    What Roman is complaining about when asking for a low range/torque converter is a lack of torque moderation. An electric motor can deliver 100% of its torque from 0rpm, so a torque converter isn’t needed. A low ratio isn’t likely to be required either as the final drive (single gear) should deliver enough torque at the wheels to do anything you want. The problem to me sounds more like there isn’t enough control of the torque delivered to the wheels by the throttle pedal. That’s really a software problem. A mode with an extra long travel throttle would help.

    • @tareskisloki8579
      @tareskisloki8579 Před rokem +4

      That's true, the problem is wheel speed not torque. I've found it myself with my Toyota, even though it has the torque to climb an obstacle in high range, the wheel speed causes wheel spin and you lose traction, so they need a mode that simulates low range by reducing the revolutions in relation to throttle input, as well easing on the torque so that it doesn't immediately break traction.

      EVs will get better!
      The motors will get better, probably Axial Flux Motors will be used as they can be used with a transmission. Ok, Axial Flux Motors are higher torque but have lower revolution speeds so I am serious about the transmission part. The software will get better, but in the mean time maybe they can have a override mode. The batteries will be able to hold more power which means less of them will be needed and the vehicle will get lighter.

    You need suspension travel for off-roading/crawling. Jacking the air suspension to max is severely limiting the amount of wheel travel which is why it goes back to default height when locking the diff I think. You guys can test this for yourself by doing a simple 20 degree RTI (Ramp Travel Index) test. This will show that in default mode you will get a higher score compared to full jacked mode. Furthermore the full jacked mode is not intended for crawling but simply to clear a difficult obstacle once.

    • @hermanjohnson9180
      @hermanjohnson9180 Před rokem +1

      There may also be mechanical / engineering reasons. Like wear and efficiency. Unless we're a mechanic who takes the thing apart or we ask GM there's no way to tell

    • @RobertPitas
      @RobertPitas Před rokem +23

      Full Height mode is ONLY to get you over an obstacle that you are hung up on, it’s not meant to drive around on while you’re rock crawling. I think to show what this truck can really do you have to read and understand the manual. You keep trying to do what you would do in a gas truck, rather than learning how to do it in the truck you’re driving, so it’s not surprising it’s not working.

    • @qo2rj
      @qo2rj Před rokem +4

      Agree completely. If you are engaging your lockers, it is most likely because you are stuck / getting stuck / having not enough traction. That being the case, having more droop / down travel may very well help

    • @hardtech1
      @hardtech1 Před rokem +8

      To be fair given the screens it should tell you why you cant engage something when trying to engage it. This isn't the day in age were you just have a button or a toggle and you need to know the steps and procedures. I get it maybe not telling you the first time because maybe you pressed it by accident but if you keep hitting the button to go up and it wont due to setting it should trigger a help prompt. This also tells you the vehicle isn't broken and you are doing it wrong. Is this a toy for the rich? Sure is. But it is the future.

EVs are great if you don't drive far, offroad, tow, have time (hours) to wait to recharge, and a F-ton of money to spend. But when going up a ledge you need maximum torque to go up it, then you instantly need almost no torque once the wheel is on top of it. Letting the electronics control the speed/position of the motor instead of the torque accomplishes that faster than any human driver could react.

    First, Roman has to realize that part of the limitations of the Hummer has to do with user error. As experienced as he may be with rock crawling, this is a different type of vehicle that take some getting used to. It think that should be the biggest takeaway from this demonstration. Simply being different doesn't mean not as good. There's just an additional learning curve.
    In any event, the D-ring sticks out another 4" beyond the bumper in a location where even fractions of an inch matter. It currently can flip down, but in this case, it might have been better for it to flip up. Maybe future models it will be able to flip up over or blush into the bumper.

If you look at Africa and Australia, no electrical infrastructure to really speak off, and 1000's of kilometers between our stops would make it unworkable. And that is not even the biggest issue, imagine you are on a 2,000 kilometer trip, in the middle of nowhere, and the electronics starts acting up? Just as big NO as far as an adventure 4x4 goes... Will take the most basic Ford / Jeep / Toyota every of day of the week if I actually had to do remote wheeling.

Heck, you could get pretty awesome build in most other 4X4's and have enough left over to outfit your home with solar, or buy an efficient daily driver if you want to feel like you're helping the environment or whatever. Especially considering people are offering near 200k for these early Hummer EV's.
