When Buddy sat down at the drums, the laws of physics no longer applied. I got to see him in person at a jazz club in Houston and he would take you to places you never dreamed existed with his amazing skill and speed. It was really hard to wrap your head around what you were hearing and seeing. I miss him!

My dad was a drummer, and I was too. So, after listening to all of my dad's recordings, I then (in the 1960s) became a huge fan of Buddy, and followed him around as much as I could, until his death. This performance is awesome, for sure. But the amazing thing to me is that Buddy was capable of playing like this every time he played, for the vast majority of his career. From his recordings in the 1940s until his death, he relentlessly kicked ass. The phrase "one of a kind" really fits him, and I sure miss that kind of energy today.

No one like him, before, or since. Sure, one day someone else will come along and eclipse his talent on the drums; but it probably won't be any time soon. And we're all lucky that some of his best work exists and will be available for posterity, to inspire others to follow in his footsteps. Hail the master with the sticks; Buddy Rich.

OK! wait a min. I've been playing my whole life and Im 56 years old. I saw Buddy several times live and agree, he was a one off. Nobody possessed whatever it was that he possessed. With that said. I never saw anything like this particular performance. He must have really felt like playing that day. Its beyond everything that we know as normal ability. I love that little section where he starts playing a rock groove and gets such a heavy sound and then just drops it, as if to say......that aint shit......He was right..........!!!!!!!..... Lets go back and study the people he thought were wonderful. We all still have so much to learn from our original pioneers. That you so much for uploading this historical treasure.

i have loved drumming all my life. and i have seen some of the greats, who have mostly past on now. but i have never ever seen or heard one as good as buddy rich. he will never be surpassed. the greatest .

Buddy Rich At The Top, for many years, at least for me, was probably the very best taped drum solo by Buddy Rich. This is my very first time seeing Buddy Rich Insane! And after all these years, I find this video INSANE!! More tricks and a lot of attitude! I LOVE IT!!! The screaming and yelling, surprisingly did not seem to bother Buddy. In my opinion, the vocal antics actually FUELED him. The look on his face sez it all. For a change, he was eating all that stuff up and spitting it out with another trick! If you ever annoyed him, Buddy would be the very first person to tell anyone to shut up. That smirk throughout the solo was worth a million bucks! To me he was, and still is, the very best! What he did at that time was INSANE! Let's be honest. Because of VIDEO, DVD'S, YOU-TUBE and who knows what else, just about everybody can play CRAZY DRUMS! The journey to learn anything in those days was oh so very long! Today, you go home and click on YOU-TUBE and within fifteen minutes you're a doctor! Thank you so much for sharing this video!! I can never ever get tired of seeing GREATNESS!!!!!!!
Glad you enjoyed it. It has been my favorite solo of his for 30 something years. I have a number of second favorite videos of his solos. They were all already posted on here. One of my 2nd favorite solos videotaped is with John Williams because I found it so cool that John Williams was shaking his head in amazement.

Back in the early 70's he played at my high school. I only saw him on Johnny Carson, and a few of us went with our parents not expecting much. After all, it was jazz and not rock. Okay, it will be good for a laugh. Let me tell you now if you never saw him live: It was beyond astounding. He played like this video for the whole 2 hours, and from that day forward I viewed him as the greatest drummer I have ever heard.

Phenomenal! Buddy Rich is the greatest drummer of all time, hands down. It's not even close. I have been fortunate enough to have seen many of the greatest rock drummers live, including John Bonham, Keith Moon, Carl Palmer, Ginger Baker and Billy Cobham. Excluding Neil Peart, who I have never seen live, they are five of the greatest rock drummers in history and truly, none of them could hold a candle to Buddy Rich and I am a big rock fan. The virtuosity, the syncopation, the timing, the hand speed, in this solo is just unbelievable, almost superhuman

Everything Saint Buddy did was amazing! The old story goes that, after a marathon solo the drummer walks off into the wings. The bassist says to the pianist "Who does he think he is, GOD?" The pianist replies "No, he IS God, he just thinks he's BUDDY RICH!"

Amazing to watch! A friend of mine and I were lucky enough to see him and his band play in a small Minnesota town out in the middle of nowhere back in 1979. It always brings a smile to my face when I think of that night! Both Buddy and my friend are gone, but not the memories. May they both rest in peace!

