, he must hold the line against them and kill the bloodthirsty leader of the horde.
Unlike other chapters, you control a hero with mainly support abilites and a bunch of generic units that must survive a series of battles until the final round with the boss. Depending of how many of them lived, you get a bad or good ending.
-Chapter 3: Pirates of the South East Asia
Indochina, 1410. A land which powerful pirate lords call home. This was discovered the hard way by a chinese merchant after being kidnapped by pirates and must escape of the wretched city they use as a hideout. Unfortunately for him the antagonist is an ex-peasant pirate who isn't very fond of high-class tweets.
As a wealthy man, the main character can bribe his way through the adventure... with the downside you have a limited amount of money. For example, you can use it to recruit characters or buy certain unique loot (But maybe want it to spend it on equipment or healing items). If you adquire it all you get the good ending.
    -Chapter 4: Tomb raiders.
Central America, early 20th century. The protagonist is an archeologist (Read = grave looter) looking for a treasure in a misterious ruined city in the middle of the jungle. But, it just happens this is the resident place of a deity who isn't fond of robbers or living beings in general, trapping him inside the ruins.
Through the chapter, you can freely explore the place, but you are faced with trials to determine the nature of the archeologist's spirit, usually related to greed. You get a bad ending depending of the judgement of the deity. Also, in the bad one you only face a decoy.
    -Chapter 5: Bad cops.
The events happen in a suburb of Miami in the 80's and you have to fight against crooks and thugs and arrest every bad guy that cross in your path. The main character is a cop in search of a mobster, just like a classic cop movie.
There are a limited number of battles, but you must de cautious to not actually kill any of the enemies. Fortunately, the main character have some neat abilities to non-letally subdue them. Depending of the number of kills you get a good or bad ending.
    -Chapter 6: Cybernet
The near future chapter, that takes place entirely in the cyberspace, inspired by things like Megaman Battle Network, SAO or Lain. The year is 21** and the net works pretty much like a gigantic MMO, where you play in online battles but also socialize and exchange information of all kinds. But, some time ago appeared a misterious criminal who takes a pleasure ruining the lives of every notorious people in the net.
As a heroic hacker, the protagonist can use codes to gain advantages in the field and unlocke secure places. However, he can also uncover secrets and information of other people, wich may lead to a bad ending.
If you are wondering how a guy with no physical skills can later appear as a warrior, I reminds you this kinda happened with Cube.
    -Chapter 7: Post-apocalypse
The world has suffered a nuclear war, turned into a desolated wasteland populated by mutants where only strengh matters. Yes, is blatantly inspired in Hokuto no Ken. And yes, the main villain is a despotic overlord who is only challenged by a wandering hero and maybe said hero companions.
The entire chapter is just a boss rush. To obtain the good ending you must rescue all the prisioners in the bad guys lair. Wich may be tricky since some of them are hidden in secret places, are forced to fight in battles or their location are only revealed when you spare some suspiciously coward foes.

      @user-unos111 Před 7 lety +4

New moment of boredom, so here there is the rest of my fanfiction:
      -Chapter 8: The first civilization.
Middle East, year 40** B.C. where the first cities appeared and humanity changed from nomadic to sedentary. The chapter is divided in three chronological steps (With missable content, of course) but is otherwise pretty straightforward. This is supossed to be equivalent to the Oersted chapter
This is the story of a city and its hero/king, which begins with its founding, continues with the conflict caused by a demon and end with a war against another humans. And with each conflict the king hates humanity more a more, until he exiles from his own kingdom. And then the demon appears and tells him he is not alone...
Fill the gaps as you want.
-Chapter 9: The end of the world.
Unknown location and year, but supossedlly far in the future. The main characters of the previous chapters awake in a strange barren land filled with ruins from different historical periods. Only the characters you got a good ending in their respective chapters appear. In the land there are exclusive dungeons for each one and bosses based on fusions from previous ones.
Plot-wise, the party discover the "Oersted" from this game already caused a massive disaster (Probably tied to the chapter 7) and that strange land was created based on his memories, which they are part of. But it turns out he doesn't think humanity is entirely wretched, and the characters represent his memories of good humans he met in the past.
There are 3 possible endings, based on the ones from the previous chapters:
      1) Bad ending (Bad endings only): Once you choose the last chapter is an automatic game over, "Oersted" decides that fuck everything, humans are always bastards and Earth is reduced to a lifeless rock.
      2) Bittersweet ending (Bad and good endings): You face the king as the final boss. The heroes manage to change his way of thinking and turns into the ruler of humanity. Buuut, Earth is still a post-apocaliptic land and the demon is still around.
      3) Hope ending (Good endings only): You face first the king and later the demon as the final bosses. Both of them die, but he uses the last of his and the demon's power to create a new fertile land.

More like "Then Tetsuya Nomura happened". That guy is a budget sinkhole on his own. Poor Tanaka gets a lot of flak because FF XV, but people forget that he had to make, not finish, *make* , the whole game in about two years, after Nomura wasted more than four years and a ton of money on barely nothing.
Hell, I love how people like Naoki Yoshida had thrown daggers at Nomura, with sentences like "I like to first finish the story before even starting to write the code. Otherwise, you keep changing things and your projects won't get anywhere".
I admit that, given enough time and budget (meaning too much), he can make a decent game, but he should focus on art design and let being the project director to people who are able to actually finish projects. And the writing to people who are able to not feel the need to retcon everything twice and can actually write a story that doesn't confuse even the writer.

This game looks pretty interesting, actually. In fact it may have made me set aside my doubts on whether or not a 16-bit JRPG can convey a good story.

+King Harkinian and the various FF games and Chrono Trigger DIDN'T?!?!........Won't argue that Live A eviL blows em outa the water but STILL

    • @Faapu
      @Faapu Před 8 lety +5

might have something to do with the fact that I didn't play them lol

    • @syrelian
      @syrelian Před 8 lety +8

King Harkinian well ya should, tip, on SNES FF6 is FF3, and its just better on GBA anyways, bugs are fixed, and just generally its better, eg Sketch won't make the game suffer an implosion
Also Chrono Trigger is best on DS, some say the music loses some, but between the little amine style scenes, and the general improvements, the DS is the best choice
Sadly Live A Live only is on SNES and only in English through a ROM Hack, so you'll need an emulator for that one

I can understand how Oersted felt, I'd have done the same thing in his situation. After all, "odio" means "hatred" in Italian.

      I think this too.....
Oersted is a honor knight, live in the light, but become a demon king in the end.
Oboro is a ninja live in the night, as a Assassin he need to "unhonor", but he become a hero.
also, Oersted giveup believe humanity, and Oboro always believe sun will rise.

    Oersted has memory flashes.
If you head to certain areas after people died during the chaptur
    1 at uranus' house
    1 at hash's grave
1 at where alicia got kidnapped.
