Jason's 3-day Exclusive with the Cybertruck - The Carmudgeon Show Cammisa & Derek Tam-Scott - Ep 122

  • The Cybertruck is easily the most controversial vehicle of the last decade, and Tesla gave Jason Cammisa exclusive access to its engineers - to drive it, watch it in a crash-test, drag race it, race it around a go-kart track, and hit it with a sledgehammer.
This is a companion podcast to the "Jason Cammisa on the ICONS" episode, available on the Hagerty CZcams channel: • Exclusive 2024 Tesla C...

As mentioned in the podcast, see the original Car and Driver road test of the 1987 Lamborghini LM002 here: www.caranddriv...
The Cybertruck has finally launched, 4 years after its shape was revealed to the public. What we didn't know in the intervening years was that the shape was the least outrageous part of Tesla's truck.
Underneath the structural stainless-steel skin is an entirely-new method of constructing vehicle, with enormous aluminum castings and a structural battery pack made of Gen-2 4860 cells developed by Tesla. The Truck uses a new 800-volt battery and motor architecture with a switch to run the battery modules in series/parallel hybrid mode for 400-volt backwards compatibility.
The 12v low-voltage system has been replaced by an industry-first 48-volt architecture, together with a new electrical architecture and gigabit CAN.
And the Cybertruck is the world's fully steer-by-wire vehicle - using nothing but electric motors to turn both the front and rear wheels.
In addition, this 3-motor variant pulls off consistent 2.6-second 0-to-60 runs and manages 11.0 @ 119 mph through the quarter-mile, a production truck world record (by some margin - beating the previous record holder, the Rivian R1T Quad-Motor through the 1/4-mile by 0.7 seconds.)
This podcast is Jason Unfiltered, talking about his experience with the Cybertruck to film the ICONS episode.
The Carmudgeon Show is part of the Hagerty Podcast Network.

The absolute meltdown happening on Reddit on the cars sub (and to a lesser extent on IG) because Jason had the audacity to not thrash the Cybertruck, and even worse like it, has been incredible to watch. Essentially calling him a paid shill and attacking his credentials as a journalist for not seeing it the way some on that sub do. I've never seen anything like that kind of extremely negative unhinged backlash before. And I can only assume this is mostly because of Elon rather than the truck itself.

What a great way to end my week. Two Carmudgeon episodes in five days. Amazing.
Getting rid of fuses is long overdue. The 787 uses an electrical architecture that utilizes remote power distribution units. This allows you to have virtual circuit breakers, which are monitored. You can select from a (long) list of breakers that you can "pull' to deactivate or remove power from various systems. The system also tells you if a "breaker" was tripped or pulled. There are some traditional thermal physical breakers, but the majority of electrical system protection is fully electronic. It's cool tech, for sure.

      @stacybehrens7152 Před 9 měsíci

@@rogerstarkey5390 The prices for the CT aren’t wildly out of line with the competition. Point is that to overlook the points in the negative column for me personally (styling, won’t fit in my garage, etc) it would have to be cheaper. Plus Elon unsurprisingly lied about pricing… again. Some accountability would be nice.
At similar price points I prefer the Rivian. Others might feel differently. This isn’t an anti Tesla thing. I own and am happy with a FSD Model S. The Rivian simply fits my tastes better, is a better size for me, and is functionally equivalent.
The reason the opposition is losing money on each vehicle is the same reason Tesla did until they achieved sufficient scale. Big fixed costs of production and engineering that need to be amortized over every vehicle. Most of the competition (except maybe Rivian and/or Lucid) is pretty behind the curve on engineering.

Tesla is the only car company out there that manages to integrate cutting edge engineering with cutting edge software. Others aren't even remotely close to that complete package. All who say that "the competition is coming" have no clue about engineering or the software aspect of cars. The software side is just as impressive as the Cybertruck engineering. They are literally a decade ahead with the seamless integration of everything. I reeeally hope they make a sedan next with what they learned making the Cybertruck. I'd instantly buy a Cyber M3.

I don’t know if they’re comparable, because they don’t really try to do the same thing. Jason (nowadays) is primarily focused on drilling down on engineering and history, the story of the product in question and the people involved. Marques is focused on the average consumer in nearly all of his content rather than enthusiasts, be that cars or tech in general. They have very different audiences, and a different set of goals in content creation because of it.

@@puddud4 I don't agree, because I think Marques does the same basic thing with his other tech reviews. He doesn't do deep dives, he focuses on the company's headline claims about product X and the relevant (to the general public) figures for comparison's sake. The things he knows most people tend to look at when shopping, which he packages with fantastic presentation. He goes deeper than that at times when there's a reason, but in general that's it.
The biggest difference I see is that his car reviews don't have the same focus on presentation, they're much more simple and straightforward. I absolutely agree that Jason has the best review on this, clearly. I just don't think Marques is really doing anything particularly wrong given his audience.

The technical and in-depth analysis was unexpectedly captivating. The way you delved into the mechanics, the performance nuances, and even the historical context of the car was truly impressive. You've got a knack for making even the most intricate details sound fascinating. I found myself completely engrossed, and before I knew it, the 80 minutes had flown by. I have been telling people for YEARS that Tesla was not just going to bleep out the Cybertruck, it is the biggest development and innovation effort by far that Tesla has made. Just to get the structural battery pack required developing the 4680 cells, which meant inventing tabless cells and buying a company for the dry battery technology and then iterating the crap out of dry battery technology and on and on, and then the gigacastings and the new alloy for those, the new steel alloy, the drive by wire, the 48 volt tech, etc. It was literally seven years of work so far just on the battery cells, they are not going to do all of that and then say "whatever" about the rest.
Yes, it does not overheat and slow down because tabless battery cells do not heat up like battery cells with tabs do, and they can put out more power than your battery with the tab can, and they can recharge faster, and oh yeah, because the heat is a big factor in battery degradation, the battery pack will last a lot longer too, and supercharging will not be a problem.
No other company would even dream of attempting to develop a new product with this level of large innovations on many fronts at one time. Very few would even try to achieve one innovation of the level that Tesla has a good dozen of in the Cybertruck.

Being around all kinds with my background I can tell you that while this truck is going to sell to people for its image it's also going to sell to people for its features. There's a lot of buyers out there who don't look at vehicles as throw away commodities and want them to last as long as possible for as little money as possible. This is a truck that can do almost all light to medium duty tasks better than a "standard" truck while being resistant to idiot damage (be that by the driver or jerks in the public) while being long lasting in all aspects.
Drivetrain system failures will be much lower.
Maintenance will be a laughable fraction of the cost of a "standard" truck or even many SUVs or cars.
For northern states there won't be a constant heart-breaking battle to keep rust off the thing.
No dings or dents from minor incidents.
Great ride and handling regardless of load.
    Nearly unmatched dry storage.
It will keep getting new useful features and improvements through updates.
This is a list that could be so much longer, but the point is that this is a product a lot of people have been waiting for. I and a lot of others look at a vehicle as a tool, and you'd have a hell of a time selling us a less useful hammer because it's "objectively" prettier than the better hammer. In a world where every car looks like a potato with some lines thrown on it the looks are going to have little meaning to a lot of buyers. Many want it just because it looks different at all.
