The hacker Kevin Mitnick says he treated his fugitive status like a big video game.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
KEVIN MITNICK:
Kevin David Mitnick (born on August 6, 1963) is a computer security consultant, author, and former computer hacker.
At age 12, Mitnick used social engineering to bypass the punchcard system used in the Los Angeles bus system. After a friendly bus driver told him where he could buy his own ticket punch, he could ride any bus in the greater LA area using unused transfer slips he found in the trash. Social engineering became his primary method of obtaining information, including user names and passwords and modem phone numbers.
Mitnick gained unauthorized access to his first computer network in 1979, at 16, when a friend gave him the phone number for the Ark, the computer system Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) used for developing their RSTS/E operating system software. He broke into DIC's computer network and copied DEC's software, a crime he was charged with and convicted of in 1988. He was sentenced to 12 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release. Near the end of his supervised release, Mitnick hacked into Pacific Bell voice mail computers. After a warrant was issued for his arrest, Mitnick fled, becoming a fugitive for two and a half years.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Mitnick gained unauthorized access to dozens of computer networks while he was a fugitive. He used cloned cellular phones to hide his location and, among other things, copied valuable proprietary software from some of the country's largest cellular telephone and computer companies. Mitnick also intercepted and stole computer passwords, altered computer networks, and broke into and read private e-mail. Mitnick was apprehended in February 1995 in Raleigh, North Carolina. He was found with cloned cellular phones, more than 100 clone cellular phone codes, and multiple pieces of false identification.
After a well-publicized pursuit, the FBI arrested Mitnick on February 15, 1995, at his apartment in Raleigh, North Carolina, on federal offenses related to a 2½-year period of computer hacking.
Mitnick served five years in prison - four and a half years pre-trial and eight months in solitary confinement - because, according to Mitnick, law enforcement officials convinced a judge that he had the ability to "start a nuclear war by whistling into a pay phone". He was released on January 21, 2000. During his supervised release, which ended on January 21, 2003, he was initially forbidden to use any communications technology other than a landline telephone. Mitnick fought this decision in court, eventually winning a ruling in his favor, allowing him to access the Internet. Under the plea deal, Mitnick was also prohibited from profiting from films or books based on his criminal activity for seven years. Mitnick now runs Mitnick Security Consulting LLC, a computer security consultancy.

TRANSCRIPT:
Kevin Mitnick: When the government was chasing me I wanted to get a sense of how close they were and to me this was a game. It was kind of like I was a little bit insane and I treated my fugitive status as a big video game. Unfortunately, it had real consequences and why I did this psychologically is I loved putting myself in dangerous situations and then trying to work my way out of them. I don’t know why I liked doing this, but I did. So what I did is I hacked into the cellular provider in Los Angeles that serviced the FBI cell phone numbers of the agents that were chasing me, so to make a long story short I was able to get the cell phone numbers of the agents and then by hacking into the cellular provider I could monitor where they physically were, physically in Los Angeles. I could also monitor who they were calling and who was calling them.
So based on my traffic analysis and my location data I was able to find out if the feds ever got close and one time they did. I had an early warning system set up in 1992 when I was working as a private investigator in Los Angeles and when the warning system was tripped off I found out that the FBI was actually at my apartment and I was a mile away in Calabasas, but I just drove in from the apartment to work, so obviously they weren’t there to arrest me and I didn’t think if they were still near my apartment that it was to surveil me, so the only logical thing is that they were there to conduct a search and that means to get a search warrant. They didn’t have a search...

If they didn't touch the doughnuts, they weren't real cops.
Two simple reasons why they wouldn't - departmental policy and taking the doghnuts would be tantamount to admitting they got outplayed.
BipedalP314 not to mention they could have been drugged for all they knew
But they were agents
@@deoxal7947 why are you replying to stuff from 5 years ago
why not?
The majority of commenters don't see Mitnick's point that if he could do this 1992 with the sparse monitoring capabilities then, imagine what a today's mitnick would be able to do.
Surely, now that people like Mitnik turned comms and the Internet into a jungle, so every company had to ramp their security, such things should hopefully be harder?
Mat Broomfield What i know of that industry hackers hack so security gets better but then hackers get better which makes security get better which makes hackers get better it's just a loop. Security's better than it was in 1992 but so are the hackers. People always find ways around things it's just a matter of time. Theres no such thing as 100% secure.
it's tougher now that we have the NSA
+Jonathan Ventura It's probably _easier_ "now that we have the NSA". They created back doors in everything which _anyone_ can exploit, not just them, and they weakened encryption protocols and forced major tech companies to halt the development of better security.
The NSA is also not a recent development, it has existed since the 1950s and before that under other names. Bush signed the [un]Patriot Act back in 2001, probably without being given much choice, but that simply expanded the illegal vast power and control they already had. This isn't a conspiracy theory, the laws weren't put in place post-9/11 for legitimate reasons (that's just a front). The NSA was conducting surveillance on the 9/11 hijackers _before_ the attacks happened, and were then given more power after since they did such a good job. Targeted surveillance, mainly of dissenters and peace activists, has been going on for a century and mass surveillance stretches back a lot further than PRISM.
Not exactly cause 'security' does not progress linearly, yes advances in computer
security make it harder for hackers to exploit previously trivial vulnerabilities but as
technologies are getting more adapted and more complicated the attack surface gets bigger and bigger in a world where even your fridge is connected to the internet any kind of security guaranty is of the table, IT companies prioritize functionality and ease of use over security and quality of their products so actually today it's much easier to do what Mitnick did (not to say that it's easy or anything) let alone the amount of information you can find publicly, just search how to hack X on CZcams and you'll find hundreds of results showing you how to exploit real world systems...
There should be made a movie after the life of this guy.

