      Which is funny, since the MI in the films (the live-action ones) aren't the equivalent of battlesuit-wearing elites, but guardsmen with PDF-level loadouts. Barely protective plastic armor, tactical helmets with radios, autoguns, and atomic rockets for heavy weapon support.

      Starcraft too especially. I know Starcraft was said to have originally meant to have been a 40K game but the inspiration from Starship Troopers is also pretty evident, Power Armoured Terran (Terran Federation) The Protoss (Skinnies) and the Seudo Arachnids (Zerg). With that said 40K also takes inspiration from Starship Troopers with Space Marines and Tyranids so even with Starcraft having an inspiration from 40K it in many cases comes back full circle to Starship Troopers. The Dune series also lends heavy inspiration to 40K. Just fantastic universes all round that all bounce off one another.

      I have read the novel and watched/own the movie on DVD. I prefer the novel over the movie in general, I dislike the movie for some of the direction they took some of the characters for the sake of having a romance subplot with Rico and Diz for instance. The fact that they left out the suits which is why they were refered to as MOBILE infantry also sticks in my craw as it were.
      All that said, the movie is a great watch for the stars involved and the action. The plot is there and the acting is good as is character development for the most part. I just wish they had called it something else as it set expectations very high and failed to deliver for those of us who are fans of the novel

If you look at the ejection ports, they are elongated so that the selector switch from semi to full auto can be manipulated. Also the 20 round magazines also have some plastic on them to make them looked curved not straight. I'm assuming they didn't bother with iron sights on the carry handle in the movie because there is no point during filming and adds cost. It demonstrates that two civilizations, no matter how advanced; will inevitably come to blows if they lack the ability to communicate, cooperate, and commingle. Same problem when someone would do a 40k movie.
      They either tone it down or limit it to less storie oriented action of propaply marines vs xenos...
      Of course a movie on an inquisitorial mission, a former underhive inhabitant struggling to survive the service in the guard working him/herself up the ladder of ranks, a planet forgotten by the officials of the Imperium trying to withstand heritics (maybe someone is brave enough to adapt the back stories of the death korps)... There are countless possibilities but any of them wouldn't be honest to the source material unless it is either r-rated because the massive amounts of casualties, the brutality of higher ups and commissars and the horrors the xenos or chaos forces present couldn't be displayed otherwise... Or it needs a special kind of director to be able to convey that atmosphere of danger and cruelty with only subtle use of graphic images but making sure the bloody outcome is suggested.

      Some type of service guaranteeing citizenship would be a good idea if that was the ONLY way to guarantee citizenship, and citizenship could not be inherited. Historically, the problem is inequality - where people with wealth, power, etc. obtain citizenship through other means such as inheriting citizenship from your parents, paying a certain amount of money, etc as an alternative to service to the state. This is seen in ancient Athens, various times during the Roman Republic and Empire, etc and many modern nations. Even ancient Sparta had vast inequalities regarding this, because many people who served in the Spartan military never gained citizenship, and the Spartan citizenship process was only open to people of a certain lineage and ancestry and also who had enough money to "pay" for their agoge education & training program. In the end, all historical examples resulted in a system where those with wealth and power had a far easier way to gain citizenship and it was not a pure merit + service based system.

    The first Starship Troopers movie was great. I watched it already like 10 times or so in the last decades. Always fun to come back to that movie. It kind of feels like watching Imperial Guard vs Nids, well a bit at least.

    The plan of Sky Marshal Diens was a bloody one but was a necessary one. The bugs had already made the first strike through their plasma bugs so sending nuke armed kill teams to destroy their first strike capability had to happen, despite intel at the time. No one wants a second Klendathu, but no one wants a second Buenos Aires as well.

    I only know of this series from hearsay, and having caught a film of it a LONG time ago, can't remember which it was but essentially the base was infiltrated and overrun. I am looking forward to the Lord Inquisitor leading us across the reality boundary, and exploring this new and grim universe!

    • @alganhar1
      @alganhar1 Před 3 lety +3

      Yes, but the important part is the why. As the Major explains to Rico, the K9 and its handler are an extremely close knit team. If Rico was not willing to sneak his pet dog into his room as a kid he was not the kind of person they wanted as the human half of a K9 team. Don't forget, these dogs are NOT like your average pet dogs. These dogs have been genetically enhanced, they are as bright as a low IQ adult, they even have a language.
      Probably for the best really, as all the K9's essentially suicided on Klendathu.

    I remember liking Starship troopers the movie the first time I saw it. The sole reason for this is probably most unusually because in this instance I saw the movie before reading the book. It was a fun movie don't get me wrong but the differences between the movie and the book are so vast that the only thing they have in common is some of the locations and some of the terminology and names.
    Compared to the book, the movie is an empty thoughtless shell.
    Of course in the same way that sometimes you just want to eat at McDonald's, sometimes that sort of thing is what you just want to watch.
    Of course to be fair, if a virgin were made the were accurate to the book today it would probably literally be banned. It would pretty much have to be to prevent countless SJW's from having a heart attack resulting from extreme rage. The Ridiculousness of this is a topic for another time.
    The point is the two, the book and visual media, are so vastly different they hardly really count as the same franchise and I've always held Starship Troopers is the penultimate example of how vastly media productions can differ from Source material. I'm a bit puzzled, admittedly pre-watch, why does Channel chose not to go with the book instead of the movie. I don't question the quality of the video, not after having watched several of the 40k videos- it's the reasoning behind it that perplexes me.

    • @ZealotOfSteal
      @ZealotOfSteal Před 3 lety +2

      I'm also a bit baffled why Arch of all people didn't go with the book first.
      Considering how awesome the MI is in the novel and how the MI is undoubtedly the inspiration for super soldiers like the Spartans from Halo or the space marines of 40K.
      Also the director of the movie has said that he hadn't read the book and was trying to make a satire of fascism. Hence the 40s Hugo Boss looking uniforms of the intelligence core in the movie.

    • @alganhar1
      @alganhar1 Před 3 lety +1

      Agreed, really that is my entire issue with the SST video franchise, the fact it paraded as Heinleins Starship Troopers, and in fact had almost nothing in common with it. Had they come up with a different franchise, or kept only the name, without trying to pretend that it was a satire of Heinleins book and Facism (The book was a Libertarians wet dream ffs), then I think you would find that people such as myself, who read the book long before the film was released. Would not be bothered by it.
      Problem is they did, and in doing so shat all over what was arguably the first true Military Sci Fi book, written by a man who went on to be one of the aknowledged masters of Sci Fi.
      There is nothing really wrong with the movie except that. It is an enjoyable enough movie, but I cannot sit down and watch it because of that simple fact that it bastardised the Book completely, and left behind a false image of the book that is still present today.