Sure brings back memories from 2 of the most interesting years in my life; on the road with that band is why. I was married to Jim Trimble (RIP) who played trombone in the band. He won my heart at the Scotch Mist in Chicago when I heard him play the solo "Somewhere" from the Westside Story album.
I was an 18 year old high school student in the tiny town of Yuma Arizona in 1985. My parents brought me to an auditorium to see Buddy Rich. (still not sure how he ended up in Yuma) I'd never heard of him before. My favorite drummer at the time was John Bonham which I still enjoy but Buddy was of course in a completely different league. WOW!! At one point he broke out of a solo and just hit the bell part of all the many cymbals with such incredible speed and skill that everyone in the audience was quiet as a mouse. We just couldn't believe how unbelievable he was. It's awesome to see the CZcams clips of him from that year now. I'm honored to have seen the best that will ever be.
I was incredibly lucky to see Buddy perform a solo concert at South Dakota State University. I was just a young college student at the time. I knew a little about him, having seen him on the tonight show. It was one of the most incredible performances I've ever seen. I still remember the sweat dripping off his face when he really got going.,.. and when you thought he couldn't go any faster he would turn it up even more..... just incredible.. had to be around 1985.. rest in peace Buddy......

BRich, when graduating w/ honors from Berkley School of Music in Boston, was so f'n phenom. already at 19 yrs old, that the 2 or 3 drum teachers there, actually made lots of calls to the Big Boys, Top Band leaders etc about how Buddy was the best they'd ever seen or heard when he was done there and how everyone needs to listen to him as you'll all regret not snatchin this very bright, savant musician/drummer, yet a bit cocky kid, right up, immediately B4 someone else does! Buddy was paid $10,000 a week by Tommy Dorsey Band when he was like 24 or so! (Equiv. to approx $60,000 a week today! Can you even imagine makin that kinda doe in the Music Biz or what's left of it, today???? "Of course a lotta rock stars ie McCartney, Clapton have brought home $25 Million after a 5 or 6 month tour! How much is that a week?? That's $1,086,000 a week is all! B4 taxes though! Still, $685,000 a week wasn't bad in the 80's!
He was honored by the Berklee College of Music with an honorary doctorate but never went there or any other school to study music. He also never took lessons or ever learned to read music.

I gotta a chance to see Buddy play at the Kool Jazz Festival in Orlando before he passed. My father was one f the hired Photographers so I got in for free. His show was messmerizing .. You heard snare riffs but you would swear his hands never moved. Drum rolls one handed. Criss cross snare to floor toms all combined with hi hats and bass drum. It was his show in Orlando the reason I became a drummer... He didnt just play a drum kit... He was the drum kit.... Buddy Rich was not only the best but he was a drumming God... He also received a Phd in Music Theory and Percussion from Missouri State University...
The year was 1979 Buddy head lined the jazz and BB King head lined the blues at that concert.
As Mel Torme quoted ' you'll never see his like again' saw him with his fabulous band on 2 consecutive occasions , totally different set and solo , amazing drumming !
Much is always made about Buddy's solo's ( which were incredible as this one is ) but i was always mind blown with his ability to play for and drive the band. Not reading music he had all these complex jazz arrangements set in his mind and memory. It is said that he only had to hear a tune one time and then he had it forever and he could basically play anything. That to me is real genius.

I'm a drummer now for 30 years. Both marching band, orchestra band, and Jazz band in L.A. I love all aspects of drumming. I love all styles. From Bonzo, Mooney, Pert, Bozzio, and my uncle Don Richards. But above all is Buddy Rich. He could do more one handed than most drummers can do with 2. He is my idol growing up. Along with Billy Cobham, Michael Shrieve and Carlton Barrett.

My drum instructor Mr. Gordon knew him, not everybody can get this good, Buddy had mad skills. Probably the world's greatest drummer.
One thing about Buddy Rich was that he played his solos in a Musical Fashion. His drums sounded fantastic. His cymbal work was awesome the way he punctuated that bass drum. No need for two bass drums for Buddy. He made one Bass Drum sound like two. His Precision is drum rudiments rank Supreme. He never needed a drum teacher he was Born with this talent. His chops and speed are legendary but really what wows me his ideas in a drum solo. Never boring. Like reading a good book. He presents page after page chapter after chapter and when you think its the end of the page you are dead wrong he throws in more mind boggling endings. and also notice those WRISTS its in the WRISTS not the Arms. He played effortlessly and its that Wrist action that makes it look like another day in the office for Buddy Rich. Got some great drummers out there today no doubt about it but but there was only one Buddy Rich and he proved this so many many times. To this date no one and I will I MUST repeat there are no BUDDY RICHS out there. Buddy Rich the one the only the MASTER DRUMMER. enough said.
I was a pro drummer from age 12. Yes 12! I can't believe it but I actually passed up the chance to see Buddy live in Edinburgh!!! You see, I was gigging! Playing is better than watching...every time!
Every art form has one or two greats that come along that leave a special legacy. Buddy rich is one of those people.The strength and stamina that it took to do this solo for over 8 minutes is mind boggling. But then you have a naysayers, "Yea, but....

