  • Blade Runner is often considered one of the most influential sci-fi movies. When the sequel Blade Runner 2049 was finally announced, die-hard fans of the original flick were overjoyed.
    Blade Runner 2049 had all the ingredients to be a great sequel. It brought back Harrison Ford to star alongside A-list stars Ryan Gosling and recent Oscar winner Jared Leto. It also brought in acclaimed director Denis Villeneuve who directed sci-fi movies like Arrival.
    But just like the original movie, Blade Runner 2049 performed poorly at the box office. Here is the real reason why Blade Runner 2049 flopped at the box office.

      Faithful to OG, so it's a little boring and kinda confusing. I'm not entirely sure why everybody wanted everyone else dead and I found it a bit hard to keep up with that storyline about replicant baby making . But hey, I love it. I do. The stunning cinematography, the intense soundscapes, the acting, the tone, those beautiful tints of human warmth amidst the soul crushing coldness of this uncomfortable, heavy and dystopian vision of the future. This is a masterpiece.

      Brilliant Masterpiece - In the discussion with Godfather Part II and Terminator 2 as the greatest sequels ever made. In terms of production and technology, its a game changer just like T2 was in 1991. Sadly, it won't get the appreciation it deserves while it's in theaters. This film demands to be seen on the big screen.

      Jordan Alamilla it’s worrying though that good movies do bad and bad movies do good at the box office. I though with Logan we took a step forward towards quality adult movies taking risks and being rewarded.... now this.
      Even Only the Brave was an awesome movie with great direction and performances, to say nothing of it not being a mindless teen movie like most... and it too bombed.
      The more this occurs, the more garbage and unoriginality, playing it safe, less risk taking well see. Disappointing

      May I add a few more reasons that make BR2049 a bit unsatisfying....1) Ryan Gosling. Oh! How I wish Jared Leto could have played the leading role! He will bring depth and some humour to the character 2) And Niander Wallace could have played by some actor much older than Leto. Wallace is a super rich and successful businessman. He cannot be that young. And also too young to enjoy cold blooded killing of the replicants (he killed a new Nexus, and a Rachael's clone for no reasons other than anger/disappointment). How miscast it was !

      @@pmm1767 Very true and I agree. I'm currently overweight with a beard as well and loved 2049 and was so impressed and consider Blade Runner the original a pretty broken movie with a broken narrative and choppy story telling whereas this one was very smooth with much better actors and acting. 2049 covered a lot more cool science fiction themes, ideas, technologies, concepts.
      So are you familiar with the 4 major Blade Runner properties?
      The Book, The First Film, The Computer Game, The Second Film. There are other things in between but those are the 4 big experiences and renditions of the world and its themes, which do you think is best?
      I think, even though I enjoyed what I was able to play of the game and liked feeling part of the world, its much more easy to just sit back and enjoy a film play out. So my favorite for the sake of ease might be the 2049 film. There are alot of visuals and things very impressive for the date of release of the original film that I liked, and we got some of that here in 2049. Maybe they should consider also making an animation or something to depict other stories set in the world or through its historic periods.
      What characters and performances would you rank from best to worst?
      I think I enjoyed the 2049 character of Luv as well as Joi as an exploration of two types of future beings. I think in 2049 I liked Wallace or whatever the least and I didn't think the performance of the Madam police boss lady was giving off enough, but a lot of the humans in the upper ranks were more restrained and held back than the androids and I think that was part of what they had been instructed ti act like but maybe weren't pulling it off well or it justs ends up being a little too bland for my tastes, whereas Wallace was just seeming like too silly or unbelievable and put on for my tastes. Luv I thought was awesome though and expressing and exhibiting lots of interesting stuff and Joi had some good scenes to show her "feelings" as advanced AI. One could say the Madam had her chances and did fine like in her scene with K in his apartment or wherever it was but I think I was just sort of bored mainly and would've preferred these European schools of acting performances instead. The acting is far superior overall though than in the older Blade Runner which was pretty bad seeming in some cases, but I liked Harrison Ford's costumes more than his ultra realistic home style, though if it was really real and warm enough he might be totally naked and that would've been pretty entertaining to have old Harrison Ford running around nude after K lol.
      I bought all the films after seeing 2049 on Netflix as it was put up on there now.

