I was there in Subic when it erupted. All the clear pictures of the ash cloud where actually from a few days before. That ash cloud gave a light dusting of everything around Subic. The main eruption could not be seen well because there was a Cyclone over the area at the same time as the main eruption. The ash came down like wet beach sand, blocked out the afternoon light 100% and caused small lightning bolts every few seconds. The only way my buddy and I could see to make our way up to Cloud city to our barracks was to wait for the lightning. You could just make out what was about 15 feet in front of you. The giant trees where falling under the weight of the wet ash and falling around us. Fun times.

I loved being stationed at Clark Ab. I spent three of the best years of my life there from 1988-1991. I was there for several Typhoons including super typhoon Dan, the Earthquake where I did search and rescue and then search and recovery, military member assassinations, and lastly the volcano eruption. I wish I could have stayed there longer instead of being sent to the Sandbox instead and then stateside. The Philippines is a beautiful country filled with wonderful people!
I have never been to the Philippines, but one of my closest friends in high school was Filipino.
The volcanologists, Local and US, got it right this time and evacuated about 150,000 people before it struck, as well as the Clark Staff. Well done volcanologists.

The sound of the Pinatubo eruption had to be heard in other parts of the world, I can imagine how shocking the eruption was.
I have never heard a volcano erupt in person; I suspect I probably wouldn't want to due to the dangerous consequences of being close enough to hear one.

What a ride that day was... Typhoon hitting plus that dam volcano.. I was working the Jet Shop in Cubi Point and it took quite a while to get home out in Olongapo. Took days to clear all that ash.. Wife got evacuated to the States because of that dam thing

It’s funny cause I actually use this event to try to express “you never know, prep for the worst” situation for my kids. 89’ we lived in Camp John Hay, Baggio City. Due to a family members medical issues we transferred to Clarke Airbase. Prior to pinatubo eruption, like some military and family members we were evacuated to Subic Bay. We were placed on Grande Island, which was a disaster in the waiting. After watching pinatubo erupt and the ash filled subic bay, it took everyone days to be able to get to grande island to get us evacuated. Which then we went from subic bay to being transported to the Abraham Lincoln carrier group. Which was diverted from the Persian Gulf War. Then transported to Guam.

Good video but factually inaccurate at 2:37. The U.S. Military DID NOT abandon Clark and Subic after the eruption. Although the U.S. Military evacuated before the eruption on 06/15/91 (with a small security force staying behind), the U.S. Military intended to stay and rebuild the installations which were heavily damaged and partially destroyed as a direct result of Mount Pinatubo. The previously agreed upon Military Bases Agreement was set to expire on 09/16/91. On 08/27/91, President Corazon Aquino signed the RP-US Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation, and Security with the United States. This agreement would have extended the base leases for 10 more years and provide a compensation package of $203M each year. This number does not account for the added economic stimulus of thousands of U.S. Military and dependents living and spending money in the Philippines as well as employing over 80,000 Filipinos on the bases. On the same day the Military Bases Agreement was set to expire (09/16/91), the Philippine Senate voted AGAINST the treaty. On 11/24/92, the last U.S. Navy ship sailed out of Subic Bay ending a century of U.S. Military presence in the Republic of the Philippines. In the end, the U.S. Military wanted to stay, the Philippine Senate wanted them gone. And now, over 30 years later, it’s hard to believe that China would be setting up shop in the South China Sea if the US Military were still present in the Philippines.

My mom was at home at that time. I think there was a Earthquake when she was at school.

I was 3 y/o when she erupted. And i remember my aunt telling me stories of how in Manila the noon skies turned to midnight and everything was caked in foul smelling ash. And then it rained.
Personally I wish I was there to witness it. I have already missed Taal's last three eruptions and Mayon's current eruption. Bucket list, you might say.

I was 8 then.. when it erupts. I'm from Pampanga. I remember that the day turn into night. And the group shakes every minute,, we were shock its totally new for us. Rock began to fall as big as tennis ball. Can't imagine that how did Pinatubo throw those rock to us... Lightning everywhere people are crying praying. As a kid I was excited on what is happening.. maybe bec of a raging hormones inside me.. I remember that I was hugging my dog then.. it's one of kind expirience. Until now I tell my kids the story of that. It's really a amazing expirience. Hope it will not happend again in our lifetime..

Mount Pinatubo when it erupted, & Hurricane was right over the island of Luzon. The Hurricane was absolutely obliterated & the shock wave from the eruption blew the storm apart. It took out a huge chunk of the Hurricane & disrupted the weather patterns too.

I don't think many people truly understand how astronomical of an eruption Pinatubo produced. Sure, it wasn't a supereruption, but we're still talking about 10 cubic kilometers of ash being ejected into the atmosphere. Utterly insane that we actually have video footage of this.

