Teaching Session, How to Ride Electric Unicycles (EUC's) 101 to complete novices

  • As more people see the EUC's and are picking them up without local mentors to assist them, I've been getting asked a lot by viewers of my CZcams channel "how do you ride the damn things?" by those trying to learn on their own.
    So, I made a video using a person who wanted to learn how to ride, filming her journey from never having ridden one all the way to being able to ride one around a parking lot for 10 mins (the mTen3 is magical). Took about 90 mins of training in total, but though the magic of video I've compressed it to 60 mins without really loosing anything (I hope). Thought I'd share it for those that might find it helpful.
    This video is about Teaching How to Ride Electric Unicycles. It's long and shows the full process start to finish for a single rider. I thought it was best to show it all rather than edit it down, though in places I have sped the video to shorten it where I can without compromising the value for those trying to learn on there own.

    I'm 53, today is day 4 of learning to ride my first EUC (Begode RS high speed). They are not hard to ride, but they do take some learning so you do need to invest some time and effort to be able to ride one. This video shows a pretty good example of what a person goes through to get to where they can ride and even after this there would be plenty of practise needed to become comfortable. If you are learning - keep at it, everyone you see riding on youtube would have been just as new as you at one time.

    Should use a string attached to the top and hold it, this way if you bail out, you can catch the wheel from falling to the ground. I did this, and I have like no scratches on my wheel when I was learning to ride it, haha.

For me too many of the other videos make it look too easy. Because of the rain here my few attempts at learning have been confined to the narrow deck on the side of my mobile home. I am so happy that I watched this before I graduate to a parking lot.

      Peter I had the same thoughts lol. I am 43, started on an Mten3 about 2 months ago. You will fall off/crash/jump off ect. The ligaments around my knees hurt a lot at 1st & didn't think it could do it. I bought knee braces with metal hinges to help prevent hyper extension when I fell. Also get wrist guards & helmet. Once you get the hang of it and can ride "relaxed" you will love it! I am at the point I can throw the Mten3 around. It is a combonation of flying & standing on top of a sports car :) You will do fine 👍

  • @TLYRIDER
    @TLYRIDER Před 3 lety +2

    That's impressive, I got it for almost 1 week now and I still can't balance. I am practicing in my backyard which has high grass on a KS14D. Should I go to a parking lot with slope, would that make it easier to learn/balance as the power might be an issue. By the time I put 2nd foot on it and move 1 second, I loose my balance.

    • @michaelpaolini
      @michaelpaolini  Před 3 lety

      It took me 2 weeks at 15 mins a day.
      The general issue is if you don't have great balance to begin with it, it takes a while for your brain to grow the synapses. So if you are having issues, just do short practices every day, and at some point in the 2nd week you should start to have success. :)

    Awesome video man. I’m loving this. Do you recommend a good tape to protect a new unicycle? A tape that won’t leave residue on it when you pull it back off. I receive my new KS 16 S tomorrow. I really don’t want to scratch it to death as I learn how to use it. LOL

    • @michaelpaolini
      @michaelpaolini  Před 5 lety

      Couple of options. They actually sell Unicycle Tape on Amazon. Also on eWheels ( www.ewheels.com/product/soft-padding-protective/ ) Tends to also show up in baby stores and bumper padding for baby proofing.
      The some places make specific covers - either cloth or otherwise. As I recall someone in the community makes custom Fiberglass covers for protection (and they look sharp).
      My advice would be the Bumper Padding if you really want something. But in general to go naked for the wheel as they are pretty though and you really need to treat it like something you can and will jump off at any time to save your own neck. But know if you really need to, the sides are very replaceable and pretty cheap. :)

    Just an awesome video, thank you for making this. Going from the Airwheel to the Mten3 reminds me of when I learned how to skate. Had a crappy Walmart board it was slow and tricks were very hard for me to land. Then I just decided to get a legit pro board and *bam* everything was so incredibly easy for me instantly. I think that juxtaposition in hardware is necessary and makes you appreciate learning something new no matter how fast you learn or how intelligent you are. She could have started with the Mten3 and learned quicker, but I think now she could go back to the Airwheel and ace that as well since she knows how bad an EUC can be. Now she can ride anything and adapt.

