"This final event will obviously loom larger than anything else," just says so much about the way the political class see themselves and their legacies, versus the reality. The truth is that the Brexit vote was hugely significant, but we didn't even leave the EU as a result of it (only of the subsequent General Elections), and for most people affected by the policies the austerity years are what will define Cameron's term in office. The levels of hardship unleashed under austerity dwarf anything we have experienced since the referendum, and I honestly believe that, whether you agree with the policy or not, it is that which defines his time as PM, and George Osborne's as Chancellor.

I still remember when his child died. As an American leading a small media ministry I put up an update asking people to pray for him and his family.
As much as I disagree with his politics, I've never doubted for a single moment that he's a loving father (and husband), that much is obvious and a very big plus point for David Cameron. The tragic death of young Ivan obviously devastated him and Samantha. I agree with the commentator in the programme, they probably should have had more time to grieve and attempt to come to terms with their loss.

David Cameron was socially liberal, which is great, I was all for that in a conservative leader, but of course he was a true blue tory when it came to finances and squeezing the poor.

@@historiamilitaris5161 I sick to death of right wingers using the word woke to bash everything that is considered even slightest left wing. Too many GB News and Talk TV hosts uses "woke" to slam anything they don't like. Bloody annoys me. I am a proud centre left man, but I refuse to use the term woke. It has now been turned into a derogatory term for anyone who has left wing views. A bit like "pinko" and "commie" being used in the 60s to 80s.

@@johnking5174 like I am right wing, or to be acurate centre-right, but I do not have a problem with centre-left people, becauae it is plurality of oponions and democracy which have build our society. And on that we can build the future.
Cameron was a sincere moderate who saw advantage in coalitions and consensus, but history is replete with leaders who got too far ahead of the people they lead. He may have not been the leader right-wing Tories wanted, but he was certainly the leader they needed. Put another way, he's the only former PM who's return to government was only (briefly) controversial because he's a Lord, not because of his record.
I bet Osbourn did say that to Clegg. Makes wonder what else he lied about.
Its amazing to see how good the country looked like it was running during this time and then all of a sudden with the Tory vote slowly ripping the country apart and it is so heartbreaking to see what they have done. I do hope the British people get it right this next general election, it is crucial to get back on track to where they have gone. It feels like a bygone era but it was only 10 years ago! Alot of these journalists and politicians are still working now. Crazy to think how badly Britians direction has gone the last 13 years since.

It's weird to imagine that David Cameron was once the opposition to Tony Blair, given that ideologically you couldn't fit a piece of paper between them.
Austerity was a political choice. Despite the £150k deaths the national debt doubled....and saw the biggest transfer of wealth to the top 1% ever
I never realised he stood up for gay marriage. Good on him! Frankly I think the Conservatives today miss a strong leader like him...
Gay marriage is why God ensured he left in ignominy very soon afterwards. And in hell he will for ever regret that shameful decision. What he should have done is reinstated the ban on homosexuality as it was in the 1960s.
I don't think gay marriage was a good thing. And like the guy in the documentary says, it has led to homosexuals demanding even more - gay flags everywhere now
Cameron voted against the repeal of section 28 in 2003.
It's also worth noting something re the Scottish referendum - the unmentioned precedent was, in a country where the voting system in place (PR) had been chosen to make forming a majority government practically impossible, the SNP achieved just that.
The Lib Dems were in favourite of PR back in 1997 aswell. But The SNP not forming a Majority Government does not stop than pushing a bill through the scottish parliament calling for a referendum on breaking away from the uk when it comes to the scottish greens. But the labour party thought that the scottish pariament would kill The SNP and the break up of the uk stone dead. That Did not work out at all did it.
Not that facts matter for an snp supporter, but Cameron did not vote at all on S28, he was absent.
An empty vessel masquerading as a man of conviction
He styled himself on the Mail/Telegraph caricature of Blair - i.e a shallow charmer bereft of real conviction. The real Blair was more complex and was not lacking in belief (even if it was sometimes misguided).
@@lutherblissett9070it's really interesting that in the programme 'the Labour revolution', styled very much like this, the difference is obvious. The conservatives always say they thought they were doing the right thing but don't explain why, indicating a shallowness. In the labour programme, Blair and Brown seem to tackle most things head on and don't shy away from difficult questions, especially Blair on Iraq

I'll never understand why the BBC aired this series backwards, with the end first and the beginning last. It is so, so stupid. Watching these and knowing what came next (14 years of the Conservative's totally destroying the country), it's like seeing/participating in a car crash in slow motion.

That's true. However I never understood why many students protested higher tuition fees, as they were never going to pay the loans back due to the Mickey mouse courses they chose to 'study'. Media, gender studies, fashion design, ethnic studies and many other 'degrees' those students 'studied' don't exactly offer good job opportunities. Many of my friends who studied such 'degrees' are working in Tesco, McDonald's and Domino's Pizza. They'll never pay their student loans back.

44:02 He wasn't wrong, was he!? Since then we've seen many issues crop up hurting people in the process. He (Cameron) may be proud, but he started the ball towards more insidious policy in schools. A lot to answer for.

15 minutes in really shows just how shallow Cameron’s politics are. He doesn’t have principles and instead moves with whatever way the wind is blowing. They were pledging to match Labour spending, but then suddenly the financial crisis was as a result of Labour overspending.

I’d go back as far as Chamberlain. Plus his successors were even worse.
He adopted Blairite social policies while brutally maintaining Economic policy. Just as Blair adopted Thatcherite economics while brutally maintaining social policy. It is because of this that the Conservative party has been more leftist than Blair. It has pushed through so much liberal social policies that I am disgusted, at least the Republicans were opposed to homosexual "marriage" at the time. This is the issue with Conservatism, all it does is adopt the social policies of progressives and dresses it as their own. The uniqueness of Cameron is that he took over the progressive aspect.

Well, I wouldn't criminalise homosexuality - but I do agree that gay marriage wasn't exactly a big achievement for the Cameron government(which he is most proud of), and to be honest - I think attacks the traditional family structure even more.
