I really hate that there isn't a wireless android auto/apple car play option on a 2020 Tacoma. The tech on these trucks is laughable. From the cameras and radio to power seats just becoming available it really drives me nuts. I love my truck otherwise but can't seem to find an option that will allow for wireless connection.
Probably should be noted that this will only work on tacomas that are 2020 and above that have apple carplay etc you must have a head unit that has carplay in it for this to work. This unit acts like your cell phone plugged in for carplay purposes, so essentially 2019 and below is a no-go on factory headunit
You did not explain if it can be turned off and on so if you wanted to use something from the original factory installed unit you still can once in a while and then turn on the plug in unit only when you want to use all the Android features - can you?
U can either unplug the unit to turn it off or u can just switch out of it on ur factory head unit by pushing audio or menu so u can flip in and out of ur factory radio , For example the box will be in the menu where it says on ur factory radio to select am. Fm or xm radio when the unit is plugged in it’ll show up on that menu of ur factory radio so u can click it to start it up or go back to the menu to go back to ur fm or xm and so on
So can I take my sim out of my phone and it’ll work without Wi-Fi hotspot? Also, how do you remove the sim? Please answer. I’ve searched the web up and down for these 2 questions.
How do you charge your phone and access CarPlay with this unit? It’s cool, but if I have to go back and forth of plugging in one verses the other to use features, I don’t think I’d get one. Very interested how that works!

Got a promo to resume for $15 a month for 3 months, I got it then let it expire. I called back in and asked to resub at $15 a month because that's what they established its value to me, not $25, and they honored it. I do the same with XM radio since there are certain channels I like and don't care for the whole line up. I follow the same process, for $5 a month.
If it's like any other device like this, it's its own unit. You wouldn't need to cast your phone to it. Unless I missed a video, I don't see a confirmation from the channel. I should be getting mine today and can confirm if I do.
So I'm an android user, so I have no idea what carplay looks like. That said, looks like you have to enable carplay for this to function. Once booted, it's android. It is really quick and responsive. There is no delay in audio when watching a video, which is what I experienced with others. The unit also turns off Bluetooth for the truck for some reason. This was a just about a deal breaker for me. I found out that you pair your phone through this device, and then control your phone through the screen, like normal. I really like it after 1 day so far. I can keep you updated if you want. Or if you want me to look for a specific feature.

I just use my wifi from my tacoma 15 bucks a month and can connect up to like 6 devices. Dont have to Hotspot from yr phone and service Is alot better

I believe the issue is Android Auto. The vehicle needs to read the device as such, and then allows the projection on to the screen.