One of the reasons Buddy Rich was always highly regarded as "the best drummer" is because many seasoned, terrific, precise drummers often cited him in interviews as the most exceptional. But to understand Buddy's own development you have to go back to two drummers who didn't have the drum technology in their day that Buddy had but they laid down the blueprint for some of the most dynamic beats and rudiments still used today.
I start with bandleader/drummer Chick Webb -- he was a deformed musician, a hunchback all the way back. He discovered Ella Fitzgerald who sang with his band at 17. His drumming and lightning fast cowbell on "Liza" (1938) is incredible for the era (on CZcams). You will hear that "Buddy Rich" style snare work and the snap on the rim the way Rich later embellished. This was a crude drum set and still, Webb managed to ignite it. He is truly a legendary performer.
After Chick, came the other legendary maniacal drummer who preceded Buddy Rich in the household name department -- (often called the Keith Moon of his day because he was just as crazy and exciting as the Moon). Gene Krupa. He was exciting to watch and really put on a percussive show. Many believe Buddy was better. Yeah, Buddy may have been bit faster. But for variety and originality, Gene Krupa was unbeatable. Iron Butterfly's drum solo in the 1960's on "In-a-Gadda-Da-Vida," and Ginger Baker's solo on "Toad," -- all basic Gene Krupa style workouts from the 1930's and 40's.
However, you'd be surprised how many 20+-year-old drummers never heard of Buddy Rich or Gene Krupa. I visit music stores from time to time and talk to them. No idea. Not even the expert behind the counter selling drum sets and giving lessons.
Music teachers don't even bring these drummers up in music classes. (I have been there too. They talk music theory, teach them a little about music appreciation. But never cite some of the greatest musicians to have played. You would think an introduction to these people would motivate a student to want to play. We certainly know how to bore our talented students to death, don't we?
Teach saxophone? And don't mention or play Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Gerry Mulligan or Art Pepper and so many others? Then you're not doing your job. Teach trumpet and you don't discuss the diversified styles of Al Hirt, Miles Davis, Doc Severensin, Louis Armstrong, Clark Terry? Dizzy? Chet Baker? Bix? None of them?
It does make me really happy when I see some young person comment on Buddy in a manner that they are so impressed with him. His legacy deserves to be preserved. We pay homage to his talent, not whether he was a nice guy or not. All humans have faults. But sometimes his arrogance and obnoxiousness were part of his personality on those drab talk shows. The day he crucified country music on one show was historic. Classic live television. May even be on CZcams. And -- what "great" drummer beside Ringo Starr is ever seen on any talk shows today and familiar to the general public? Who? Neil Pert? Outside of rock few people know who he is and he is great. He's just not a Buddy Rich on drums or personality. Had Keith Moon lived -- he might have been the exception. He would have been a great talk show guest and many would know him through his antics. There are lots of great drummers who existed. But the beginning and the end will always be Buddy Rich.

I live 45 min away from the Ludwig drum factory, They have been making drums for over 100 years and it shows. I'm playing a 3 piece kit now 20'' kick 12'' rack tom 14x14 floor tom made from cherry with a 14x6.5 black beauty snare. I have shure microphones on the kit such a huge sound.
I saw Buddy Rich & Gene Krupa in a live drum battle, on stage at the Downtown theater in Detroit back in the 1940s. One was doing Cherokee the other Chinatown- It was awesome. My guess is that this would have been recorded in the mid 1960s--A) the technology--not just the video, but the mics and his hardware, and B) his hair--the style as well as the amount!
We've lost two other great drummers in 2019--Neil Peart and Ginger Baker. I got to see Buddy live twice in my life, and I'm honored! He's definitely the greatest of all time!

When I listen to solos today, I can hear the influence Buddy had on drummers. From current jazz drummers to the gospel chop guys to the guys jamming it out in their bedrooms, they all have elements of Buddy in their drumming.

I am SO thankful that the Lord put me with an earth father who had a drum set he liked dabbling with and brought me up on drummers like Buddy, Gene Krupa and Louis Bellson. These were the players who brought drums out of the background of the band and into the spotlight. Buddy was without a doubt the world's greatest drummer and is STILL inspiring drummers worldwide to not just be good but to "master" the craft. Solos like this never get old. WOW.