Troll FBI?
1. buy up hundreds of HDD's
2. Fill ALL of them to full capacity with 10-hour clips of "heyyeyaaeyaaaeyaeyaa"
3. Name each file something something sketchy like "little girl sucking"
4. commit a crime
If the police search your house and find your HDD's, they'll have to watch every second of every clip to search for illegal content.
spending all that time naming those clips, you're only trolling yourself ^^

Just like when George Mallory was asked why he wanted to climb Mount Everest.
"Because it's there."
His stories are changing. If you watch his interview with Current Challenging he says that the FBI did find the donuts, yet here he says he wasn't sure if they even found them. He's a master social engineer, that's for sure.
they probably found it , but he cant be sure since they didnt take any

FBI man I clicked this on accident I swear
FBI: We're tracking you.
Him: Uno reverse card.
Absolute mad lad if you know you know.
The fact that he was able to do as he did in 1992 is thought provoking enough for this to be on Big Think. If you are less than 25 years old, the only way to understand how amazing (even if wrong) that was, is to read up on telecommunications and hacker history (I recommend starting with Sterling's The Hacker Crackdown, www.mit.edu/hacker/hacker.html ).
You were one ballsy wacko Kevin.
When I saw the title I checked to see if this video was uploaded on April 1st
Thanks, Big Think. This video was life changing. I'll wake up tomorrow and do everything different.
"Ghost in the Wires" is quite a book.

I love this guy make a video game about his life😂
I could not help but face plant myself when I read how many people did not see a point to this video. So I will give some extended ideas for it. How about the fact that this guy could use the information that the country had, in particular information about the FBI and he was able to dodge them. He was doing exactly what the CIA are doing to many, many american's and they could do a lot worst. Or how about how lacking security really is when everyone is using the same internet? Why doesn't the communication, police and defense sectors use there own damn internet?
kevin mitnick really is a legend

Imagine being the guy who has to wade through 10+ hours to find that...
we're probably on a watchlist now, thanks youtube :)
mitnick is a god 👏👏👏👏
Mitnick needs to open a school for hackers so we all can monitor the cell phones of law enforcement, make them look like fools. I love this video
They will then come up with a better system.
Agreed...what? They can keep tabs on us but its a no-no for the other way around? I think not...what, will they be soo butthurt when thier details are thrown out into the open, such as social media? Yea..agents, cops etc have alot of butthurt complexes, you can see this in how they treat civillians, beat men, women, they kill children, cover up thier wrongdoing.. i could go on and on, but that will probly be a waste of much time...
I would give anything, even my aging parents, to be able to fuck up the system of law enforcement,
+Jim Beattie Unfortunately that will just result in them being arrested, for that to work most people would have to be monitoring law enforcement (they can't arrest most of the country). He does sort of offer a "school for hackers" through the presentations and demos he does, but everything is on the up-and-up now [or so we're told lol]. You can learn enough to figure it out if you want to take the risk and "monitor" LE calls.
Back in the day before smartphones, mobile phones were still using decades-old security - and I use that term loosely - and ciphers, not sure about the current situation but it seems to be more about malware and social engineering now, dominated by true criminals out to make a profit. There's no way to construe it as white hat so you'd have no protections or legal defense, and you probably would not be called a "hacker" in the courts and media but a "cyber criminal" i.e. I would not try it if I were you, you could be facing a long prison sentence or worse, not worth it just to make them "look like fools".
Edit: Just realized this is a really old comment thread, sorry.
They already are fools, and I don't think I'll get into hacking and listing to endless hours of boring crap. But your comment was informative.
I love this man. :D
