Altengrad is a time-progression Cities: Skylines series where I build a Central European city, located until 1989 in the Eastern Bloc, taking inspiration from Germany, Poland, Czechia, Slovakia and Hungary. The series starts around the year 1920 and slowly advances forward in time, which means the city will naturally evolve all the way to modern times. The city is not a recreation of any one real-life city or country, but it takes inspiration from them.
PC specs are in the channel's About page. No, the game doesn't run like this in real time. Cinematics are recorded slow and made faster in editing.

Altengrad is backkkkk!!!!!!!
Yessssssssssss
Man, I was hoping so bad!
yees
The best cities skylines series is back
F for the ancient bridge's ruins. Also, it'd be a fun idea for the the lore of the megalomaniac castle tunnel's delay (even if not that historically accurate) if it was partially caused by archeologists, historians and even former inhabitants of the slums pressuring the authorities after the ruins' removal incident (besides the lack of funds ofc)
I'm imagining that there was a plan for where the other end of the tunnel would surface, but because of protests, it got blocked. The political leaders then gave the orders to already start building the one side of the tunnel where they are agreeing, forcing the engineers to build a tunnel without knowing where they would build too. This too caused the entire project to land in some sort of hell limbo.
I can't imagine that communist authorities would listen to common people
@@trOlloloL48I mean the point of communism is listening to the common person
@@BlueKingNL. That's IDEALLY meant to be so; Funny thing that, though.
@@dragonbornexpress5650 yes that's the point of an ideology. it's in the name
the city from the viral image was Dusseldorf in west germany and the six-lane urban freeway was partially replaced with a Tunnel allowing construction of and a promenade as well as office buildings top.
currently the extention of the tunnel and further replacement of the urban freeway is being proposed
they arent following those plans for the near future, also it wasnt an urban freeway but a main road
And the worst thing about is, that idiots unironically think that that road has been closed down.
Not to mention that it wasn't an urban freeway either, just a main road, common in big cities.
I absolutely hate the green retards who attempt to sabotage big cities in becoming shitholes where it's extremely difficult to move around.
if im heading from dusseldorf airport back to cologne i have to drive like 15 minutes right throught the city. its horrible. sometimes i take the highway around even tho the trip is longer just because i feel so ineffecient going right into rush hour throught the city when i dont even want to go to the city :D
The city needs a stadium/sports complex, they were very common in the Eastern Bloc. Something like the Spodek Arena in Poland, or the Sportforum Hohenschönhausen in the DDR.
There's a few assets in the workshop like the Jahn Sportpark that could fit in very well in this city.
The tunnel in prague he was showing in this video goes right underneath the giant stadium in Prague. There's a huge stadium with several soccer fields inside and them a regular stadium right beside it.
There is just something so viscerally horrifying seeing Sv. Ludmila and a grade separated multi-lane highway right behind it. Planners from the 1960s are probably beaming though!
I believe the german City you are thinking about is Düsseldorf. The viral picture actually shows the replacement road that was constructed to divert traffic while the road tunnel was built using the cut and cover method underneath the old main road during the 90s
Isn’t that where Dr doofenshmirtz was from
@@LucasFernandez-fk8se no, Heinz is from Gimmelshtump. 😅😅
One of the most modern scenes in Altengrad. The ancient church next to the 1980s towers and highway interchange feels like a real city.
The towers You used "Manhattan" from Wrocław are placed next to a similar road. Also, they were part of the already mentioned in this series City in the Sky (or how Do You Call it) where pedestrians are separated from the road. A few years ago they were renovated and now they are shiny white color. But still i like the fact that in real live they are next to a bridge and main road and in Altengrad its almost the same. It feels like home
I love your history lessons almost as much as this city!
Yess altengrad!!
12:43 good luck trying to figure out which ones are there to cross the road lol
Ah, the famous "Sedesowce" buildings from Wrocław. It's good to see them here.
Great video!
What could be better than a new Akruas video? Only one thing: a new Akruas Altengrad video!
Though I don't know if it's the road you mean, the B51 in Cologne was "put underground" into the Rheinufertunnel which was opened in 1984. There is now a very nice urban/green area above it and there are even plans to expand the tunnel (Making it longer not adding more lanes, thank God), although those haven't gotten far yet.
I know that one too, but I think he meant the one in Düsseldorf, where there are now the Rheinterrassen and a tunnel below them. At least we even got that picture in our School Books as an example of urban infrastructure change.
