Fun fact: when Hyolyn was first promoting as a soloist, she did a lot of busking, so there's a bunch of performances she's done in public spaces with just her, her dancers, and some speakers. There's even a video on her channel where she gives an impromptu performance of See Sea while having dinner in a seafood restaurant lol I'm guessing she promoted that way was because she was setting out on her own without the resources of a big company, but it's really cool to see that less polished, down to earth side of kpop, where it's just the artist and their talent on display.
if you want a love song/ballad from her, her debut album "Love and Hate" has "closer" and "falling" which are two amazing songs that fit what you're looking for!
I do think sketchbook is actually more raw, Hyolyn will also be there for the last episode with the rest of her member, Sistar!
I'd love for you hear Erase and Love line from her, I think Hyolyn adjusted her voice for each song
Love this reaction and vocal analysis!!! This is so refreshing to watch, I've been a fan of Hyolyn for 12 years and K-pop music for longer. This is just something to think about but Korea really loves female singers that have high-pitched voices or that sing in a higher register. I don't know why but they find that really appealing and it often forces females who don't normally sing that way, sing that way. IU for example is the most popular soloist next to Bol4 (in terms of their music charting and longetivity) because they fit that vocal tone Koreans love and they have many songs that fit the coffee shop vibes and often gets their songs replayed in shops or restaurants. Many of their songs chart super high for a long time after release. I feel like this is one of the reasons why Hyolyn plays around with her voice and often sings in a higher key (baby voice) because that is what the general public in Korea prefers to listen to. Not just her but many female idols in different groups that have deeper voices are often forced to sing in much higher keys that don't suit their true voice at all. While Hyolyn can hit those notes very well and still sound good no matter what, she has admitted in the past that her head voice is her weakest and when she left her old company and became independent the first song she released is 'To Do List' which she claims is her hardest song to sing because she uses her head voice a lot, so I think she took singing lessons in order to strengthen her head voice which ended up improving a ton and it also changed her singing technique quite a bit. Her voice sounds much more healthier now than ever before. However, you can still hear her force it at times especially when she sings in a higher pitch. I really love hearing more of her lower register but it's so unfortunate that she has to sing songs in a higher key to cater to the public preference because that is what helps her songs get played and it also helps her gain more recognition. Her voice is so incredible and so unique but still generally underappreciated. I also feel like she hasn't even shown her full potential yet because even though she is independent and has the freedom to experiment, I don't think she will ever fully step outside the box with her music because she loves R&B so much but I feel like she would sound so amazing in other genres like rock ballad or something. Check her out on the show immortal song. She was on there when she was just a rookie. She has so many amazing stages that showcases her versatility but I don't think we will be able to see much of that side of her because it isn't popular especially for the younger generation.
I appreciate this comment!! Yeah I can definitely tell higher voices are appreciated waaay more in Korea, I noticed this with Taeyeon too who has a really nice and seductive lower range which she rarely uses! Lee Hi is probably one of the very few mainstream ish singers with a deeper sound!

I was wisting for someone who knows about singing to react to this so I can watch it alongside them for the first time. I’m happy you did! 🖤 I agree, the overly produced quality of the recording takes away from the personality of the performance. I also agree with your comment ‘idk about some of these songs’... same. I... adore her so much, she has one of the most beautiful tones I have ever heard, kpop and not, and I just wish her songs were on par with her talent. Now, obviously this is my opinion and she does what she loves doing, but after hearing songs like ‘gone not around any longer’ ( I hope you know that one, ughhh, my fav ), ‘my boy’ even ‘dally’, I can’t help but want her to do music like that. I’d like a more mature sound from her and an identity as an artist, not just as vocal talent. I know some would say ‘well queen of the summer is an identity’... yeah maybe but the songs are not always the most impactful. She is a gem in the industry but she is just not where she should be, she should have at least half of taeyeon’s sucess for example. I just want more for her, I hope the hype from queendom will do that. 🥺

I love Hyolyn to death but I can’t lie this killing voice I had been looking forward to so much didn’t deliver for me, Now we all know miss ma’am can SANG and she does that here but like you pointed out I wanted more rawness and also some of the song choices were just not it for me.
I'm not sure why she didn't choose some of her vocal-heavy songs. I would've loved to see 9Lives, personally.

Killing Voice is definitely not completely raw. They added a lot of reverb and stuff to CL's for some reason, maybe because she has a lot of hype songs so they thought it fitting, I don't know.
