  • I will replace the rear driver side malfunctioning drum brake cylinder on my 1979 El Camino. This particular design is different than other cars, because it doesn't use the bolt on cylinder, but locking clip cylinder. I will show how i removed and installed the cylinder. Enjoy!

How do you bleed the brakes with the bleeder valves being recessed into the brake cylinder?

Clip is the hardest part... I used every word in the book that day 🙄

AND I THOUGHT THE 78 Oldsmobile 2 bolt system with the fitted dam plungers that suck was bad! that clipped to hold the cylinder on the rear-end Really sucks😁

Hey! I have a problem with the brake cylinder and clip, when i installed the new one with a new ring, the whole cylinder is so loose. Its twisting and eventually pops off the brake band. Have you ever been in the same situation or have any tips for me to "tighten" the ring so it wont twist? Its not mounted firm.

Hey I found the replacement bracket part number. No need to use that pita retention clip. Raybestos part # GMB 25851

Couldn't you have just cut the clip and pulled it out and just gotten a new clip?

I tried that but the wheel cylinder would push away from the backing plate when I tightened the clamp. I put the handle of a pipe wrench in between the wheel cylinder and the inside of the hub to hold the cylinder in place. Did you use something to hold the wheel cylinder in place?

I used a 1" diameter conduit coupling, two inches long and a long reach C clamp. Used some grease too to help seat the tangs. What a pita. Poor design!

They made a tool for that so you know CZcams wont let me show you the picture of it. Basicly a spreader with a twist knob.

You know a lot of dealers try to make things so that only they can fix them you get frustrated give up you call them to pick up your vehicle and fix it, typical.

Why couldn't they just bolt in on

There is a kit that does just that. I seen the kit on a el Camino talk forum. Sorry I don’t have the part number, it’s basically drilling to pilot holes in the (drum brake plungers)brackets top left/right tabs. And using two sheet metal screws to hold the brake plunger tight to wheel brake backing.
