Sauron, the Dark Lord Competitive Commander Deck Tech

- From the forthcoming Lord of the Rings: Tales from Middle Earth Magic the Gathering set, we have the Dark Lord himself to head a powerful Commander deck!
This deck is based heavily on the Grixis turbo decks of the cEDH subformat, and utilizes classic Underworld Breach and Thoracle lines to push out a win.

Amass doesn’t work that way you won’t get two triggers of March from the Black Gate, both Amass effects check to see if you have an Army creature, then puts +1/+1 counters on it before creating creating a 0/0 token of the creature type. But because how Amass Orcs works when you go to put +1/+1 counter on an army it gains the Orc creature type. (So if you have a zombie army and you Amass Orcs 1, the zombie army becomes a zombie Orc army, but not vice versa because the regular amass mechanic doesn’t add a creature type it just checks for an army and if there isn’t one, makes a 0/0 zombie army token)

@@PlaneswalkerProject no worries, it’s weird how it works and I only found out cause I’m building a high power version of this deck and had to research how amass worked before diving in.
Heads up it does work they ended up errating old amass cards so that if you already control an army that isn’t that type it now gains it
IT does work vice versa because the regular amass mechanic got errata to Amass zombie
Deck needs changeling outcast. Changelings are armies (army is a creature type), it's a 1 mana army and can't be blocked.
very good tech however it cuts you off from being able to use army tokens as sac outlets , as long as the changeling is out you cant create a new army you must amass the 1/1 counters on the changelings
you can also run nazgrul and maskwood nexus to make all wraiths armies as well as each one triggering tempt to get + counters each instance
Aragorn the Uniter looks interesting. Food Chain, underworld breech, and a very interesting synergy with painter's servant.
The question is why run him over 4 color Omnath . Omnath is much better
@Korey G Yes, 4C Omnah is a very powerful commander; the deck styles are completely different. Aragorn is a somewhat slower deck more control/midrange than anything else. Omnath, from what I've seen, tends to focus more on consistently getting that second landfall trigger to power out a win as fast as possible.
Ward isnt additional cost, actually. Its better. Its a triggered ability that counters the spell
The one commander I want to make from this set. So glad this one was made over the Rakdos one. Definitely bookmarking this for ideas when I start brewing for this.

The Rakdos one just wasn't hitting it for me when I was looking at the Sauron variants. I'm also currently jammimg with Grixis builds, so this one was just so tempting.

Also just wanted to say I love your content, this was a great list, and one of four I want to build. The other three are Gandalf the white, bilbo birthday celebrant, and king of the oathbreakers some for fun but I think Gandalf has a lot of potential for mono white cedh as either blink, artifact, or legendary tribal.
You can't have a zombie army AND a orc army at the same time, no? It says put a +1/+1 counter on an Army you control. Its also an Orc
So if you already have a zombie army, you put a +1/+1 counter on it and it will get the Orc type too. So just 1 Army at the same time
Correct. The rules for armies have been errated to stop you having multiple armies. So making a zombie army and an orc army just makes one orc/zombie army.

Feels bad cause he cost so much and the ward can be avoided with a board wipe. Also imagine playing this and getting counter spell
Be a shame if you can counterspell their counterspell or their board wipe. Oh right, it's magic arguments about how a card costs a lot.
@@blltsrrfrnd So you have to float an additional 2 mana to prep that counter spell. So in total you will need 8 mana. The worst part is that since the ring bearer make a creature legendary, someone could just sac a token with the ring on if they want to get rid of it. The effect is good but just get punish so hard. The moment you summon Sauron, your table will try to get rid of this because the army amass is very annoying

Why would you float mana for a counter spell....... also this claims to be a competitive deck tech, so 1 and 0 mana counters are aplenty.
I kind of like the Sauron thing but the rest is idk. Also the price made me immediately nope the heck out of this idea. And sure there are proxy's but me and my playgroup agree on "If one plays proxy's, we all can pretty much start drawing our own card's" my go to would be the "Insta Win T0" the cardtext would be like
"If you have 'Insta Win T0' on your starting hand, you win the game.
Your library may contain any number of 'Insta Win T0'."
I do get, if you own some of this hilarious expensive cards that you never would play them at any time but then, and only then i think you are allowed to use a proxy. Well at least our playgroup is handling it that way and we are pretty happy about that decision.

Largely due to the older cards, I highly recommend proxying this deck out.
Oracle and Adnauseum? 😴😴 Much cooler to run a Zombie Orc build utilising the Amass cards out of War of the Spark 👌
So what does Sauron? Nothing... Lame Combo shit whit the same cards than other Decks. No lore no cool Sauron Deck!
Maybe don't watch a cEDH video if you are going to complain about lack of lore in deckbuilding.

You could play any Grixis commander and their cEDH decklists would be like 80% the same. It's cEDH, you play the best cards in the colors and try to win very quickly with few exceptions. There were several cards he did add for the deck that wouldn't be in Kess, but if you want a more thematic and casual decklist then don't watch a cEDH video.
