Gillian has always been an amazing actress, definitely undervalued in my opinion. But she's been getting some of the best material of her career recently...not to mention some stellar performances on stage. When the event series of "The X-Files" was getting underway, Gillian gave an interview where she briefly discussed her campaign behind the scenes for equal pay. Apparently Gillian was initially quoted payment significantly below that of David Duchovny. It doesn't surprise me, but seriously? Both characters are a must -- it's not as if Scully was some random guest character. She eventually received equal pay, but it's a joke this was a process she had to confront.
Yeah, and she *still* had to fight during the revival. Unbelievable!

I completely get her. Singing in public is terrifying. Especially when you're not used to it. It's a million times worse than acting.
In fact, at acting school, one of the first exercises we had as a class was singing. Everybody in the class got a song they had to learn. We had a professional musician/ composer (who was for instance a backup singer for Adele in her Sydney concerts) accompanying us. And our teacher was Philip Quast, a Broadway star with something like 3 Olivier Awards.
Because singing, when you're not confident, puts you in an extremely vulnerable position. And he wanted us to tap into that. And he was right.
Even for the people in the class who seriously struggled with the singing part, it was captivating. So much more than a perfectly sung song with no heart. Because they were so vulnerable.
Even as someone with years of singing lessons under my belt I get extremely nervous with singing. I have yet to not shake like a leaf singing in public.
That song written by PJ Harvey sung by Gillian has been one of my go tos the past few months. I LOVE IT!

Based on how she transitions from her American accent to her British one(and vice versa,) depending on where she is and who she is talking with, I wonder if she sometimes uses ‘badly’ instead of ‘bad’ sometimes? I do myself, after going to an international school where both queen’s English and American English spelling is accepted and differences in dialect is also common. Don’t even realize I am doing it until a relative of mine tells me, afterwards, “you sounded so American, back there!”

"Bad" in that context is wrong in any country. "Bad" is an adjective. "Badly" is the adverb that should have been used to modify "sing".
I do think there is some variation in the past imperfect of "to sit". British people use "was/ were sat" whereas North Americans would use "was/were sitting".

I know this is 4 years later but I agree with you. Tom Hanks must have known he was going to play the guitar being that it was behind the chairs they were sitting in. You can tell she was completely caught off guard and she didn’t even have a say to which song she was going to sing!

I’m always confused by her accent. I get that she is half Brit/half American. I travel over seas a lot and have had to watch the horrible BA videos with her in full English accent(along with the Mr. Bean routine)asking for my change. I would think she would be using it while she is on a show in England. Also I swear British airways stole the video stuff from Air NZ. I use to have to watch the All Blacks and Frodo tell me how to put my seatbelt on.

She’s American but spent much of her life in the uk and switches between both accents easily
zephyra her parents are Americans, she was born in America but spent her early childhood in the London but her parents moved back to America when she was still a kid. She moved back to London after the x-files finished. She speaks in both accents interchangeably depending on who she’s talking to. She’s said it’s like being bilingual.