    1. how to start and stand on the unicycle without falling, minimal movement.
    2. how to move forward and break, learn to control speed.
    Let them practice this for a bit, so they do this multiple times at low speeds.
    3. how to turn - at this point they feel comfortable standing on it already.

    It was great to see her riding! I just got back from about 1.5 hours of practicing on my first EUC (Kingsong 14) that I borrowed from a friend. I wish I had someone to help me but I went about it by myself just like learning my Onewheel. The joy you all felt at the end when she was able to ride the MTen3 was very enjoyable. I was also smiling once I was able to stay on the Kingsong and do laps around the big parking lot like I did on my Onewheel last year. I will continue my EUC adventures on the S18 when it comes around. A suspension EUC is going to be great.

    Hi, thanks for sharing this video. I’m considering a Tesla or a gotway mcm5 because I’m a bigger guy 240#. I would also like to get some decent range too. Would either of these be suitable for me or should I start with something lower end ? Typically I’ll need 20 mile range. Speed is not an issue and 10-15mph is perfectly adequate once I get the hang of it.

    • @michaelpaolini
      @michaelpaolini  Před 5 lety +1

      Hello.
      So I started as a bigger guy to (237 pounds), and through diet and EUC's I've dropped to 210. Keep in mind with gear on, you may be as much as 20 pounds heavier.
      The EUC's certainly struggle more at the higher weights, and so you want the bigger motors and bigger battery packs for safety. Also keep in mind as the battery drops, so does their available power. This means at 50% battery you have less speed and reserve power available to you. at 20% battery it's typically 1/3 of what you started with.
      I'd pass on the Tesla completely at this point (payload 275 pounds). At this point it's old technology and being replaced by the Gotway Nikola (Think of it as Tesla 2 because Nikola was Nikola Tesla's first name. :) ).
      For myself I own and ride an MCM5 (and have several videos on this channel on it - payload 250 pounds). I bought it when I hit 210 which was my weight goal for 2018 as a present to myself and motivation. Knowing that all of these struggle with weight and that uncertainly of build quality and testing was really effective in helping motivate me stick to the diet because they are a lot more fun to ride as you drop, and it's safety - and the thought of busting an axel or peddle... So net net, I believe it would work for you, but I have hesitations because it's not designed for that weight (axel etc). Having a reward motivator, super helpful. Also I'll warn you though, it's a rocketship and an advanced wheel (like the Tesla and the Nikola). I've had experienced rides step on it and scare themselves with the acceleration. The MCM5 is roughly a 30 mile wheel, but at our weight class sit's a solid 20+.
      Ideally the wheels you would be looking at in your weight class that are best imo would be the Ninebot Z10 (claimed 325 pound payload), and the Gotway mSuper X (325 pound payload) and King Song 18 XL (325 payload). ALL 3 are 18" wheels, that will do 20 miles at our weight (the MSX and 18XL should do 40+ with the 1600Wh versions). Both are expensive ($2k), but worth it - and you can't really do better in 2019 or outgrow either. The Nikola may also fall into that category, but the specs are final and released yet so we don't know.
      Also keep in mind, you can learn on a used one (because you are going to beat it up). If you were going to do that, the KingSong 16s would be an ok choice. I also own, ride and love the Gotway mTen3 (payload 200 pounds, though I started riding it at my naked 220 weight point) - it's a little harder to learn to ride (it's the one she is riding in the second part of the video), but a blast, also it's only $800 new - but it won't have your range requirement at your weight, though it would probably make 15 miles.
      Something to consider is if it's 20 miles round trip you need, they sell fast chargers, and charging at your destination is also possible.
      No on Tesla, possibly on MCM5, and a big yes on Z10 and MSX and KS18XL.
      Hope that helps.

    • @pentachronic
      @pentachronic Před 5 lety

      Very helpful thank you very much. KS18 was another one I was looking at. As far as weight I won’t drop much as it’s muscle mass from other sports !! So it looks like I’ll need a higher payload EUC. Price of $2k is doable but a bit of a sting if I find it doesn’t work for me. Maybe I need to find someone local whod be willing to let me have a go of theirs !!

