  • Our treatment specialist and founder of ATMC, Lyle Murphy, answers your biggest concerns about the second generation antipsychotic drug Clozapine.
Clozaril is the brand name for the active ingredient, clozapine. Other brand names include Clopine, Clozapine Synthon, and FazaClo.
    Q&A From you!
    00:00 - Intro

    06:04 - Could clozapine affect one's cognitive abilities/IQ?
08:31 - Is Clozapine worth the risk for those suffering from severe schizophrenia, considering how dangerous some of the side effects are?
10:07 - What antipsychotic is a good alternative to clozapine if you have to have something?
12:24 - Why would someone be prescribed a "therapeutic" dose of clozapine?
12:53 - Is olanzapine a better antipsychotic than clozapine if you worry about your physical health most?
15:20 - Which is less likely to cause tardive dyskinesia, olanzapine 2.5mg or clozapine 25mg?
15:55 - How long do antipsychotics withdrawal symptoms last from 2 months from 100 mg of Clozapine?
17:40 - What are the chances of a low dose (25mg) of clozapine causing tardive dyskinesia?
18:09 - Does a significant weight loss change the efficacy of clozapine?
19:04 - Can hypomotility caused by clozapine affect the absorption and efficacy of it?
20:32 - Will fasting for 24 hours affect the absorption of clozapine and cause a problem?
    24:25 - ATMC
Careful Clozaril withdrawal can minimize the potential for rebound psychosis and cholinergic crises. Clozaril belongs to a class of drugs called SGA’s or second-generation antipsychotics.
Used in the treatment of certain mental conditions such as schizophrenia and psychosis, Clozaril is often prescribed only AFTER other antipsychotics did not work or caused severe side effects.
Alternative to Meds has been the expert on antipsychotic withdrawal and Clozaril alternatives for over 15 years. We have published evidence regarding our success. Underlying issues can in many cases be addressed in much less toxic ways. It is possible that some medical conditions could have been overlooked. Commonly some or all of the original contributing factors have improved or changed, and the diagnosis one was given may no longer lead to recovery.
What Is Clozaril (clozapine) Used For?
Clozaril is used in the treatment of certain mental disorders, where other (usually at least two) other antipsychotic medications have not worked, or where the side effects were too harsh and could not be tolerated by the patient. A candidate for a prescription of Clozaril could be someone diagnosed with conditions such as:
    Treatment-resistant schizophrenia.
Treatment-resistant schizoaffective disorder with a known risk for suicide.
Please note that elderly patients with dementia-related psychosis should NOT be prescribed Clozaril (or other antipsychotic medications) due to the increased risk of death.
    Discontinuing/Quitting Clozaril (clozapine)
There are circumstances where immediate withdrawal of Clozaril is medically needed as a life-saving intervention. These include potentially life-threatening adverse reactions to the drug which are delineated in detail under the adverse effects section, for instance, cardiovascular compromise, risk of stroke, signs of tardive dyskinesia, and other severe reactions.
In the majority of cases, gradual Clozaril tapering methods are recommended for coming off the drug.
Always seek medical guidance and direction from your doctor before making changes to medications.

I went cold turkey from this drug a few years ago. I had severe insomnia, earworm, anxiety attack/hyperventilation episode at night, and lost track of time throughout the day. I'm being coerced by parents to stay on this drug as long as I'm living under their roof. The psychiatrist knows this and gives convenient reasons why i should be on it. I don't see him enough, maybe twice a year. I have a job and money and would like to move out, but my parents don't give that idea any attention and nothing gets done. I feel so pathetic typing this. My parents have giving me enough support despite their dysfunction.... so i suppose I'm grateful for THAT over the years...., but now its time to move on.

@@conquernremind408 I take 200mg of clozapine before bed. Ive been doing it for 5 years. It is the smallest dose for someone but it does mess with sleep and it causes hypersalvation. I get hunger urges throughout the night and have to eat something before going back to sleep. Strangely and fortunately im not overweight or diabetic yet. Not sure what you want to know about my situation....the details are in my initial comment.