The viral image is from Düsseldorf :)
god the destruction is terrible
keep it up, lane man would be proud
30:04 the city name ur looking for is Düsseldorf
So happy to see Altengrad develop again, this is easily the best Europe themed CS series on youtupe!
Altengrad is just beautiful, insanely realistic. Hands down! Every day with a new Altengrad vid is a good day! 🤩
Great video. For the city tunnel I suggest you get rid of the old terminus train station and the tracks leading to it, as it may have fallen out of use when the through-station opened. You will have all the place you need for the highway to go through the city center. Crossing the river doesn't seem realistic to me...
I agree with the crossing of the river but giving up the old terminal station would also be sad :-( better transform it to a new city district when a highspeed rail line will bypass the city and only stop at the east station :-)
No, and that's exactly the direction I said doesn't work anymore with the surface highway nearby. How is underwater tunnel not realistic?
@@Akruas I think an underwater tunnel is realistic, but I don’t know if a combination of a river and mountain tunnel exist. I used your map to build a city myself and would end the tunnel between the terminus station and the junction at the monastery island bridge (new tower side) because the terrain goes downhill there.
It's Altengraaaaad hurra!!!!
the king is back!
Absolutely stunning! Well done on the build and as always, thank you for the historical background. It is super interesting to hear about the philosophy/history of these structures or rather, of any of your builds. Excited for the next episode!
Can´t wait to see how the city changes in the 90s and 2000s. I guess there will be some gentrification, maybe some kind of modern skyscrapers and a few new residential areas for the new middle class.
Staromestská ulica-Hodzovo namestie go brrrr (hate that place irl but it looks super realistic here in altengrad)
Also this whole area even directly on the junction could be densified and urbanized (even in the 90s-00s like hodzovo namestie) so nicely omg am potential
The interchange is looking spectacular! Thank you also for all the historical context you bring up!
I have a suggestion for the tunnel. It could end up somewhere near the terminus train station and the bus station built in the 50s, (as by the 90s trucks have made the cargo terminal bit redundant, opening up space.) Where it could connect to the Monastery island bridge road and maybe even the road that goes over the weir to the newer plattenbau district across the river. + It would give "great" access for the IC busses to get to the highway system. Lore wise it could be part of a larger urban highway which was planned to go along the river/railway to the large industrial area and the old new built district further away. also giving people a faster way into and away from the center, and people across the river wouldn't have to drive all the way around on the highways or through the busy small streets in the center. And it was probably stopped before completion in a really awkward intersection by changes in the future of democratic and environmental reasoning. Which would give an opportunity to do some highway removal/turning to a nice avenue type project in the next century OR be completed as a modern urban highway also in the next century (like they're doing in Poland these days) :)
Yes that was the original idea, but like I said, the surface highway kinda does that direction-wise, tunnel would mostly just double that. The idea now is to take it all the way past the monastery island to the expo center, maaaybe with a side entrance at the zieleniak
I woud cover the part between the crasy intersection and the first bridge from the center with a park. of course sometimes in the 2000s.
19:49 imagine driving through that intersection..phew
OH YEAH! Altengrad!!!! I love this series!
What a crazy asphalt maze! I dunno if I'd like to drive into those highways and intersections... or live next to them.....
I was waiting for suuuch a long time for a proper highway build in Altengrad. Do you plan on making some sort of a Highway Ring around the city in the future????
Yes
That will be so cool@@Akruas
This is starting to look like Glasgow’s M8 motorway. What a magnificent hellscape
The most perfect and complete CS series is back! Hopefully it continues for eternity!
Great use and handling of terrain elevation difference, well done ! This can be an absolute nightmare to deal with but it seems you did great and the result is amazing
I MISSED THIS SERIES
The city you mention at about Minuten 30:00 is probably Düsseldorf.
yep, comparing 1990 condition to 2019 condition
Appreciate your attention to detail so much!!
Glad to see this series back again!
The viral image of the German urban Highway is from Düsseldorf :)
4:07 I didn't expected that you mention my city, it's so random lol
Great video!!! Really interesenting and entertaining. Congrats
It's Düsseldorf where they 'sunk' the riverside highway underground...
The city that you've mentioned at the end is probably gonna be Düsseldorf
I would love to see the city grow and connect in various places to the outskirts
Yes, I've been looking forward to this episode!❤
as far as I know, Paris did the same with some highway near Seine River, they also closed it and turned it into something else.
just my 2 cents. Great build you have here!
I sometimes try to recreate cities from real city maps or satellite imagery but it’s always good to see someone do it better for my own inspiration.
