  • While we were filming our steel vs barrels challenge at Orston Shooting Ground we asked professional clay coach and top competitor Nick Hendrick if he could see how far he could smash a CCI eco-clay with an Eley Eco Wad Cartridge. Let's just say we started at 100 metres...

The shooter contradicts himself. He begins by saying there is no difference in the way you shoot with different cartridges, but is clearly amazed by how much lead it takes to hit a clay at these distances with steel shot. He begins by missing behind, but finally adjusts his lead forward until he is able the hit the targets at this distance. In addition, he remarks at how much more lead the shot requires as he moves back from 100 yards. This clearly indicates that the steel shot is slowing much more quickly at these distances than lead. This is exactly what velocity testing shows when using steel shot; if you start with a high velocity steel load, it preforms roughly the same as a slight lower velocity lead load out to 35 yards or so, but then starts to slow rather quickly. I have shot 28 gram steel loads of US number 7 shot at more conventional distances and they absolutely crush the targets. They crush your shoulder too, but that is because they start off at a higher velocity.

Much confusion between 'lead' and 'lead'.

A lot of people complaining about steel shot, but in reality most of us will be shooting within 60 yards 80/90% of the time and unless you’re an Olympic level shooter, your abilities will fail before the cartridge does.

Some great shooting what would be good is to see how far it will break a static clay … take out the emergent of the shooter and look at just the cartridge 👍🏼

I can say 7.5 lead will break a static clay at 150 yards, since I had set about a dozen clays on a berm to shoot with my 44 and my friend decided to be cheeky and fire off a 20 gauge at the berm and broke half my clays.

I've never met Nick, but I used to alter his stocks. Oh, BTW, don't forget that as well as lead, he had to aim above to allow for drop.

#7 steel according to the box at the beginning of the video. I had to go back and look at that myself, because I too missed it the first time I saw the video. 😊

But half choke using steel is the same as full choke with lead