Saw this clip again, this is insane!!!! A hummingbird can even flap his wings as fast, lol, and it seems he's not even breaking a sweat.
Everyone has their own opinion about drummers and solos, and that's fair enough. I was a 70's kid who started playing drums at 3 years old and was brought up listening to Buddy and Gene and Louie and big band jazz, so that's the music I started playing to first as a young drummer. I can't read music, so everything I've done on drums over the past 50+ years has been by ear, or what I learned from a couple of teachers for the short time that I had them.
Other drummers may have the chops Buddy had, and may be able to shred like he could in terms of speed, but what blows my mind about Buddy when he solos is the fluidity and the ability to make things up as he goes along with dynamic and even comedic shifts.
Buddy mastered the rudiments and his left hand came from some other being I think, but he can improv and play a different rapid-fire combination of patterns with all four limbs each time while not even looking at what he's doing. His stick control and his body control in how economical he was with his physical motion were mind-boggling.
He played the drums, the cymbals, the rims, the bass drum, the stands...and the sticks like it was a walk in the park.
This solo is a perfect demonstration of his improvisational skills, and his solo from the Sinatra show (look up "The Impossible Solo" on CZcams) where he actually has a heart attack in mid-solo but finishes the song is a testament to how hard he always worked to put on the best show each night for the audience.
Some may be able to imitate Buddy, but there will never be another Buddy when it comes to soloing or swinging a big band. He was, quite simply, a machine.

Lol, As far as drum solos go, this is about the farthest from "boring" I have ever seen. You must bore easily, I would like to recommend skydiving.

I love Rush and Neil's drumming, I thought the Exit stage Left solo during yyz was great. Over the years, however what people call his solo wasn't really a drum solo anymore, not the whole thing, anyway. He's added so much electronic stuff I don't consider a drum solo. For instance he added the jazz music to it. It's just like when I play along to CD's when I'm by myself, I don't consider that doing a drum solo. Neil plays along with prerecorded tracks and even has parts of the solos where the drum parts are echoed. That may make it less boring, but it's not a drum solo.

I was blessed to see this guy two times in the early and mid 80s before he died. Simply the most emotional, properly trained, and over all showman of any drummer I have seen in any style. Greatest drummer in my mind, bar none.
Say all you want about all these Rock Drummers. with there big setup with 3 snare drums, and two bass drums, etc. there was no one equal to Buddy Rich, maybe Gene Krupa, and Ed Shaughnessy from the tonight show band, and Ed learn some trick from Johnny Carson. but if you watch Buddy Rich, how he strikes the drums, and the cymbals, how he can get a different note each and every time. I have a cousin who played drums in a local jazz band years ago, and we watch a Buddy Rich Solo just like this, and he told me, watch how he strikes the drum,look at each stick angle and how he the stick strikes , the area of the drum the stick strikes, etc. He told me no one, no one had a that kind of talent when it came to playing drums, and i have seen anyone come close to matching Buddy Rich as a drummer. The only Rock drummer that comes close is maybe Neil Peart of Rush.

hey paul....great comment.................in my opinion the greatest all around drummer ever is neil peart .....not so much now but in the 70s and 80s he was respected more from other pros...age has slowed him......buddy relied greatly on the snare with his 32s and 64s ..............neil could play off time with ease and his precision is what set him apart from others......would love to see the greatest drummers of all time battle with a 5 pc set....no effects and no double bass........raw drumming......no ice cream, just cake.....one ride ....one crash and one bass............drummers get all the chicks....I think that neil said buddy was his influence...............take care........
+spockone thanks for the comments, and i will agree with what you said about Neil Peart. I saw Rush back in 1992 where I live, and yes Neil Peart put on one but the greatest solo I have ever seen. His command of his drum set was very very good. but at a distance, and the way he was striking the drum, told me why he needed such a big set. it as if he needed three snare drums and and 4 brass drums, because each was tuned different, if you know what i mean. I watch him turn out one of the best drum solos for the time period. but as you said, just a 5 piece set, and yes drummers do get all the girls. Maybe that why i am unlucky in lust :p

I watch other great drummers who seem to struggle with some moves where Rich floats, if I can say that right.

Then there’s everybody else.
Anyone playing the drums as a serious musician, and/or as a profession, have to admit Buddy´s in a league of his own. There is always heated discussions on who´s the best drummer, and much of it comes down to different taste in music, but as far as both technique AND musicality goes, he was so talented it almost made you depressed, knowing you couldn´t reach his level, ever. He also made "more with less", keeping his drumkits with just the basic components, and that makes it all the more impressing.
I think most people would agree that he was just one of those insanely talented musicians that motivates, impresses and amazes others music lovers to keep reaching for their own great potentials.
I have a feeling this is not the first time Mr Rich ever played the drums! Simply unbelievable.

David Bondra Bonham was the best "rock" drummer of our lifetime. As amazing as Bonham solos where his biggest assets was in his composition and approach to the music. Every Zeppelin song had groove and swing no matter what time signature or style the band was in. He was a bass players dream
