- In this ukulele tutorial you'll learn how to play a bossa nova pattern over the song Wave by Antonio Carlos Jobim.
Although typically you would play a Bossa Nova pattern finger style, in today’s lesson we will strum the rhythm with our index finger.
For this Bossa Nova uke lesson we will work on the "A" section of the tune, "Wave."
Bossa Nova became famous in the 1970’s when Jazz saxophonist Stan Getz collaborated with Brazilian composers and guitar players Antonio Carlos Jobim and João Gilberto.
Most Bossa Nova patterns are played with an alternating bass pattern on beats 1 and 3 using the root and 5th of the chord but would require a ukulele with a low G string. Since many of us don’t have a low G, but want to learn this lesson, the strumming will work whether you have a soprano, concert, tenor, or baritone ukulele.
This 2 bar strum pattern looks like this: (D = down, U = up)
D D D U U D U U D D
1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + | 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 +
A few other techniques to try is adding some mutes and staccato (short) notes.
The chords used are DMaj7, Gdim7, Bbdim7, Amin7, D13, GMaj7, Gmin7, F#min7, B13, B7(b9), Emin7, A13, Dmin7 and G9.
Don't worry if you don't know all these chords, I will go over them in the video with chord diagrams on the screen.
Once you master this Bossa Nova Pattern for ukulele you can apply it to any chord progression you like.

Here is another but simpler Bossa Nova lesson I did only using one chord czcams.com/video/w_VtDJ41CI0/video.html
thank you very much, great explanations, I wish the chord diagrams were showing when you played at the end, but this will encourage me to memorise it sooner rather than later.
Thank you much Terry for this tuto. Exactly what I was looking for ! Great piece to begin Bossa Nova, just challenging as it should do for improving my play ! I've made a paper sheet to follow the video, with all your explanations about chords and strumming patterns. That will keep me busy for a while ... Thank's again from New-Caledonia !
We have come a longs ways Terry Carter! Last year this time when I watched a video like this I said! Forget about it! But now a year later after taking a few of your courses and watching your CZcams videos and a few other Ukulele and guitar teachers videos I've become a more skilled and thrilled ukulele/Guitarlele/Baritone Ukulele player! Saying all that there are some chords in this video that's still beyond my skill set level but nevertheless you have inspired a song from me written with this Bosa Nova style rhythm and chord progression stayed tuned for my JuicyJuicy IG post and CZcams debut of this short but juicefully sweet tune! Thank you Teach! Uke On! Uke Strong! 🙏🎸🔥🎼💪🏾🎫🎉
Just Awesome Sir!
Wating for your next video Sir :))
I like this song and cant wait to practice
That is great, thank you, I look forward to hearing how you do on it. Keep me posted.
Awesome sounding chords...I will add them in my songs... you do a great job man ...thx for the time you spend!have a nice day;))
Of course Don, so glad you like them. I appreciate the kind words and the support.
Thanks Sir 👍👍
do you plan to add a tutorial on B part? This would wrap it up nicely... I am sure I am not the only one who would enjoy it!
Im from Brazil! Very good música Brazil in Usa!
Thank you very much, Terry! Wouldn't you teach us part B? Oh please! Teach us part B!
I am so thankful for this video!! wave is one of my favourite songs and I'm stoked to be able to learn it right away! would it be possible to learn the middle section as well? I'd love to be able to play the whole song! I have a question, at 10:09 is the label supposed to be Bb13 instead of B13, and the next chord A13 instead of Bb13? that's how you're playing it anyway, and it's correct afterwards but I was confused at first!
Many thanks Terry, great lesson, and a good arrangement to practice the Bossa Nova strum
You are welcome. Next will be the finger style Bossa Nova pattern
hi terry, @@Ukelikethepros can you do the B part of this song at some stage? I found the score, and have downloaded the music, it would be really nice to get it to come together. I have got the A part down pat. It resonated for me, I don't know why.
Bruce, great point. Yes we can do the entire song.
Nice lesson and very understandable. Now if I can add some muting at the same time :)
Thank you. Yes the muting and some staccato notes are what make it sound authentic.
Hi, Excellent chord Progression. If i make a video with that : i write your name. Good work Friend. Best reagrds.
Voice crack at 4:46?
Lol
im laughing so much wtf
I wish you would’ve put the chords in when you ran through the section.
What key are you tuning your Uke to?
Standard G-C-E-A with low G
1:48
hey, it's an f sharp minor chord, not a dmaj7
you played
a (g string)
c# (c string)
f# (e string)
a (a string)
f sharp minor is notes: f#, a, c#
only if i'll add the d note i'll get dmaj7 chord
the best way for me to play it is
a (g)
d (c)
f# (e)
c# (a)
