Plenty of actual Japanese people simply use bread crumbs for panko, as "panko" quite literally translates to "bread crumbs". It is traditionally baked and shredded. You're thinking of corporate/factory/sometimes-restaurant types of panko. Please do your research before you spread false information.
I remember watching Usagi/Serena eat some takoyaki and thinking she was was boiled potatoes with toothpicks 🐙 i believe I saw this on or the movies, the one about an astronomer and a woman from the moon. a takoyaki episode could be fun!
I'm so glad you clarified the pork being allowed to be barely pink. I'm always paranoid about undercooked pork and even when the thermometer says it's over 140 I still think it's undercooked and like 30 extra seconds is all it takes to make it dry...makes me feel better 😂
@@yungwildnfree So pigs are not picky eaters and can be cannabalistic the people that raised them would take advantage of this by feeding the pigs what ever food leftovers they had including meat and vegetables that have gone bad this caused pork to be very unsafe unless you cooked it to a high enough temperature and caused pork to have a bad reputation. I genuinely don't think you understand how important these videos are. Im an ignorant nave when it comes to cooking but you simplify these dishes that even i believe i can do this and will attempt to do so to bring a different food into my family taste buds. Thanks Alvin, you're a GOAT and anytime i see you in the video title i know you'll steer me into a fun new dish 😊
I remember having a really bad day once and to make me feel better my girlfriend made me this with a porkchop over some Japanese curry she made with rice. It helped a lot and I now associate Tonkatsu with how much I love her
You can buy panko bread crumbs. That works fine. I make this all the time. Raw cabbage isn't my favorite but it goes well together. You can use the back of your knife to tenderize the meat too if you don't have anything to bash it with. This is my favorite way to eat pork.
@@notmefrfraw cabbage help alleviate the heavy taste from the katsu, pretty refreshing, though I like to have a light dressing on the cabbage. Also miso soup helps wash all of this down
I learned to make Tonkatsu after living in Japan for a few years, and it's become one of my family specialties. My only 'big' change is using garlic salt instead of regular salt when seasoning the pork cutlets, to add a bit more flavor.
We discovered tonkatsu when we studied Japan in our homeschool world geography unit a couple years ago. I called it "Japanese Southern Food" because a deep fried pork chop is definitely something you'd find here in the South! We loved it so much when we made it for the unit study it became a regular meal in our rotation and we actually plan on having it again this weekend. :P
I NEED more cooking mama videos. The more literally you follow the instructions in the game, the better. I’d be willing to see you follow the game first and then improve on it, if you like.
My dad taught me that if you cut diagonally to the meat - specifically, around 30-45° to the muscle fibers - you end with a much more tender cut. Works phenomenally for preparing venison and wild pork.
This was one of the easy recipes in the game and I STILL have Cooking Mama, Cooking Mama 2: Dinner with Friends, and the Cooking Mama Wii game. These games gave me a love for cooking as a teen!
With the TTYD remake on the horizon, I'd really hope you guys try and tackle something from the first three Paper Mario games, lot of potential from them I'd say.
Its cool to see a recipe for tonkatsu, ive wanted to try it since I read "Tondemo skill de isekai hourou meshi" because they made the idea of it sound so delicious. I plan to try it soon and im super excited
Tonkatsu is my favorite meat to accompany japanese curry! Otherwise topped with tonkatsu sauce, japanese mayo and a bit of nori is an absolute classic and tonkatsu sandwich is something I've eaten a lot when in japan.
There's a lot of mileage in doing recipes from Cooking Mama. Especially if you're sticking to the methods shown. I look forward to you attempting the cup noodles stage of the game.
Hi! Love your videos, been subscribed since the old krabby patty video from years ago. I was wondering if you’d make the lamb stew with dried plums from the hunger games books? Every time I read it, it sounds so appealing and I wanted to see your take!
Try chunking up the bread into bite sized pieces and nuking it in a food processor until it stops screaming. Either that or wait for it to stale before you grate it.

yall ever just save the end parts of the cutlet and save it to the very last bite cuz of its crispiness? cuz i do and i use it for the most perfect bites!
I feel like we absolutely need either the cloud bread or yakitai (well, taiyaki) from Hirogaru Sky! Precure, in the show when trying to recreate yakitai for Tsubasa they make so many interesting fillings for taiyaki and I think it's worth a shot
Hey, Alvin! If you want thinner slices of shredded cabbage, you can use a vegetable peeler like how they shred cabbage for bun bo hue! Hope this helped :D
Cooking mama is one of my favorite nostalgic game series! I had almost every game in the series, including the spin-offs (my favorite spin-offs were crafting mama and camping mama). Funny. I had a deep fried pork cutlet for lunch yesterday. It had been 2 years since I ate that dish. It was so big, I needed two (small)bowls of rice to finish the 2/3s of it. It cost me 9,800 won(roughly 7.50$) but it was worth it.
I know this is from the game and I always appreciate making everything from scratch, but to make this recipe more approachable and easy (especially if you are intimidated with deep frying)... do yourself a favor and just buy the Panko Breadcrumbs and the Bulldog sauce, they are both very "authentic" and honestly hard to beat. It's like Heinz Ketchup... you could make your own ketchup but do you really need to?
Fresh Breadcrumbs... Salad Shooter or commercial grade equivalent with grater attachment. I'm pretty sure Kitchenaid makes an attachment for a stand mixer that'd make quick work of this task.
I think the highlighting of the use of fruit is related more to the cost of fruit there than anything, maybe a westerner version should similarly use ingredients that we consider premium and pair well with tonkatsu.
You know you could have used a day-old stale bread for the breadcrumbs. By the way, I have a request: how about Haru's homemade cat food from My Roommate is a Cat? It'd give us another chance to see Bucky.
Yes, the perfect dish for police interrogations. You ought to do a Pizza Tower meal at some point, be it the Primo Burg, Nice Nachos, or one of Peppino's famous pizzas (we never actually see one in-game, but I assume it consists of mushroom, cheese, sausage, tomato and pineapple toppings)
I just had a weird idea for an Arcade with Alvin. Do a burger from Burgertime. (Cheeseburger topped with hot dog, egg, pickle, and pepper. Gamers who remember the game know why.)
So I have a question about the Tonkatsu sauce. Is there any liquid (broth or oil) in the pan with the fruits and vegetables right at the beginning when they are softening.
FYI the bread used for panko isn't traditionally baked, it's electrified between two electrodes, which is why it's so light and flakey
Adam Ragusea has a video on this! Really informative

Yeah pork is no where as unsafe as it used to be since pigs aren't fed slop anymore but actual pig feed.
I agree with you

Huh what? Can you rephrase this for non foreigners? What happened to the pigs before they where „actually fed“ thanks.

You can eat medium rare pork. It's not like chicken, it's safe to eat basically raw. Trichinosis has been almost entirely eradicated in the west.
This dish has a special place in my heart. 25 years ago it was the first Japanese food I ate on our first date with the woman I would end up marrying.
