In the poem, Dante puts some men of the church (and even a Pope, Bonifacio VIII) in Hell, but basically it was a political choice, not a religious one. Dante was very catholic (he fought in the battle of Campaldino with the Tuscan allies of the Pope) and he was a man of his time: for him, it was normal to believe blindly in the Catholic religion and to sustain the cause of crusaders, because at that time the society was quite entirely based on religion. If the Divine Comedy really was an anti-catholic poem, it wouldn't have been published at all (or at least not during the XIII and XIV century).
I mean this is a movie Also with all the fucked up imagery in the original poem in order to do a live action adaptation they'd need to stray so far from the source material to the point where it's a completely different story. Since a direct live action adaptation of The Divine Comedy would almost certainly be considered significantly worst than Cannibal Holocaust

The film`s final scene in case anyone was confused what the filmmakers wanted us as the viewers to take us away as to the legitimacy of Roman Catholicism and the concept of "holy war": Dante rips his blood cross off of his armor and throws it into a garbage heap(Hell is based on Sheol,literally a garbage heap in Israel!),it then turns into a familiar-looking snake and slithers back to Hell.
