- Part one. Afro-Puerto Rican rhythms. | Bomba is a traditional music- and dance style in Puerto Rico, also one of my favorites (who am I kidding really, I love all of them).
"Bomba is a musical expression created in Puerto Rico at the end of the 17th century, by West Africans and their descendants who worked the colonial sugar plantations along the coast of Puerto Rico. Through fiery drum rhythms and improvised dance, the cane workers released feelings of anger, resistance, and sadness about their condition."

Briana Carrión thank you for sharing your videos. I have a comment about your description. The term Afro-Puerto Rican is not accurate, we don't use that term here it is an American invention due to the fixation of American society in race. We Puerto Ricans are just ONE race( mix of Spanish, Negro, Taíno and many other migrational waves) our society is not divided in races as per American standards. This music has African, Taíno and Spanish influences as well the same mix that made us Puerto Rican. So my point is: this is a Puerto Rican Rhythm, the term Afro-Puerto Rican is incorrect in that context. It comes from an American point of view not ours as Puerto Ricans. And as we say here: " ¡Y tu abuela a 'onde ehtá ! ", "El que no tiene dinga tiena mandinga"
@frenchy role Ask ANY Puerto Rican how they identify themselves and i guarantee all will say "Puerto Rican" and not white or black, people of all colors suffer the same in PR no matter what, and... we all help each other and get along without seeing color, before you comment do some research and visit the island, you might learn something.
@frenchy role Misery loves company, sorry for you
Puerto Ricans are mixed, but they're still black. El cafe con leche. Todavia es cafe.
@@luisperez4134 This is not true at all. The reason many Black Puerto Ricans do not identify as such is because of the historical implications of being Black. Puerto Rico is not void of racial erasure and injustice, and this is the reason Black Puerto Ricans in the past would not identify as such not because of this puñeta idea that every race is treated equally on the island because this still is not true. Black Puerto Ricans still suffer significantly greater than white ones, and the ignorance and erasure of these issues that you white and mestizo Latinos promote is the main reason it still happens today.
