F 22 Raptor VS F 35 Lightning II - 5th Generation Fighter Jet Comparison

  • F-22 and F-35 are the most ambitious fighter programs in the Western world to have produced aircraft ready for combat, although the F-35 is currently restricted to a limited initial operating capability and is not yet ready for medium or high intensity engagements.
    The F-22 uses a much higher end more costly airframe, but has suffered from a difficulty incorporating upgrades and very high maintenance issues which along with its low production run mean it is likely to be retired from service decades ahead of the lower maintenance but more modern F-35 or even the old F-15. The F-22 and F-35 are set to continue to define the fifth generation for many years to come.

    What is crazy to realize is that the F-22 was built and designed in the 1970s and 1980s.. back when almost everything publicly speaking, was analog and in kbits... yet the F-22 has technology integrated into it that far exceeds anything on the public market today and can still out-perform any other bird in the air.. keeping in mind the exponential technology curve.. what has the US Government designed and developed in the last 30-40 years? The F-22 is a 5-gen fighter from almost 40 years ago.. I imagine the US Government has generations and generations of designs and aircraft that have yet to be declassified that will 'roll out' down the line, as out adversaries 'catch up' (LOL). . . My hot take is that 'UFOs' that seemingly break the laws of physics (from an observers standpoint) are simply glimpses of what the US Government has.

      the F-15A/B was designed and built in the 70s. First delivered in 1976 with the C/D models arriving in '79. F-22 was still a ways off yet. First "Stealth" attempt, code named "Have Blue" was the F-117. Not actually an "F" fighter but an "A" attack aircraft. Soft landings

      The design criteria wasn't even released until 1985.
      Zero design work on smooth stealth aircraft was done on the 70's. In the 70's we were still struggling to create the have blue/hopeless diamond (f-117).
      It was secret for about half a decade so the whole "they have operational aircraft decades ahead of anything we know" is just BS.
      They can't expect the companies that designed and manufacture the plane to make a great plane and then tell them yes we want 50 of them but hold that thought for a decade or two. Don't throw away the molds or fire any of the people, just tread water for a few years.
      The problem with super secret airplanes is using them kills the whole secret part.

      Most military hardware and especially planes are built these days using a modular design. This means systems can be easily upgraded as improvements come along, similar to upgrading the RAM or GPU on your PC. The plane itself my be decades old since conception but I very much doubt the systems are more than a few years old if that.

One will chase you down and shoot you out of the sky with pinpoint precision, and the other will have already fired the missile that blew you out of the sky before you even knew it was there. F22 is designed to protect airspace by enforcing air superiority. F35 is designed to be a bench player that uses floor time to occupy the enemy when the home team has an advantage.
    When the allies can protect themselves, you can spend more money on developing new weapon systems.
    Update: There are so many updates to the F-35 that the new weapons make it decent against anything else. Even though it's slower than almost every other fighter, the mesh-network alongside stealth that there is almost no nation that can compete beyond visual range (assuming there are no advanced dection systems nearby. • @rbrtck
      @rbrtck Před rokem +6

      @@nathanc30 The F-35 is a VLO stealth fighter with advanced sensors and sensor fusion, so I don't see why it couldn't perform the SEAD/DEAD role at least as well as the F-16. Why is the F-16 so good at it? Probably in part because of its relatively small frontal RCS, but the F-35 beats it easily in this respect.
      As for air-to-air combat, the F-35 wasn't really designed for that, but except for its limited internal capacity for air-to-air missiles (4xAIM-120D), it is capable of dominating in the air superiority role because it possesses the most critical capabilities that the F-22 uses to dominate. The F-22 is the more complete air superiority/dominance/supremacy fighter, no question, but the F-35 can also dominate over everything else.
      In a close-in dogfight, the F-16 has some advantages over the F-35 in terms of power and agility, and mainly the fact that it carries 2xAIM-9X HOBS missiles. The F-35 has two rails for this missile, but they are external, and therefore can't be used while in stealth mode. However, the F-35 still gets first look, first shot, and probably first kill. Its pilot can set up for the advantage even if it comes down to a WVR fight, and that will most likely get him the win.

    • @rbrtck
      @rbrtck Před rokem

      @@braticuss Or the F-15EX, for that matter. However, much depends on the rules of engagement. @boddaboom77 Před rokem

      It's possible, but unlikely. A lot of missiles need an airframe to launch from or it loses range from having to burn so much fuel to get aloft. The electronics packages on the F35 are invaluable now as well. We see what has happened with Russia not being able to secure the skies over the battle space and they're getting bloodied pretty good by a much smaller force. Air defense from both sides has made it nearly impossible to do anything other than launch a few rockets or cruise missiles from way behind the front and hope they get through the missile defenses of the opponent. EW and stealth tech possessed by the US would have a better go of it, but there would undoubtedly still be losses. That's the biggest downside from a western POV. These aircraft are just so expensive that it would take some serious calculations to decide to put them at serious risk to fly missions over the battle space.

You have to design the jet to fit him ( extra cost2 ) and his biological needs + you need a base to house this pilot. Everyone always says how much better the f22s is. For starters the f22s was developed a long time ago which in itself is amazing but makes its tech more known and its an air to air superiority fighter, with the f35 new and still being modified and tested even though some are being tested its far from being done development. And the f35 is a multi role stealth bomber, interceptor, fighter, missile defense, air to ground, electronic warfare, tactical nuclear weapons, short take off and landing, or vtol or conventional take off and landing, also it can be modifed from a 5th gen stealth strike aircraft and used in the begging of a war and once air superiority is won then it can be turned in to a 4th gen style aircraft using its hardpoints increasing its weapon load a hell of alot. Let alone the f35 was specifically built to fit all roles and to be operated and be easy to share real time tactical information to each f35 operated by different allies including updates problems so on. And last the f35 is highly classified where the f22 still is but has been used so much theres alot of information about it. But due to any multi role aircraft its not gonna be the beat the best of best in the best of the bests specific type of fighting. But it being a 5th gen multi role stealth bomber fighter its on par with most 4th gen aircrafts weather fighters strategic bombers interceptors electronic warfare missile defense so on. Its the master aircraft but master of none.

    The F-35 has a flaw in its tail design meaning it can only be supersonic for 2 minutes and 30 seconds per sortie. Otherwise the tail literally gets ripped off by the stress.

    But gotta admit for the public to hear and see or the airforce to fly theres nothing better than a twin engine aircraft. But with the f35 its so versatile it can be used in any mission down to cia black ops navy seals to air force to maritame patrol to norad to bombing missions stealth or non, nuclear strikes, missile defense, air to air air to ground missiles, electronic warfare, micro wave weapons and future lasers, if the f35 becomes able to do even half of what its promised this aircraft will be studied around the world as a changing in aviation and be flown by countries for decades upon decades upon decades because itll never run out of uses and since its a fifth gen even once 6th 7th 8th gen aircraft come out itll still be capable let alone versatile. Unlike the f104 starfighter which was built was a fast interceptor then used as a low flying deep nuclear strike aircraft mainly and sometimes air to air even though it was insanely fast and built closer to a missile than an aircraft which is why it was nicknamed the widow maker flying coffin etc. Because they took an aircraft meant for one role and used it for a completely different role. Where the f35 wont have that problem. It wont eliminate the need for speciality aircrafts but once most of our trusted allies are flying f35s and the f35 is dueing everything its suppose to operating in tandum by multiple nations itll be unstoppable almost. Let alone with a small amount of backup from drones, super fast air to air fighters, ground systems, heavy bombers and so on.
