  • After a 25-year absence from the drag strip, I finally brought my record setting historical gasser out of the garage and took it to the drag strip again. The car needs to be gone through with some major tuning and eliminating any faulty parts but, the car did well, stayed together and we had fun running the car again! I will keep after it this time instead of stuffing it back in the garage for another 25 years. The car is a historical piece and needs to get back to its record setting E/Gas times of ET and MPH of 12.71 at 110.56. That will be the new goal with the car! This has been a fun journey and there is more to come with this one! Thanks for watching!

    Wow, that still shot AT 3:44 shows the chrome reverse wheels and possibly the white body paint we see today! It's so cool that you are using it for the reason it was built.

      Yes, it has been nothing short of a rolling museum! I am finally getting her back to the original seamist green paint like in the photo taken at Indy for the '63 Nationals seen at 3:44. And those are the very same chrome reverse wheels that were on Ted Radoumis '55 that I have today! Hopefully, I will have it back out soon! Thanks for watching and I hope the '57 builds are going well! Take care!

      For sure Andy! Ary was a big help and he really got baptized there seeing all the cars at his first drag race! It was great to collaborate with him and he did some amazing videos on his channel with my car and the event! He probably has much more material to put out there from Saturday, that's for sure! I totally recommend doing collab work as we are a small community and many of us know the other channels. It was great seeing Chaz on the last night with BW! Ary will definatly have some upcoming content with the Apache and the Dart. His Sunday night Live's have been great! Take care!

We met all of our goals for this event and the next task is to start working on tuning it and getting it back to its record setting pace! Thank you for being there for each video and enjoying the car like have in getting it back out there again! We have more plans down the road! Thanks again for watching and take care!

      Thank you Dennis! I hope you are doing well and getting better! The video was a tough one with all of the cameras to manage, not knowing the new GoPro real well (it only recorded that last run!) and having a camera that I've now retired because it has focus issues as you saw! Also, what a pain in the azz it is to download a FB video that I had been given permission to use! I will never do that again! Anyway, the car needs some real tuning, rule out some potential bad parts and a good full day of test and tune at the track. I tell you, the 1/8th was way different!

      The GoPro caught me by surprise too! It is taking awhile to learn it as there aren't much for instructions, just trial and error. I had ticked off the starter on a couple of occasions not on pourpose but, I was not going to stage the car on that third run until I got the GoPro turned on. Hoss had no problem with waiting as he had driven the '56 to the track. The results of waiting for it to turn on were awesome! Thanks for watching and glad you enjoyed it!

Just remember, there are no goofballs at MoonEyes...everyone does their own thing and the drags have always been the one place where everyone fits in or gets along! Big Willie and the Brotherhood of Street Racers always nailed that into every racer when we ran at his Terminal Island dragstrip. I just wished we had some of those drag strips back! Take care and talk to you soon!

    Grew up in Pacifica CA . Pops use to rebuild clutches in SF . We went to HMB drag strip when I was a kid .Probably saw the 55 when I was 5 !! I remember walking to school past the High School and there was a orange 55 ..Radiused , Black steelies Pie Cutters , Skinny ansens in front and the 4 point roll bar , Fender well headers . Now the Kicker .. Stock front A-Arms ..I Know its not the Hersfeld car but its a time capsule ..Thanks for the vids !!!

      Awesome memories!!! I know the bakery in Half Moon Bay was to have had pictures of this car, as well as many other who ran at HMB, hanging on the wall there at the bakery. The owner sold but, he was supposed to have kept all the pictures on the walls. Hopefully, they are still there! I know there was an Orange '55, like the one you mentioned, that had a Pontiac in it. I'm not sure if it ran in Calif. but, it is being restored now. Thanks for watching and sharing the great memories! Take care!

      Thank you for the good words! The short block in my car is a total unknown. Ted Radoumis, one of the original team drivers of the 3 cars, had given me this short block from an old Willys he had purchased. Ted, my Dad and I put it back together with an Ultradyne Cam in it and the valves were hitting the pistons! We took it back apart and Ted notched the pistons and all was fine. I hope to go back and build a correct short block that is as high winding as this car was back in the day! I also need to work on my shifting and keeping the hammer down whlie shifting! All fun stuff! I would love to get out someday and see a SEGA Event someday! Thanks for watching!

The shortblock was given to me from one of the original team drivers and it came out of a Willys truck he had bought. It is totally unknown so, I may go back and build a correct engine for it too. I need to get it back to its record setting times. We'll see how it goes. There were some real serious cars out there and just a few of us who had original cars from the day. Can't believe you're motor mounts can stand that without the mounts on the bellhousing

    • @hubiesgarage
      @hubiesgarage  Před rokem

      No, it has the '55-'57 Chevy specific dog eared bellhousing. It uses the stock std. transmission side motor mounts as well as a transmission crossmember too. This was common back in the day. Those stock metal and rubber side motor mounts for the standard trans did come apart after heavy use so, the guys would run a bolt through the rubber portion of the mount to make them stronger and keep them from separating.