Ahh the lung destroying grey snow. No classes for more than a month during that time 😅 But hella lot of cleaning to do after specially when that big storm came right after the eruption 😩 I remember my mom yelling at my 2 brothers and I telling us to be a man and go up on the roof to clean everything up 😩 specially around the gutters 😩 I was just 11 back then and my 9yr old and 6yr brothers had to climb up with me on the roof and clean up 😭 Our Dad was a thousand miles away working as a Cargo Ship captain and was worried sick because he can't contact us since all the phone lines were down for weeks.

So either that or another super earthquake 🫨 If it's a tsunami, I'm pretty safe where I am right now unless it's a 6 kilometer tall tsunami then I doubt anywhere is safe if that happened 😂

I was on the USS Nimitz when it blow up. I was in Vf 213 tarps Squadron. They crossed deck me at the time. From VF 211 bad mistake at that time for me. If I stay in Vf 211 I could have made chief.
People that have not lived on a ship have no idea what it is like. Quite an experience. In port they seem SO BIG, but in rough weather at sea, not so much.

In what role did you serve? My grandfathers were each Korean War veterans (one in the Navy and the other in the Air Force).

It's a mystery as to why, as someone who lives in the Philippines can attest, we love creating the best resorts and houses around these mountains. Tagaytay for instance which is around Taal volcano, has among the most expensive real estate in the Philippines. That's despite the fact that Taal's largest eruption from 3,000 years ago is estimated to have been 10x stronger than Pinatubo. So far, Taal eruptions have been "subdued" with explosions maxing out at VEI 4. But imagine if it were to explode like it did pre-Spanish era with a VEI 7 rating, then it would be terrifying, considering how populated the region is.

@@HistoryandHeadlines - If we are talking about political figures who have had quite a significant impact outside of the Philippines, then the common pick would be Jose Rizal, the Philippines' national hero, who was a polymath (physician, academic, artist, writer etc.) whose writings have been recognized abroad, particularly the ones that exposed the darker side of Western Colonialism. However, he wasn't anti-West, and was still open to recognizing and adopting the strengths of Western Culture. Rizal has monuments in other countries, such as the US, Spain, Germany, and Singapore among others.
The other political figure with a Global impact is Manuel Quezon, president during the Philippine Commonwealth era who was known for allowing Jews fleeing Japan to take asylum in the Philippines after Japan had joined the Axis powers with Germany and Italy. Many of those Jews remained in the Philippines until those families were able to relocate to Israel in the years after 1948.

Man I was 12 and I can recall everything like it was yesterday even the earthquake that woke pinatubo up, I was literally watching waves like the ocean in the streets of Clarke airbase.

The U.S. Armed Forces did not "abandon" the bases. The Philippine government did not want to renew the leases for these bases. They voted not to renew the leases to regain their sovereignty. Other than this misstep the video was accurate. I know I was there.

When I wrote "abandoned" I did not mean to imply some sort of desertion or hasty retreat. Perhaps wrong word choice. The PI, in my opinion, made a major mistake in not renewing the leases and keeping the massive economic and security impact of the US bases.

It’s not impressive because the truth its not an eruption but rather it’s an explosion…US and Philippines separated at that time and US didn’t like it after PH kick them out in their country…imagine the owner kick you out from your house even though you didn’t miss a single mortgage payment and how would you react to it? Keep in mind US helped PH for decades and they felt back stabbed during early 90s after their separation…US retaliated big time with that kind of explosion and until today…there’s no way PH can prove and justify they did it

We only abandoned Clark Air Force base. The Philippines Senate refused to renew our lease for the Naval Base. We did not abandon it.

@@yunnayun9367 nah, the Philippine Senate at the time was under CCP's payroll. their "investment" have paid off since they've pretty much build all the military base they want in SCS. imagine the presence of one of the biggest US military base outside of US territory (both Clark airbase and Subic naval base) would have done to CCP's decision to expand in SCS. they'd be less inclined to feel free building to their hearts content any military installation over there.

@@HistoryandHeadlines While I don’t pretend to know the actual inner workings and going ons behind closed doors, their outward actions do seem to convey they try keeping peace. I’m not one of these ‘get out of the UN right wingers’, but do sometimes believe the USA does most of the heavy lifting and provide the serious money. My original statement was aimed at these climate nuts in general, again I’m not against saving the world, but I think for the most part global warming is a money grab scam aimed to control.

Each places has its vulcano hiding or sleeping like what we have here in negross occidental. Mount canlaon is a sleeping giant vulacano..
Hope if it will someday.. we are prepared for that to come.
