- Watch as the 2024 Blue Angeles perform practice flights at NAF Centro in Southern California prior to starting the 2024 air show season. The flying sequences were shot on February 24th and 22nd. A few of my shots on the 24th didn't come out that great so I made a unique combination with shots from off base on the 22nd but in order! Also tail numbers on the jets are almost completely irrelevant during winter training.

Growing up just outside of the main gate of Andrew’s, I saw a lot of the Blue Angels and Thunderbirds as a kid. I remember getting in trouble in school because when I was supposed to be writing, I was drawing pics of the BA’s. Both inspire me just the same today as they did back then. You have a greater chance of becoming a major league pro athlete than you do of making it to one of the air demonstration teams. They are the absolute best of the best.
Spencer, your work never disappoints!!! Man, these are some of the best angles I think I've ever seen!!! And the sunrise shots are breathtaking!!!! Job well done!!!
Thanks for including the autograph line and capturing a few moments with 1 through 8, Spencer. I’ve always found it amazing how relaxed and friendly they can be immediately after putting their bodies and minds through an intense and physically demanding air show. I recently saw one of Michelle “Mace” Curran’s (Ex-Thunderbirds Lead Solo) interviews where she was asked if she missed flying the F-16. She said she missed the fan interaction and mission camaraderie but did not miss the wear and tear on her body from high Gs and flying inverted, but has no regrets.
Excellent video. Hearing the comms and "Boss" calling out maneuvers would have been a great addition.
I’ve seen a lot of BA videos over the years, and this is one of the best. Taking the opportunity to get the sunrise and the maintenance team shows your attention to detail. Well done!

My favorite “parts” were the four in formation reminding me of my 3 children now deceased and me at the front guiding them! While my two living children flew and danced around carrying the family torch! Then all of us coming back together! We all have followed the Blue Angels through out our lives and our Papa a US Navy vet served in Vietnam! Love you all you are part of our family!!!!! Hopefully we’ll see you in Annapolis in May! Academy Graduation!!!!

I live in Atmore, which is about 40 minutes away from Pensacola. I see them all the time as I am driving to and from work. I love the Blue Angels.
There is going to be a documentary on the Blue Angels at movie theaters in IMAX May 19. As a kid growing up on Oahu living on the slopes of Punchbowl cemetery where war veterans are buried, the Blue Angels use to put on a show for Memorial Day and they use to fly really low over our house. It was so awesome! I’ll never forget their performances and have the privilege to have them fly over our neighborhood. I had a great time as a kid in the 50’s.
Saw them perform in my town yesterday. Going back to see them today. Awesome!

I keep thinking about these pilots who make it to this tour. Can you imagine what it takes to fly as a BA? It is a lifetime achievement that ranks you the very best of the best. I feel proud for their families. If one of my kids did this, I WOULD BE SO HONORED.

Thank you for this excellent video with 2160p. I grew up watching the Blue Angels until I left for the Navy in 2005. I haven't seen them since then so it was nice to see an excellent video. Brings back my childhood memories.

Great video as always Spence. Well, it's just about airshow time! This looks like a good Festival of Flight this year, as it has a few more performers in contrast to the previous ones. Heritage Flight featuring the Raptor Demo Team, a Tac demo by VFA-122, a few warbirds flying representing Palm Springs Air Musueam, the Navy Leap Frogs and the Blues/Fat Albert. I'm hoping to make it this weekend. This is a great preview until then. ✌️💯🔥😎

Great video work as always!! ALMOST as good as being there. I've seen them for 30+ years and they already look smooth. I wished someone would work on the smoke system though. It's to intermittent.

If I may:
Please keep in mind that this IS Not an airshow. This is practice. There are a lot of hiccups throughout this video. This is precisely why the aviators/maintainers practice this two times a day at El Centro.
I promise that if you attend a show in person this season you will see a finally polished diamond (figuratively and literally).

I realize Top Gun focuses on combat mission and Blue Angels focus on flight demonstrations. Yet what are the primary differences between the two entities? Can a TG pilot be an a member of the BA without the interview process? Are the maneuvers between the TG and BA pilots the nearly the same?

Does anyone know why during the line abreast loop the smoke switches on and off for some jets?
During training they have to shut the smoke off to indicate they know they're out of position. You won't see that at a regular show.

No tail number for Lcdr Amanda Lee's plane ... backup plane?
was just gonna comment, her plane has no tail number...
It could just be her time to fly the back-up and get use to it before it's needed. As if a reg jet isn't available or needs to land during a show, they jump in the back-up to finish the show. So, each one needs to know how each operates. I seen where they flew two non-numbered planes in a show

@@andrewj9831 They go up 2 to 3 times a day for 2 1/2 straight months during winter training and use whatever jets are available at the time, so you'll see the correct numbers more often during the show season. You'll definitely see the weirdest number combinations at winter training.

The numbers don’t matter during winter training.
This is a “practice” airshow from their winter home. All of these things you might see on the aircraft will be sorted out before seasons start. That’s why they practice.
I saw the # 7 jet take off with the other solo... But clearly 5 & 6 are flying the solo.... And Amanda's jet is now a 2 seater ??? Her name is on it... ?

If you see anyone on the demo team flying the 7 jet it is because their usual jet is OTS. It’s in the very capable hands of our maintainers. This will be the same during the actual show season.
Amandas name will never appear on a substitute jet. She’s just borrowing it for the demo. Her jet needed a couple of hours with the maintainers.
Can I ask why no G suits
Trademark of the blue angels.
Because they rest their arm that's holding onto the center joystick on top of their thigh. A g-suit constantly inflating and deflating would move their arm too much. Not something you'd want happening when you're flying over 300kts 18 inches from each other.
These pilots sign a waiver that allows them not to fly with a g suit. As the person correctly stated above me, they are holding about 30 psi back pressure on that stick while performing. An inflatable bladder on your thigh could cause significant change to the control stick as that bladder inflates/deflates.
As a result of that waiver each pilot takes on perhaps the most grueling physical training while not in the air. Make no mistake-these men and women while not only very gifted aviators, are some of the best conditioned human beings on planet Earth.
why did they did away with the marine pilot?
I don't think it's fully ruled out for the future. I think since they transitioned to super hornets in 2021 it's just less likely to happen today.

I noticed. During my time in the Dutch Air Force I trained new personnel in aircraft recognition.
Keep in mind this is practice at El Centro. All those things with paint, numbers, getting the PA correct will be fixed before seasons start. This is why they practice!

Timing was way off by narrator when announcing pilot names. He was off by an entire jet for each. That’s why they practice
This event is the first time that the narrator is narrating before the public, so these things are to be expected.

The smoke must be perfect, or don't even bother....
During training they toggle the smoke on and off to indicate that they know they're out of position.

All due respect to number 7. I'm sure he's a fine officer and pilot. But with regard to his PA delivery he needs to put a little more pizazz into it. He needs to find his announcing voice. AAAAAAAAAnd now......LLLLLLLLadies and gentleman.....iiiiiiiits time to start the flying demonstration!!!!!!!!!!!!! With up and down voice inflection. He needs to listen to recordings of his predicessors.
This was his first time narrating in public.
