  • This video I go over the foundations of understanding the Matrix back take, as well as show my favorite way for setting it up. I show set ups from X Guard, Omoplata, Cross Guard, and the Key Master. in addition I have a lot of sparring footage to demonstrate how to actually use these techniques in sparring. Comment and let m know if you have any questions or requests.

That's what I was thinking. I'm trying to figure out why you would do a K guard style backtake if you can just do this. Maybe it's just that you have more options to a attack the legs with a k guard type of entry. Duno

I’ve been attacking it from Choi bar or legs on back position when my opponent postures. It’s a nice series of movements because the top/outside leg just consistently comes over the top, then I shift my hips square to the floor, turn my hips and throw the top leg over, shift hips square, etc etc

    Tip to everybody watching this.
Watch this video 5 minutes at a time. Watch the first 5 minutes, then drill and try and repeat everything you learned to your coach or training partner.
Watch the 5 minutes again, if you realized you forgot to share something with your training partner, repeat the process. If you did not forget anything, move to the next 5 minutes.
Complete this process until you can explain nearly every single thing in this video to a partner.
This is a very disciplined form of study, and it takes a long time, however it will enhance your knowledge of the position and you will grow your training partners as well. Trust me, well worth it.

That’s great advice! Videos like this are meant to be constantly referenced to as a guide to learn the position, not necessarily for people to watch in 1 shot but of course I’m happy if they do. You are right though it’s good to learn play with it in the mat and go back and learn again.

It would be really intresting to see the nogi one, where you end up in 50/50 and compare those two
    Great vid :)

I’ve recently fallen in love with deep de la Riva which I use to gain access to the back. I don’t know the matrix or K guard, but we have a brown belt that has tried to show me these moves.