      Gazza-usa the KS18 will absolutely work for you. In my opinion, it is THE wheel to own. I would personally not recommend Gotway. Their build quality is just not up to the likes of KingSong, Segway, or Solowheel. Also, the KS18XL has a top speed of 30mph, and a range near 60 miles per charge.

    • @michaelpaolini
      @michaelpaolini  Před 5 lety +1

      Just FYI I own and use a number of Gotway, I learned on a number of KingSong. I've had fewer issues on Gotway then on KingSong. Even on the latest generation, if we compare the mSuper X to the KingSong 18L & 18XL - we can see that there were virtually no issues reported on the Gotway while the KingSong had both battery issues as well as Trolly Lockup and sensor issues.
      I think you are dealing with old data and perception, and further for myself I rank Gotway > KingSong.

    nicely done. i prefer teaching ppl with my normal wheel. just do as you did from around minute 9 to 9:50. just longer and a bit faster. do some light jogging speed beside her. slowly run some big O shape. for turns tell her to move the shoulders while turning. or just slow down and she turns automatically. also practice small slalom moves on the straights. the first rounds grab her hand tightly, then after some rounds, only put out your arm letting her grab as she needs ... from this stage you can either continue running beside her or get on a second wheel. ride as faar apart as possible ofc. just put out your hand so she can grab it for small corrections. ... thats pretty much it, without hurting ancles or unicycles. depending on the person, some ride after 15 minutes others take longer. after that improving start/stop and slow riding skills is only practice without hurting wheel or legs.

I bought an e-board but I'm thinking about selling it and switching over to one of these instead.

    • @michaelpaolini
      @michaelpaolini  Před 5 lety +2

      solarjinx your weight + safety gear and possible something like a camelbak put you at the upper end of the weight spectrum.
      For safety reasons you want the largest motor + battery pack you can get (as the battery drops the motor power drops so bigger batteries - greater safety in addition to range). Also hill climbing ability matters. :)
      Solid choices include Gotway 14” MCM5 800wh (I own and ride this the most - its a solid 20+ mile range), Gotway 18” mSuper X 1600 wh (350 lb payload pad I believe), Ninebot 18” z10 1000wh 0 (350 lb), KingSong 18” 18XL (1600wh). Just out and looking good as well (though I’m waiting on reviews) the Gotway 17” Nokloa.
      Another choice I absolutely love, the Gotway 10” mTen3 512wh - this would be the smallest option, and also he most fun. However it isn’t really a long range commuter, which I think would be okay for you.
      Be aware all f these are advanced wheels, and among the best you can by. Preferences will have to carry you the rest of the way. Given a choice of one for myself, it’s he MCM5. Given a choice more than that I’m hoping for a 1600Wh z10 (z16?) to be announced because an 18” wheel should have an al day 40+ mile range. If they don’t announce that I might go Nikola because a view the cut-off lift and carry switch as mandatory on modern EUC’s (neither the mTen nor the MSX in the above list have that, but the other do).
      Keep asking he questions, I’ll help where I can. Also I’ve got videos covering most of these units on this channel if it helps.

    • @michaelpaolini
      @michaelpaolini  Před 4 lety

      She is using a regular bicycling helmet - I’m unsure of the brand. Sorry.
      In general for helmets you want some thing comfortable (so you will wear it), with a snug fit and brim that extends past your nose (so if you face plant your face,jaw, teeth, nose are protected from injury. MIPS is also desirable if available.
      My half helmet is a Thousand Heritage, and I love it. I have face-planted at low speed with it, and am pleased to say that while I was dizzy and seeing stars from the impact, I suffered no injuries.
      My full face helmet is a Bell 3r, and I also recommend it - on a night ride In which I had a GoPro mounted on top of it, GoPro and my helmet caught a low hanging tree branch at about 12 mph, enough to snap the mount (as designed) and give me a solid impact. Again no injuries resulting.
      My wrist guards I consider the very best you can buy after trying a number of them. They are Demon Flexmeter doublesided d30 snowboard wrist guards, and run about $80 us. I’ve gone down on these, repeatedly, at speeds and always shrug it off with no pain (which I can not say for other models). D30 is an amazing material.
      Somewhere on this channel I have a safety gear episode if you want more information. I’m also getting ready to do an update on it for protection options for the lower half of the body.

