- Well after a crazy little session over on the other side of the river Mersey at Brunswick, we decided to head on over to Fort Perch to fish in to the evening and low water.
After the torrential rain (storm Babet) passed we were left with a reasonable evening, now all that was left were some fish, and boy did they arrive. A fish a cast was the order of the night, with the majority of those being small dogfish (lesser spotted catshark), but we had a good share of flounder, dab, and whiting too.
Then around an hour before low it got crazy. I struck in to a big bite on the pulley rig which started a real fight. After that the big bites continued, and we were in to good fish.
Tackle used:

That weed shows no sign of disappearing, does it. I want to start fishing more 'local' but its really putting me off 😂

Great vids from the Mersey.
At Perch Rock when you get right down at low you're casting over the ledge into the channel. Your lead can get buried into softer sand. Once it's buried it can take a big pull to get it out. We've resorted to using lead lifts before now on there. Rays can bury themselves at the best of times and in that soft sand it can be a pain 👍
A few have mentioned that ledge now. I'm definitely going to look into lead lifts for the next session
Definitely help get your gear back, not sure how much they help with a fish on the end though.

When you said whiten weed an a bag an a doggy I'm sure that was a huss..... Great effort in them conditions keep them coming
It was certainly a lot lighter than some of the doggies we were catching, but sure it was a doggy. The nasal flaps are quite clear on a huss.

Hello mate, not usually first to comment but I seem to be this time, got out yesterday and had a couple of nice chub. River flooded again today after more heavy rain last night. I love your sandwiches, my pet hate is poorly filled sandwiches, cheers Neil

Joined my mate a couple weeks ago on the river I wouldn't even attempt it now. All the rivers around us are still in flood so you're doing well.
As for sandwiches, there should be a law about the filling having to give all the way through, not just at the bit on display...boils my...

I was considering taking the cockers this week, but battling rays and entertaining wappy cockers sounds like a recipe for disaster.

Great video Alex, nice to see your Dad fishing with you. I lost a big bass off Mumbles Pier many years ago. Got snagged up and had a break off. Next cast I managed to catch a Gull that got caught up in my line. I was gutted. Bad session.

Eazy alex and ya old man you ok, well done on session , but shame about the one that got snagged up. Ya old man made me laff when he got his double shot of dogs hahaha. I did a mad one saturday morning, got up at 1 and set off at 2 a.m on my bike to near entrance to g.y. docks . It was a whiting frenzy and completey ran out off bait for a first for a long time. They was all 30 to 35 cm and i lost count in the end how many . Am still waiting for my first codling of this season. All the best from GRIMSBY.

Good session Alex, we've all lost fish, sickening as it is, we know it's part of fishing and we just wait for the next one. You mentioned conger had been caught, it could well have been a conger you hooked, they'll head for any snags they can. Tight lines my friend, just remember why you're there, you're out fishing, with your dad, catching fish.
Oh, 100% Graeme, doesn't take the sting out of it, though 😅 I think my stubbornness is going to get the better of me and I'm going to have to go back and try again

Yeah I'm kicking myself now. any other mark and I'd have left it on a light clutch. No idea why I just decided to go for it...impatient. now I know about the ledge I'll know better for next time
12:14 Those rays clamp down on the banking. Best to just wait it out. They move off eventually. You've got to bully them to keep them moving or else they clamp down.
I think I need another trip with some heavier gear and touch more patience

Great session Alex,shame about the lost fish. The rays can really hug the bottom there which makes getting them up the steep bank a tough task sometimes,plus with the number of anglers fishing it all year round you`re bound to get caught up on a lost rig now and again....when we have big tides/storms the leads on those lost rigs can get buried deep which makes getting out of a snag pretty difficult..
So many people mentioning the bank. Wish I'd have been more patient. Also making me want to go try again.

Great session Alex. I've been there many times But I have never fished there. Congratulations for the conger. I think the one snagged must have been a conger. There is some.cod coming out of humber now so think about spending sometime there. I'll probably go tomorrow morning. The weed has been absolutely crap at North east coast for sometime now and I'll seen how it is tomorrow morning at North withensea
Yeah that weed shows no sign of moving at all mate. The next couple of weeks I'll be on the hokderness for sure

They have plenty backbone and a beautiful rod to cast.

Yeah I'm kicking myself now Kevin. Any other mark I would have given it slack and left it to it. A few have mentioned about a rock bank on the edge of the channel. So I'll know next time to take it easy.

That snag your feeling mate is a steep drop off intimidating the channel I always use a lead lift on yhat Mark just to get leadupsraight away

That's a very good question mate. I haven't taken a fish for the table for some time, I'm quite selective. But definitely through winter I'll be doing a few catch and cook sessions.