      Thank you Big Block Kings! It has a lot left in it and I really need to take it to an all day test and tune where you can get into the zone tuning and not performing to packed grandstands! It was the biggest crowd I'd ever driven in front of! With 1/4 mile conversions in the low 14's, the car was waay off as it had run two 13.50's and a 13.20 back when I ran it in '97. The record the car had set in '63 was 12.71 at 110.56 mph so, I have a target to aim for. The pie crusts definatly were not as good as the wrinkle wall M&H Racemasters I have but, those are done. All considered, it stayed together, ran decent and we had lots of fun! Thanks for watching and following along! Take care!

    Hey, I like the way you are shaking the car down, she's a girl from the past, so you have to figure it out, just like they did in the day. The Hilborne injection is going to be at times a exercise in frustration as I have learned on my 55, it's inherent... love seeing the time slip, that way we all can see you improvement with the car, and you will improve substantially like for example, Bruce's obsession, he has the car wired but that takes time...
    As for a manual car on the Track at the Irwindale 1/8, the starting line is way out of level, I thought they had corrected this but I guess not, it's over stage city and from my experience on that track, I'm not putting down Irwindale Raceway but that's a fact, your out of the hole times will not be where you want to be without a line lock on you steering wheel or your shift stick.
    Great to see your 55 out there!
    I could not make it as other priorities were on the front burner...
    Having more than one camera out there is a great idea, I liked the different angles!
    Keep the car as original as you can, people love it....

      @hubiesgarage  Před rokem +1

      Gary, I really have to give you all the credit for the reason why I was out there this past Saturday! You really fired me up about Nitro Revival and how close we were to having our cars ready! As I was talking with you about a last ditch effort for you and I to take our '55's to Nitro Revival, I was online ordering parts. I figured I needed to have the car ready in case another event came up and I needed to be better ready to run for the next one. About 3 weeks prior, I had accumulated the parts and asked about going to MoonEyes. I didn't hear a solid answer from the guys but, I got the car ready and showed the progress on my youtube channel. As I got closer and finally got a tech card to run, it was apparent I was "all in" to run!
      The channel has been great for me as it has kept me honest, motivates me and pushes me to get stuff done! I have made greater progress with my cars because of the channel and the fan encouragement...it helps! Auggie, Nate and I saw each other and talked about missing you at the event. We are "all in" to help and would love to see your timecapsule out there too! Your '55 is like a 10 year later version of mine and will probably run well! After losing my two Hilborn guys, I bought a well written book on Hilborns and figured It's time to be my own expert on them so, that starts now. After this event, the best thing for me now is to go to an all day test n tune at Barona or even drive up to Bakersfield to really dive into tuning the car without the big event or crowds. Just go out, sort the car out and go to these big events after the car is more dialed in. We need to probably grab the guys, take both cars and go. Let me know! I have enjoyed being over at the shop with you guys and tinkering with the car! Hopefully, we can get these cars back in competitive form again! Take care bud and look forward to seeing you back out soon!

    Hey, Jeff. Just wondering about your technique for leaving the line and what rpm you shift at. Also, what's your flywheel and clutch set-up?

    • @hubiesgarage
      @hubiesgarage  Před rokem

      Good questions! The starting line technique you saw was terrible and that's why my reaction times were so bad. I do not have a line-loc or a Roll Control and when I get one, it will be my third foot holding the brake pedal down. The reaction times were bad because of having to spend the extra time moving my right foot from the brake pedal to the gas pedal. Some guys use the right foot to hold the brake and bring the RPM's up with the gas pedal like you saw but, the starter tripped the light very quickly and I did not have the time to bring the RPM'S up enough. Being that the gassers had a pro tree that day (all yellows light up then green) made it even worse. I like the sportsman tree where the yellows count down individually and then the green. My gas pedal foot should be on the gas pedal bringing the engine up to a set RPM and then burying it on the last yellow(in my case). The clutch pedal foot would also be a quick release at the last yellow and my finger on the button of the roll control would be released on the last yellow. The roll control is a solenoid hooked up to the front brakes only that, when brake pressure is applied and the button is pushed, the solenoid will hold the pressure in the front brake lines only to prevent the car from rolling through the beams. The roll control will be a big help for me. The flywheel is a heavy steel flywheel that was always on the car. They had heavy flywheels back in the day for the inertia needed because of the heavy car weights/ballast and to not bog the small cubic inch motors down too much off the line. I also have a McLeod Clutch, I believe it was their 4 puck disc and it has been great! I do need to check the clearance and adjust the linkage. I hope that helps and that your '55 Hardtop is going well! Take care!