      The mounting challenge. Mostly its fear. Stand next to the person let them hop on, off, on ,off for a few minutes while holding one hand. Make sure to explain that to let the wheel naturally lean against your leg and don't push or tip your toes.

    • @wheeldood6130
      @wheeldood6130 Před 5 lety +1

      Regarding pushing. there is a difference between holding one hand on the side or standing in front of the person holding both hands. The reason for this is . You can put one foot in front of the wheel, so when they mount, the wheel wont move away. When you tell tell the person to lean forward and push as when they want to push a wall makes them fast understand that the motor is strong enough to hold you upright even if you lean forward. For myself it does work very well. I do use an Airwheel x3 , and I do not experience problems with pushing, just do it in a moderate way. Grass has several advantages. 1st : The person won't get hurt when falling off. 2nd : the legs get trained straight away off road. which is quite important because if you ride around you will have places where the wheel hits uneven surfaces and that could a new rider easily throw off. So i prefer to teach people on grass to prepare new riders straight away for these kind of situations. But thats just my experience with teaching others. Its great you teaching. Have fun mate.

      I think 72 is the oldest person I know of that learned.
      Also your wife is not wrong - these are motorized vehicles and can be dangerous. But that is what all the pads and protection gear is for.. :) To my mind the benefits outweigh the risks. In particular the core strength and strengthened stabilizer muscles and improved balance that are side effects of riding. These will serve you even when not riding. :-)

    Hello!
    Javaslom, hogy próbáld ki a magyar rollerező technikát!
    Könnyű, gyors, biztonságos.
    Előszőr csak rollerezni tanítsd a kerékkel. Amikor már ez megy, (egy lábon állva, a másik pedál felcsukva, több métert tud gurulni), akkor hajtod csak le a másik pedált és lassú mozdulattal rá teheti a másik lábát. Ilyen egyszerű és rendkívűl könnyűvé válik ezzel a tudással a fel és leszállás is. Általában 10-30 perc míg eztmegtanulja valaki. Én így oktatok egy V8-al Budapesten, Magyarországon. A tapasztalataim alapján a V8 ideális oktató gép.

      Neil Fastfreddie Anderson sorry to hear this.
      There is another technique for learning that might work for you though - using a wall. It’s shown here: czcams.com/video/t6o8ZMlo5ko/video.html
      I’m also reminded of a third method I saw which used a modified walker/stroller. They raised it up and welded wheels on it allowing the person learning to hold on to that while riding.
      In both cases though, it’s unclear to me what might happen if a coughing fit hit you.
      I do love the Fat Tire scooters - much safer then the little wheel version - they share that in common with the EUC’s. :)

      (you can see him in some of the other videos).
      The bigger EUC's have a payload limit of 325-350 pounds. (23 stones - 25 stones)
      For myself I lost 2 stones learning to ride and riding, and have kept them off.

    • @michaelpaolini
      @michaelpaolini  Před 4 lety

      Jamal Benhamou I had a hard time believing it also given it took me 2 weeks myself to learn - which is why I kept asking. She hadn’t ridden before, I verified it later with her boyfriend. More I’ve now been able to repeat the process with 2 others who also learned in under an hour. (Though on the other end I have one student who has taken more than a month and weighs in at 260 pounds - part of the problem there is lack of EUC power compared to his weight).
      The wobbles are typically caused by lack of confidence and the stabilizer muscles being in poor condition. Her stabilizers were likely in excellent condition, as was her balance. Another factor here, lighter riders have an easier time because the EUC has a surplus of power for balancing it self and accelerating. The rider confidence we addressed by walking with her.
      One other thing I’ll point out, you can see similar results in similar on kuji rolls instructional video (and for that matter all around CZcams).
