“How brands use influencers to normalize $3000 handbags” made me think of how say yes to the dress made me think it was normal to spend thousands (like tens of thousands) on a wedding dress. Like oh she has a low budget of $3000, like $3000 is a chump change amount of money.

I mean at least expensive wedding dresses are usually tailor made to fit the buyer; of course you can always argue about if spending that much money on a single garment for one day makes sense but to me that's still worlds apart from a bag that expensive you don't even get to choose the colour/size of.

The rich strongly value exclusivity. That’s all there is to it. To be in the “club” and to have that VIP treatment. It’s not really about the money it’s all power play and ego. That’s why many millionaires and billionaires hustle despite the fact that they can live many lives over without having to work at all.

It's a community that constantly steals from artist (regardless if they are alive or decreased; Qinni) most who don't have the time, money, and legal resources to get them taken down. This includes myself, so if someone steals my art, I'm never going to see that money. You also have to pay to get NFT's minted, which can cost a bit of money. • @knmplans
      @knmplans Před 2 lety +154

Well that’s different. Jane Birkin met the designer by accident and they tried to come up with something. Jane herself said she was carrying a straw bag because oversized handbags weren’t really a thing at that point. So they were starting from scratch so to speak, I suppose you could consider it failed prototype from a practicality perspective. Where the Kelly bag is concerned, that was a bag that had been on the market for a while. It was a bag Grace Kelly had in her closet and when she was looking to shield her bump from the press, it’s just what she happened to grab. It just got so much attention because she was constantly carrying it front and center that the company renamed it for her.

So I have owned both a Birkin and a Kelly in my lifetime. Both I purchased second-hand and ended up selling them for more money than I purchased them for! I wore each one time.. once..
The only reason I purchased both bags was I had/have plenty of other designer bags and for some reason I thought that having these bags and these status symbol products would bring me happiness. I was insanely depressed and in a horrible abusive marriage with a man who had a lot of money, I also make quite a bit myself but he held the majority. Lived in a big house, drove a super nice car, had everything I wanted. But I would buy myself designer bags and things I feel to make up for the massive hole in my life, but no matter how much I tried.. it never got easier or better.
I ended up catching him cheating about two years ago and kicked him out, I sold my entire collection of bags (20-25 designer bags) and I only kept 3 of them that were the most important to me for various reasons. I basically paid off my BMW with the Kelly sale alone.
I cannot even express how absolutely toxic I feel that the designer bag community can be, specifically Hermes and the way they almost brainwash people into thinking that by owning this basic boring bag you will somehow fulfill your life’s ambitions and goals. I realize my reasoning for purchasing was toxic in itself..
I now carry a $70 converse backpack, drive a Jeep Wrangler and live in a small duplex with my plants.. and I couldn’t be happier.

What I think people get wrong about it is “the game” aspect of it. Yes, people complain about the work you have to put in to get one, but if the Hermes people REALIZE that you’re putting in the work, then they don’t want you to have it. They only want people to have it who don’t even give it a second thought because they just want to gobble up all the overpriced French swag. People who walk in and drop thousands here and there just for shits and grins are the people they want. So some people buy buy buy from them but never get one, other get offered multiple a year.

I randomly saw a post on an expat Facebook group where these people sold an idea of girls making extra money. I called the number and they explained their scheme, which was to pay girls like me to wait in the line at the Hermes flagship, dress nice, and try to get an “interview”. These people said they needed burkins for Fashion week to have for their models… sure. Also if you’re successful for the interview, you call them and someone they’ve planted in the store meets you in the bathroom and you give them your passport and they give you the money to pay for the bag… then you switch back when you give them the bag. I was desperate for money and stupid and naive and I waited in the line. I was denied at the door lol so I got nothing out of it but the whole thing was such a scam!!!! I can not shake the feeling that the system to get these bags were designed to make fun of rich people. The reason that the resale is so high is probably because the buyers hated what they were given and wanted something better. Also, selling your belongings is an insult to many rich people. I would not be surprised if they purposefully gave people bags they knew they would hate and would have to settle for or sell. It would not be surprising if they hope that the customer would come back again for another try to get something more to their tastes and therefore have to buy more. Kind of like a really expensive lottery. Personally, I do not see anything of value with these bags either.