      It was lazily written for a dumb audience. That's why I didn't enjoy it. You cotton on to Ryan Gosling being the special boy as soon as you see the date and know that there's a special child. Then there's 45 minutes of Gosling confirming this, it's terrible pacing, everything of narrative interest takes place in the last half (maybe even last third). The twist that the woman briefly met in said 45 minutes was in fact the special child has no impact as you spend very little time with the character. The repeated use of the trope of robot women made to be the perfect subservient woman without any commentary on that trope adds nothing to cinema, other than yet another example of blatant disregard for women as human beings with an implication that men don't know how to have emotional relationships (which is dehumanising for both). The father-son relationship narrative is so horrifically overused in Hollywood, and again they use it but make no commentary on it. It was a very narratively clichéd film that didn't manage to emotionally engage either me or the friend I watched it with (in I-Max). It is nicely shot though, and the setting is created in a believable fashion.

      @testosteronic Před 6 lety +1

      Cy The Grate you've missed read my comment - I got the answer as soon as it was implied, I wasn't waiting for an explanation, I was waiting for the narrative to move on. The issue is they spent 45 minutes explaining something I had immediately understood, I imagine anyone who can follow logic immediately understood. I'm happy with a slow delivery, I don't need instant gratification, I am with you on the idea that patience pays off. Also I paid £9 for the I-Max screening. And tired tropes are tired tropes regardless of your politics.

      @Peter A. Well it takes a lot of inspiration from poetry, books, philosophers, and it's own lore very well. An example being the baseline test being a direct reference to Voitt Kampffs test, and also quotes "A tall white fountain plate" from a book called Pale Fire, WHILE also showing how the old test from the last movie has changed developed over time: instead of trying to find a lack of human emotion it's been redesigned to recognize when a replicant has too much human emotion.
      It also explores complex themes like what it means to be human, which every character in the movie makes you question, like Joi who seems to have real human emotion and love but ultimately is programmed to feel that way, or how CEO of Tryrell shows less human emotion than someone like K, who's a replicant.
      Not only that but the acting is superb and the cinematography is absolutely beautiful along with the sets, and music. This movie is honestly oozing with aesthetic, that I'm sure even you cannot deny.

    I think the biggest factor was the run time. You have to realize that it's paced just like the first Blade Runner. Seeing that critics loved it, I think a lot of people were more hyped up for it. Before you watch Blade Runner 2049 if you haven't already, realize that it's NOT an action film. It's a sci-fi noir film that gives out questions and provokes the viewer to have their own interpretation. This movie is a masterpiece. One of the best sequels, if not, the best. By itself it's also a fantastic movie.

    You see, if Blade Runner 2049 would've catered to a larger audience, in a sense making it more easy to digest or understand and more PG13, the whole story would have been watered down. This call for a broader appeal is unbareable and the exact reason why there are mediocre and lame movies. This is basically an argument for only making films like Transformers.

    • @rickymartin4457
      @rickymartin4457 Před 6 lety +9

      Call for broader appeal = we are dumb, make something easy for us to understand.
      What do people easily understand today? Lots of explosions means cool. Lots of action, surley needed. Make main character crack jokes in the most dangerous situations to make him look cool. Look up public opinion on youtube by bro-dudes explaining why the new action-schmok is filled with so much testosterone and coolness and cool visuals of explosions.
      I shake in horror if I imagine how the new Blade Runner would have turned out if they shortened the movie, rushed through everything and added more of Officer K kicking ass, showing how badass and how mean and coldblooded he is, so cool!
      Sorry for the rant.

      You mean the replicant that got produced and then "quality controlled" by Wallace? It was to show what kind of person Wallace is and how he values something not up to his standards. It was also the first time we saw how a replicant gets "born". Does that answer your question?

    • @dialecticalmonist3405
      @dialecticalmonist3405 Před 6 lety

      +Ricky Marin
      I am still genuinely confused by it. I can't find the script online, and I don't remember what he said. Did he say that she was not "up to quality"? I'm confused, I'm not trying to be sexual, but she was very attractive, right? I don't understand how that's not up to his "standards." Did she have a flaw?
      It just seems utterly grotesque, which is only acceptable if it's creating a powerful point.
      So he's "really bad," uh... OK, and how exactly does this fact impact us later in the movie?
      I know he says, "You don't know pain" later on, so we know he means business, but that entire grotesque 10 min sequence was required just to gain that believability?
      Gutting a beautiful woman, standing their naked, I mean REALLY?
      I don't think the character got any more "scary" than he already was. I would have believed the guy when he said, "You don't know pain" anyway, regardless of what he did before that.
      I'm sorry, but it just didn't have a point. Unless there is some metaphor that I am not seeing, that scene has no excuse to be in there.
      If she was FLAWED. Like missing an arm, or SOMETHING like that, then I could see it, but... no, that was highly disturbing with almost zero pay off.

