After the recommendation of a VERY knowledgeable friend and Discus breeder in London, I've added normal table sea salt to my tank to treat a little ich that was present on my tank boss for some time. Fish already looks much better in 2 days. And I think, my already colorful cichlids even have more intense colors now. The table salt I used is pure with trace elements of anti caking agent (Silicon Dioxide and sodium ferrocyanide) that is nowhere near any amount harmful to fish. Normal pure table salt, even with iodine and anti caking agents is fine to use as treatment or in lower amounts, as a preventative. I don't think paying more money is worth it. My friend gives lectures in Universities on fish and is a reputable discus breeder in London. He has successfully used table salt as treatment for decades. Thank you for the very informational video on the different types of salt and their uses.

    • @KaveManAquatics

I agree the iodine amounts are so insignificant that it isnt harmful at all. My issue with the table salt is the caking agents. I just dont feel comfortable with using it. But if its working well for you, I'm glad to hear it! 💪

The use of salts was common and dates very far back. It fell out of favor around the time all of these aquarium “products” began to be marketed to the general public. When I started In this hobby I couldn’t get a goldfish to live more than a few months…..until I discovered salts……….One discussion with an “old guy” and Iwas suddenly successful.

Instant Ocean Sea salt is the best, IMO. I’ve been using it for years. I dissolve it in hot water, then pour it in at water changes. I haven’t had any type of parasitic, bacterial, fin or any other type of breakouts in my tanks since I started using it years ago. The Rift lakes are literally diluted sea water anyway. IDK, just my 2 cents! Blessings.

I have a roughly 5 or 7 inch comet goldfish with dropsy in a 10k+ gallon pond. None of the other 40 or so fish in there have any problems but this one has dropsy. It has bloated slowly over several months, i originally thought it was eggs until the scales started to pinecone. I do not believe the problem is anything other than bad genetics because it's a comet based on none of the other fish being affected for several months. But I want to relieve the bloating with salt. Once I remove him from the pond and put him in a quarantine tank what kind and how much salt should I use to suck the water out that is swelling him?

Wonderful video on aquarium slats and the different ones available. I have heard of epsom baths for fish if they have Bloat and stuff. In my CA/SA tank I dose salt also but not a lot just enough to put some in the water. In my 55 gal and 20 long planted tanks I can’t really use a lot of salt. I use half the dose if I do dose aquarium salt. Because as you know some plants are sensitive to salt in the water. Appreciate the videos brother. Do we have any new tanks coming in? Certain salts are essential for water hardness, such as you mentioned for the Africans, thats why i dosed seachem African lake salt due to my low gh and Malawi buffer for ph and kh. Not a lot of people talk about gh and kh as it is important per regional cichlid. Central American cichlids can get away with close matching parameters as Africans whereas MOST south american cichlids require soft low alkaline water. The only SA cichlids that can get away with 7.4-7.8 ph with slight water hardness are umbee, oscars, red terrors and green terrors.

    • @KaveManAquatics

Occasional flashing is ok. They might have irritation to changes in temp or PH which occur naturally. If its excessive flashing then you could have a problem. Dosing cichlid salt for them regularly is great, if you wanted to also dose Aquarium salt do it sparingly 1-2 months apart. Thats how I use both. 😁

So I have had my peacock and hap tank set up for for almost 6 months, would it be ok to start with cichlid lake salt now? Or would it shock the fish because I have never used it? And if I do use it how do you keep the water in balance, if I do what I think is a 50% water change and let's say it's 45% and I add 50% of cichlid salt for my water volume, the salt content would slowly rise if that makes sense, would it be ok to skip a salt does ever now and again or would that bother the fish because it isn't consistent? Hey everyone. I’m giving away some Mbuna cichlids and don’t want them to go into the wrong hands. So I figured if you are here on this channel then you must love fish and care to learn about keeping them properly. Anyone interested, let me know!

You can but start with a low dosage and work your way up from there if you don’t see any signs of stress.

@@KaveManAquatics I've used it for treatment baths & added some to the tank but not a lot as I have Kuhli Loaches in the tank too. Also used Epsom salt baths but not had a lot of luck with them. Epsom salts are good for plants too so I've added some in the tank from time to time, again not often. Great video btw 😁

@@KaveManAquatics I'm doing a 75 gal with Fx6, lots of rock work (texas holey rocks for ph buffering) and was considering doing an mbuna tank with males and females and then adding a few male peacocks and haps. Do you think it could work? Was considering 1 male, 3 female colonies of yellow labs, yellow tail acei, clown lab, and rusty (16 mbuna total) and maybe 5-7 male haps /peacocks. Thoughts?
