  • Food Bunker are silicone storage bags heavily advertised online. This is the my most requested item in the first half of 2021 and today I'm testing it out along with the virtually identical Wiselly storage bags to see how they really work!

A little science info for you: some rubbers, plastics , polycarbonate ( HDPE is the most widely used polyethylene film for food packaging. It is semi-translucent and highly solvent-resistant.) are very similar molecularly to oils and fats in foods. So much so, they often bond at a molecular level. Hence the propensity for staining and why those stains can be so hard to clean off. The more you know lol

ALWAYS CHECK FOR FOOD SAFETY. As shown in the video, 2 different companies somehow have the the exact same product. One way to check food grade silicone: stretch the product, if the stretch stays clear it's good, if it turns while while stretching, return it. Also, food safe silicone should not have a smell, if it smells like any sort of plastic, return it.

On another note, It could also be related to the soap and wash cycle settings of the dishwasher. The convenience pods dont have a prewash allotment so you need a powder/liquid/gel additive. As well, the pods sometimes overdose the soap for that wash type which can leave spots and soapy residue on the newly cleaned containers, plates, etc.

A long soak in vinegar might remove the stains. I’m willing to try them because I use a lot of “disposable” bags, which I wash and reuse until they get torn or damaged. To get food stains out of plastic, I have found that putting the item in direct sunlight for a day or so works really quite well. I'd try the same thing with the bags. If you don't have a sunny window to put them in, put water in them and set them out back until it starts getting dark. (The water's just to keep them from blowing off).

I learned years ago to NOT use a dishwasher for silicon items - they always come out in a powdery film.
    I handwash & it's fine.
Tip: For any food stain on any plastic or silicon container - put a tissue sheet or 1/2 a papertowel sheet in the container...squirt in a tiny bit of any dish detegent, 1/2 fill with super hot tap water, close up container & shake until bubbly & paper has hit all sides.
    Tip out & rinse.
Works on tomato, curry, tumeric, cocoa, fruit stains & takes away any rotting smell of forgotten veg, cheese or meat.
Tissue or paper towel & squirt of soap method also works well on nonstick pans & meat dishes that have been washed but still have an oily film.
Bubble up the hot water by hand & slide the paper up the sides of item etc. Tissue is surprising strong when wet.

I got a couple about 2 years ago, silicone zip lock type bags off Amazon.
They're too stiff to put "bigger" items in. They just don't flex the same an plastic freezer bags.
For example, I can't fit bread without smashing the ends of the loaf. But a regular plastic ziplock bag that's not a problem.

Thank you for testing these! I've been curious about them. The price is quite steep, so I hadn't taken the plunge on an unknown, but now I know! I had purchased a set of a different brand which doesn't have the clips, but a zip lock style closure which is quite hard to open with that thick silicone. They also don't have the flat, stand up bottoms nor the clever little roll-up storage loops like these do. The staining, to me, is merely an esthetic issue, as long as there's no residual odor, so these are winners in my book, especially that large 3 liter size. Great freakin' review! Thanks!

I really enjoyed your show, you're just so honest, and it comes through.
I like the idea of these bags a lot-lot. I've been bookmarking different silicone bags so I can decide about them later, but, the ones you reviewed, are not any which I've seen before, and they look super practical and well designed. I'm sold on these for food and such.
For cleaning, though, I wouldn't sweat it. Sometimes we have to do things differently with new things, and we just have to adjust. I would just soak the bags individually in bleach water or oxiclean for the tough stains, and for the water scale, I would just use something like Simple Green, which is a great, safe solvent to use around the house. But, still, what I would do ultimately, is to store staining foods in glass containers, especially borosilicate glass containers. I would keep using the silicone bags in various ways because I think they're very worth it, but, I would just solve the staining problems by treating stains differently than I have in the past. Using a different product to clean them is not like a sacrifice, especially with a great product such as Simple Green.
Thank you for putting this show together, I think you did such a great, thorough job and I appreciate you sharing your findings.

I got some that work pretty well, they're simpler though, the top just comes together in a seal and then you slide a plastic slide over the sealed area to keep it closed similar to the clips on yours, so it never just opens on you. It's a bit hard to pull the slide cover on and off of the seal but it's not bad, they're tough and easy to clean and dry so I'm happy with what I got for the price, they were on Amazon pretty cheap in a kit that also had stretch covers for bowls.

I purchased the Food Bunker 9-piece set and had the same shipping time and experience you had. I'm of mixed opinion about the bags -- the silicone seems rugged enough and I like the concept, but 3 of the bags have at least one clip that will not engage and therefore won't seal the bag. And on one bag, the clip assembly pops off one end of the bag entirely. The bags with functional clips work great. I wish I had seen the Wiselly product first and may try the large size with the heavy-duty clips.

Yeah, all the red flags were super huge when he showed them, they'r so obvious. Also I bet the item listing wasn't even new, they just copy-pasted over their last item listing for bluetooth earbuds or color changing coffee mugs and changed out the pictures, bet the older reviews are like "took forever to get my coffee mug but it's okay, only it doesn't even change colors". Because these guysa re usually so lazy they just switch all the info for whatever they're selling now and change their brand name to reflect it.
Sometimes they don't even get the whole listing changed and you'll be reading about the silicone bag and suddenly there's part of the description about "these earbuds connect seamless to your phone with bluetooth technology. You will be satisfied with the clear sound..." and you're like wait what product am I looking at again? Many many times I've gone back to old orders to look something up or re-purchase something I liked and the listing is some totally different item.

I also had ordered colored bags and got only the white ones. I do like them storage wise, but disappointed with the staining as well. However, “tuperware “ plastic style containers also stain so I won’t hold that against these. I like: 1) not having lids to keep track of 2) the bags can be filled nearly full and still close 3) they can be rolled and stored with very little space!
Within a week of getting them, I did have two of the clips break with very little usage. My solution was to get those black wide clips for office papers and use those. But I’d rather the clips be stronger plastic.

Just seeing this video now (03/2024). I have silicone bags from another company and a few are in their “terracotta” color so that stains from tomato based sauces don’t show. It also helps if one doesn’t put heated sauce (i.e., wait for it to cool) into a silicone container to avoid staining. Another option is to forget silicone and use glass mason jars for those types of sauces. For the record, tomato based sauces (including tomato based chili) have stained all my other reusable plastic containers.

I would have suggested these bags to my mom as a space saver in the refrigerator but I know the high price wouldn’t be justified due to the staining.