I think the reason people ask if it is a benzo is the chemical name, 3 chloro-6-(4-methylpiperazine-1-yl)-1 1 1-hbenzo[b][1,4]benzodiazapine;hydrochloride. I take it because it makes me sleep, it stops the voices, and I am so wound up off antipsychotics that my neck, back, shoulder and face spasm. I stay up for days with mania and can't focus on crap. You can't tell I am tranqualized after I wake up. If I took this in the day though you are correct I would be severely disabled. I eat in that state after I go to bed sometimes and don't remember doing it. I don't do anything else and I don't feel hungover when I wake up. I don't know why you brought up weed other than there seems to be evidence that psychotic people like smoking weed. In places no one smokes they have the same percentage of psychosis. I was ready to end it when I started taking medication. I tried every homeopathic thing you could imagine even drinking turpentine to try to fix this. What does it matter if the drugs mess us up? We get to live without constant noise in out heads and we get to rest. Do you think I can meet a girlfriend when I am losing my mind? I might be able to start a Manson family, but a girlfriend? Why would I want a girlfriend to watch me slowly get worse the older I get? Have you ever listened to a paranoid psychotic go off on a loved one they believe betrayed them? They say unforgivable things. They destroy healthy relationships and make them hell. One of my favorite things about taking these drugs is that I no longer think about sex. I have finally started doing things I had dreamed about for years. It's very difficult to get motivated but I take it slow and steady. Something I have never known before now. I feel at peace.

Would actually suggest not to lose mch weight while withdrawing ...replace a bit of other illnesses to get off cloz..and then manage those....watch out fr diabetes....for me at least.

My brother is on it. He is on 300mg a day. He lost so much weight that he looks like he's got anorexia even though he eats 3 times a day. He has his blood drawn once a week. It's been 5 months and he's shaking and has to walk slow. Damn, he's having severe panic attacks. Was in the hospital 2 months and one day. He is a type 2 diabetic and it was very well controlled. Since he was put on Clozapine, his glucose has gone very high! His complexion looks awful. He looks like hell. Has to live with our older brother and I do what I can to help but he can not live on his own. He had been on Seroquel and Risperdal and Ativan for 9 years and it seemed to have stopped working. He has a more rare type of Catatonic Schizophrenia. He's never used drugs or used alcohol or even smoked. He has always been always been a clean kid. His Cognition is like someone with Dementia. He is just not there. When he was coming off the Seroquel and Risperal, he knew more than he does now even though they said that it stopped working. I want him off of it. He looks like hell. He had suffered for 25 years. He is not a danger to himself or anyone else. He was on Thorazine and it worked then put on Zyprexa 10 mg and Wellbutrin 150 mg. How can just talking about something going to level a chemical imbalance? He had a MRI and the drs said it was strictly chemical. It's like saying if you talked about it enough, your diabetes will level out. You need insulin! He was only in the hospital twice for his Catatonic SZ. He will lock up and freeze up without the Ativan. I hate this drug. I've lost my brother. He is worse than before he was on put on it. My brother was not psychotic when he was on the Seroquel and Risperal until after he had on it for 9 years. He had his mind and was about 80% normal. I think they gave up on him and put him on this drug. WHAT can we do now? Would he have withdrawls if he was switched to something else? Can someone use one drug that was successful and then it wasn't, go back to that drug if they've been off of it for a long time and it actually work again? They say "Resistant" well, I am not giving up on my brother. There has got to be an answer.

I haven't slept in days because I haven't taken it in days. I don't like that I can't sleep without it so I guess I'm detoxing off of it? When I was taking mental health classes I was very tired from only 100mg so they dropped my morning dose to 50mg. I don't think it is for me because it is a sleeping pill for me which is why I am not trying to take it anymore. I don't know when I will be able to sleep again. Insomnia is not fun.

Same here - I hate this drug too it Is seriously harming my brother has been for year. It is making him sick..He has never been a danger to himself or others. No one listens, massive negligence 😣
Getting off it is a nightmare it causes psychosis ?! SHOULD BE BANNED.
Here in uk coroners have reported it to the health secretary after fatalities.. still in use.

@@meesh.G getting off the seroquel and Risperdal caused psychosis. It's not only withdrawal symptoms but it's the fact there's nothing in their system to control the SZ anymore. He really did much better on other meds. I don't know how long he'll be on this as they check his blood work every 2 weeks now instead of every week and he's been on it for 10 months. Thank you for your comment and I pray your brother will get much better.