Some people don’t get it - that maybe the “luxury” brands are just not interesting for some people. I really like fashion, clothes, bags…, I just don’t give a … if they are designer or not. I value a piece from a thrift store that I paid 0,50€ for the same as I value a coat for 400€. I just don’t care. I would never wear a T-shirt with a brand name on it across my chest, because I am not a walking bilboard and if I should do that, I should be paid for the advertisement for the brand, not the other way around.
But some people think that it’s just about not being able to afford it, so that’s why you talk like that. Which is not true, I might buy an expensive bag one day, I just don’t see the value of it for myself at the moment. I think fashion is for fun, it’s a visible extension of my personality and I don’t see myself as someone who needs a logo-anything. I would pay some amount of money for a beautiful well made quality bag, but never for a logo, I just don’t like it. Period.

We walked in and the salesperson gave us a dirty look because we don't look like rich people and didn't greet us. Then my sister was bending over looking at a scarf on a little plath thing and started drooling... but couldn't feel it since her face was still numb 😂. It was right about to drip off her chin onto the scarf so I pushed her back and we promptly left, laughing our heads off 😂 the salesperson looked like they were going to kill us!! I also think Hermés is a very fascinating brand due to their lack of any standard marketing. Most other luxury brands, no matter the price, have some sort of marketing. As you said, brands like LV and Chanel and Dior do occasionally pay influencers to promote, not to mention the constant print ads and billboards they plaster throughout the world. Hermés however is much different, and much more expensive than most other houses, and I just find it very fascinating how they’re still able to move so much product without using much advertising. The only real things they advertise is their non-Birkin products such as scarves and perfumes, and even that’s rare of them to do. It’s just wild that it’s essentially just a word-of-mouth status symbol. I do think their egregious buying process adds to this mystique as it adds a level of rarity to the brand. Now whether it’s genuine rarity or manufactured rarity, that’s a question you’ll have to determine for yourself. I think it’s a bit of both. Lol oops I just went on a long tangent… My bad. What they mean are the old money families (think the Vanderbilts or other generationally wealthy families) who buy these things because they value the quality and not the name. okay so i did some inflation calculating and all the bags cost around $5,500-$6,500 (w the 2000 price increase not being as big as it sounds) but their 2014 price jump was clearly just about creating more exclusivity in the brand and more specifically the birkin. i can see a justification for the other price increases, but there was no reason to double/triple the bags cost other than keeping people from buying it.

My math could be off because I'm using 1980 as the reference point for the 80s price, but $2k in 1980 is $6,823.98 today and $4k in 2000 is $6,530.73.

I can't remember which video you last mentioned Luke in, but THANK YOU for doing so bc I absolutely LOVE his content! It has made the whole fashion world so much more palatable, accessible, and interesting to me!! Between the two of you, my recommended has shifted to much more informational content and I am so excited to keep learning from y'all.

I remember hearing about Birkins years ago and always being fascinated by the exclusivity. This video was amazing. I’d love to see more of these kinds of videos. 💖

Oh my god my friend got roped in by some Russian Hermes resellers in Paris to try getting birkin bags from the flagship store that the resellers would then sell back in Eastern European countries. They would hire a variety of young women for ~$500 per trip, get them appointments, train them on how to answer the questions/what to say/how to act, list of preferences, and even lent some of the girls designer clothes to wear to these appointments to help their chances. They would schedule and rotate the girls to not make it too suspicious for the store and give them the money for the bags, but from what I remember it was still quite difficult, my friend went a few times and never managed to get a bag. It was quite sketchy and really weird, I never understood what it was all about until now 😅

I was *incredibly* disgusted when I heard that they justify the price with it being a hand crafted. Oh really, hermes? How much did you pay the person who made that bag? You fucking say to the public "this person's work is THIS valuable, we just can't lower the price", yet I'm damn sure you pay just a tiny fraction of the bags' price!

Apparently they get paid somewhere from 60-100k a year so the pay is fairly decent but that is a great point considering that their wages are paid for by selling like 5 purses

In this one situation it is part of it. Chanel and the others… no. They’re using underpaid immigrant labor and charging thousands for a bag.
