I just graduated in May, 3 years sober and now I am an MD which never would have happened had I not gone through those tough times. The crux of the problem within our culture is that we do not have a 'Rite of Passage' tradition like many cultures do/had. Native Americans had vision quests, jewsih culture has Bamitzva, The closest thing we have is graduating college which is utterely insufficient. Overcoming adversity, trials and tribulations is what encourages maturation in men. Thanks to the lack of war and hedonism of the Boomers (no offense) we have a bunch of overgrown children running amuck, hence the complete disintegration and collapse of civilizaion in real time. I actually have much hope in our generation. Sure, there are tons of idiots in my demographic as well but as the realization of our decline starts to set in, I see renewed vigor and passion sparking in the younger people. Ironically, the very circumstances we regarded as favorable are the same ones that are to be OUR trials and tribulations.
