  • On 4th November 2017 the Lightning Preservation Group, based in their 'Q Shed' at Bruntingthorpe Airfield/Proving Ground (formerly RAF Bruntingthorpe), performed a 'Lightning Double Twilight Scramble' in memory of Air Vice Marshall Peter Collins, who was associated with the Lightning between 1959 and 1977, as a member of the Air Fighting Development Squadron responsible for introducing the Lightning into Royal Air Force service. AVM Collins subsequently flew the Lightning with a number of squadrons, including 11 and 111 squadron, the latter and 19 and 92 Squadrons at RAF Gutersloh as squadron commander. The demonstration depicts a typical scene from the height of the Cold War, with both Lightnings scrambled from an Operational Readiness Pan (ORP). This film covers the afternoons events, the 'Scramble' itself and the subsequent photo shoot.

    Awesome footage, it took me back to my time in the RAF serving on 5 (F) Squadron at RAF Binbrook and also on 56 (F) Squadron at RAF Akrotiri. Would love to see these birds fly again. I did QRA duties many times on both squadrons.

      Ednam, thankyou. Those must have been wonderful and evocative times. QRA must have been interesting. It would be marvellous if they could fly again!

      A pleasure and I'm glad that you could see it from afar through this. They have 2 or 3 events annually, so you may get an opportunity in the future hopefully? They have a website here - www.lightnings.org.uk
      alternatively there are also other groups at the same location operating Buccaneers, a Comet, Nimrod, Victor, Hunters, Sea Vixen and various other aircraft (only ground running though). A Phantom will also be arriving during late 2018 - currently on loan to the RAF Museum at Cosford for the RAF 100 celebrations in 2018. These groups hold 2 combined shows every year called 'Cold War Jets'. Only one was held in 2017 though. Other websites to keep an eye on for future dates are here - www.victorxm715.co.uk/forthcoming-events/
      and for The Buccaneers - facebook.com/Tbagbruntingthorpe/ (a planned event for April 2018 advertised here).

    Wonderful footage of the BAC Lightning. Reminds me of the planes of 74 squadron at RAF Tengah in 70s.

      Thanks. That must have been a great base to be at, especially with the Lightnings and working in shorts thanks to the heat?

    The second Lightning should have fired up the second engine early on, but Wow, superb work.

    Wonderful footage of this Lightnings! It would be great if they would fly on the RAF's 100th Anniversary at RIAT next year. Thanks for sharing! :-)

      @HighFlight  Před 6 lety +1

      Thankyou. That would be wonderful, but sadly just a dream in UK skies - maybe elsewhere would be possible?

    • @knightflightvideo

      It seems that the Lightnings (and other jets at Bruntingthorpe) are in flyable conditions. Too sad when these will not take part at RIAT 2018. :// The last flying Lightnings were in South Africa, based at the International Airport in Cape Town (Thunder City). But after a crash in 2009 all aircraft were grounded. In October 2012, three Lightnings, 3 Buccaneers and four Hawker Hunters were put up for sale.

    • @HighFlight
      @HighFlight  Před 6 lety +1

      The UK CAA won't allow Lightnings to fly on the UK Civil Register as they are classed as a 'complex' aircraft and for many other reasons. The only way that one could legally fly in the UK would be if it were under Military Air Authority regulations, either flown again by the RAF or by a Military Air Contractor. Hunter Aviation based at Scampton is an example of the latter and regularly fly a Hunter and have a number of other military jets including a Buccaneer and Phantoms. Maybe one day they will fly these and others at UK Airshows?

      This is boring Britain mate, no chance! This country isn’t proud of its achievements no more! Even the yanks are trying to get one flying! Rather concentrate on how to rip us off more than do something nice for a change

    • @HighFlight
      @HighFlight  Před 6 lety

      Unfortunately it's just static. Hopefully one day that'll change, but I don't think there are any plans presently to get it running unless a nice benefactor comes up with engines and more?

    • @HighFlight
      @HighFlight  Před 6 lety +1

      Great idea - you can also sit in the cockpits and have a 'guided tour' from one of the ex RAF Lightning pilots for just £5. One of the best £5 I've ever spent (on a previous event day). I learned then that I could never have been a Lightning pilot - I'm too tall, so either my head and a 'bone dome' would not have had room when the cockpit canopy was closed or in the event of an ejection my legs (or parts of them) would have been taken off on the way out for being too long. I'm only 6'1" (1.854m)!

    Is there a chance of these magnificent birds ever becoming air worthy again ?

  • @neilanyon4792

    We're they AVPIN starts or have starters been modified to cartridge? Seemed like a lot of dense smoke with a long burn and I didn't hear the sound of the pump (though that might have been drowned by the daft warning horn).

  • @lovelyfloorcoverings

    Is that the same lightning (XR718) that was in bits ?
    www.thunder-and-lightnings.co.uk/lightning/survivor.php?id=133

    • @HighFlight
      @HighFlight  Před 6 lety +1

      No, it's actually the ex RAF Leuchars gate guard, XR713. It now has a dual identity (since July 2017) - the left side depicts XR713 and the right side XR718 of 56 Squadron The RAF Firebirds aerobatic team. The aircraft is engineless and never likely to run again, although there are plans to reconnect wiring etc. so that the cockpit can be made as live as possible.

    Excellent vdeo. Best fighters of the era. But one small point - in your description, shouldn't it be AVM Collins, not AVM Marshall?!

    • @HighFlight
      @HighFlight  Před 6 lety

      Thankyou and also for spotting the error that I had not previously seen. Yes. it should be AVM Collins in the 2nd sentence, which I have corrected. Well done.

    • @HighFlight
      @HighFlight  Před 5 lety

      It's an 'optical illusion' - 3 airframes - one has 2 identities - the colours of XR713 on the left side and XR718 on the right.

    What a waste of ATF. Better to spend money on getting these beautiful machines over to a sensible country where they are allowed to fly.

    • @HighFlight
      @HighFlight  Před 6 lety +2

      Robert,
      I agree that it would be nice to see them flying anywhere, BUT - 1/. The ATF used is already 'waste' as it comes from stock that is no longer suitable for flight purposes at a vastly reduced price.2/. The only Country that has allowed Lightning's to fly on a civil register to date is South Africa, where they are no longer now flying following a tragic fatal accident, grounding of the fleet and subsequent unconnected and sad death of the owner/operator. 3/. There is a Lightning preservation group in the USA currently working towards getting an aircraft restored to flight in the USA. 4/. The cost of getting just 1 airframe to the USA or South Africa or elsewhere is beyond the pockets of most people. 5/. Better to see them living and working on the ground than static in a museum doing nothing.
      Steve.

      Well that one ‘sensible’ country that allowed someone to fly the lightning was South Africa, and that went really well didn’t it🙄🙄 the last thing the air show circuit needs is some idiot crashing a lightning like that prick at Shoreham.
