What's the approximate difficulty or grade level to do okay in a typical college orchestral flute audition?

hi Superblonde - good question. It definitely depends which college you are applying for, as they will each have different standards. (And I don't know what each college's level is). And it also depends on who else is applying at the same intake as you! I would suggest getting yourself to the best level you can be, then go for it! And if you don't get in, try and get some feedback from the auditioners and then fix what they recommend improving and then going for it again the next time you're able! Good luck!

I have a question. The third button on the flute what is it used for? My band teacher put a sticker on it so we wouldn’t press it

Haha yes I put a sticker on my young beginners flutes too :) The third key that you are talking about is really just an extension of the 4th key - you'll see they move together. The hole below the third key has to be there for the notes to sound right, but of course we don't have an extra finger to operate that key, so it has been attached to the 4th key to make the flute playable by humans!