16:18 the ventilation towers look very efficient
Thank you for coming back to Altengrad
love this series!
Finaly. Most anticipated video on CZcams this year so far! :-)
I love this series so much
There's nothing stopping you from walking through the Bratislava tram tunnel. I was there last summer and walked through it. I wouldn't recommend it though. It was muddy and slippery.
Given I was expecting this on Friday, this is very exciting
the best CS series, by far!
That highway tunnels are awesome.
If you will made another ones in later years, you could check on Kralovopolský tunnel in Brno which construction started in mid 2000s.
Its important part of Brno infrastructure, and it was probably start of VMO(Large Urban Circuit) project.
I`d really love to see a custom flag, name and a bit of backstory of your fictive Country!
I love the towers at 26:06
Finally! ❤ love the road spaghetti you created here! I just wonder if the owner of the building plot opposite the church has some issues because it’s have been a building plot for ages already. 😊
just one more lane bro...
It's christmas again with an episode of Altengrad!
You should try not use circles in highways like the ones from create loop and create Connection tool the arrange at line and create curve make better looking and more realistic curves, i usually use the create curve and if its complicated i use the create Connection and the use arrange at line on the circular parts
And for making merges and exits i use the parallel road tool with the smaller road and create curve to it then merge the nodes and use the same offset in node controller as I used for the parallel road
It is my first time visiting your channel, this Altengrad reminded me of Bratislava
Amazing episode ❤
Thank the God! Akruas returned to Altengrad, It is the best serries on the channel.
european urban highways are usually cool because they adapt to and change with their surroundings
The best Cities Skylines is officially comeback from the break(I'm kotalyan from twitch)
love it as always
Düsseldorf is the city with that project you mentioned. 🙂
best series
👍
Wow, now that I think about it, I started watching you begin Altengrad series when I was in Highschool and now I am a freshman hahaha. Anyway, this reminds me of a Belgrade intersection called Mostar, you should check it out!
Awsome video as always ! I'm actualy very surprise that east europe didnt have many tunnels, because tunnels are a very european thing. In switzerland they have more than 1800 tunnels in activity, the same thing in France where i live. And even in Iceland who despite her poor roads number they have a dozen of tunnels in service. I wonder why there is such a difference between west and East Europe. Obviously it's because of the terrain, but there has to have an other explaination. Happy to see Altengrad Back even if i'm sad to see Asturis comming to an end.
For the picture you mean Düsseldorf, my hometown :)
you could "use" the nearby railway for carrying away the soil from the tunnel construction site
That was a really good episode! The German city you mean is Düsseldorf.
Altengrad let's goooo!
hey i realy love your videos becous i can learn somthing while whatching a video game
Love the videos :)
I call it a thumbs up!
The Tunnel @ 11:40, I drive through every day 😮
Top vid 👌
30:00 Düsseldorf, Rheinuferpromenade. :)
30:00 the German City you meant is Düsseldorf.
29:50 Rheinufer Tunnel, Düsseldorf. :)
So glad that altengrad is back!! Will we be getting more episodes ?
god this is the best
Oh god the intersection around 19:00 is truly disgusting... i love it 😅
LET'S GO!!!
I missed Altengrad A LOT
Btw... the german city mentioned at the end of video is Düsseldorf :-)
Dang i just forgot the 70s series
this guy infrastructures
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
It's absolutely disgusting and I love it
There is the opposite, like this tunnel : 50°50'47"N 15°34'58"E with cave appearance.
Love the series! BUT THE AGRICULTURAL FIELDS ARE TOO SMALL FOR SOVIET EUROPE
Hey there! It was nice to hear that u pronounced Hungarian names well! (except Pécs lol, but the other ones were good)
As you mentioned, the city is about to get into the 80s. It still doesn't have an airport tho'.. Do u have any plans to add one?
It's already in the 80's.
he said multiple times that he doesn't want to build an airport because its too tedious
When will there be an airport in Altengrad?
It seems you use a lot of mods and assets which is essential to build great cities like this. I've been playing CS for a long time, but lately I experienced weird issues: those few mods and assets I downloaded are randomly disappeared from the CS content manager, and from my Steam workshop subscriptions as well. This has happened several times. I wonder if anyone else is experiencing this problem? I know this is not a tech support, but Im really confused. 😕
Aren't you missing the left turn coming from the port ?
And how do you go to the port when you come from the bridge ?
No; up into the intersection and left, plus its almost like the rest of that highway network is not done yet.