    • @rickymartin4457
      @rickymartin4457 Před 6 lety +5

      I think it's really commendable, that you already put a lot of thought into this, and yes it was disturbing.
      Here's what I understood from this scene you're free to agree or disagree:
      First, if you look at Niander Wallace's clothing, you will notice he wears some zen master like robes. Now I'm no expert in east asian/japanese culture, but I know that zen is a form of meditation, finding inner balance, being at peace with oneself. That and the architecture inside his corporation, which is very sparse and reduced, really the opposite to Tryell's opulent interiors, resounds probaply quite good and considering he's blind that'd make sense, so he can hear every step you take inside. The still water and his "stone" drones, which even make sounds like some stones are rubbed together, further reinforce the japanese zen feel. So he basically sees himself as a person who's quite balanced and self-controlled or at least tries to archieve this.Also the way he talks and his Jesus like haircut shows how he thinks of himself as some kind of god, messiah.
      Now to the actual scene:
      You're right he didn't mutter anything that has to do with quality standards. Instead he explained us how important it was for his goals to have the knowledge to produce replicants that can reproduce. As he touches the belly of the replicant, as if to feel if she could be pregnant, he expresses his dissapointment that he still can't make replicants that are able to reproduce. Does he get angry? Does he show any kind of emotion?
      No, he has himself under control so he kills her in coldblood. That's how Niander Wallace show's how he's not satisfied with his "product". He simply destroys his "angel", he can do whatever he wants with his creations.
      The point of this scene is to learn how important the "child" to Wallace is, what his goals are, and his complete disregard for life he created. So in conclusion I woudn't say that this was an unimportant scene, however if it is a well written character or if Jared Leto gave a good performance is a whole other story.

I flopped because most people drift off if you can't explain something to them in one simple sentence i.e. Giant robots from outer space than can disguise themselves as cars come to Earth and smash the shit out of one and other... Don't get me wrong -- Denis Villeneuve is a directing MACHINE (the guy makes a film every year) and they're all phenomenal, though I doubt they're quite as popular to the masses as Christopher Nolan's works.

      Peter I think you are spot on. The real reason is that the movie didn’t drum up enough interest to mainstream audiences! The reasons marked in this video are way overthought, as if people research a movie like they are purchasing a brand new vehicle! Most people going to the cinema don’t dig that deep into such a decision. I didn’t see it even though I wanted to badly. I was surprised to see it gone from the limelight so fast! And today it started airing on Comcast included-free-now-HBO! Why, because I don’t know anyone in my area who’d even watch a sci-fi movie not named Star Wars!

    For me the slow pace gives you time to appreciate the gravitas of every scene. Goslings character was quiet but the wheels were turning constantly and you had the opportunity to figure it out with him rather than have it all neatly explained. Perfect example was when he found the horse, the moment his world view fell apart; in terms of events it could have all happened in two minutes but that long introspective scene gave you a sense that he didn't want to face up to this reality, it was in effect the death and rebirth of his character. It takes confidence to make a film with so much empty space, handing much of the gravitas over to the audience's imagination. It didn't tell you what to feel, but gave you the space to feel it for yourself. If you found the slow pace boring, you weren't thinking!

    All the reasons stated for its failure, are exactly the reasons why I loved it. The movie stayed true to its roots and didn't fall foul to all the usual rehashed, watered down, ruinous BS that so many other franchises fall victim to. For this, it is likely to be well remembered in future. I suspect that it will be a slow-burn like the original. While it might not reach the heights of greatness that the first film achieved, I personally feel that it came close. It was a worthy companion and I have no regrets that it didn't appeal to the masses.

      I really don't get what's awesome about it. You can find better, deeper SciFi themed questions about humanity in the Black Mirror series. Hell, even Rick and Morty series has deeper questions than this movie. Yes the visuals are artistic, but they're also shallow because they're utterly without reasoning. Why should the world has an overly dark and dank atmosphere? It's a high tech world, and it's shown that they did not lose their technological ability. Can't they afford decent lighting and designers? Had they lose all knowledge of human psyche? If they can project giant holograms, why don't they cover the gray buildings with projections of forest or gardens? I understand compromising some realism for style, but at that level it's just so ridiculous that it feels like a lazy shortcut. The whole length of the movie I kept thinking: Sure it's very evocative, but why does it have to be like that? It doesn't make any sense.

      Actually, 2049, much like the original, was a commercial flop. Keep in mind reported budget only includes production budget, and not the advertising budget. Add to the fact studios, on average, only recoup roughly half of the box office gross (with the rest going to the theater), and thus a typical film usually needs to make double it's production budget before it even starts to break even at the box office.

    All in all, either the third movie is also gonna be as great as this movie with again the huge risk of becoming a flop, or it's just gonna be a badly executed swan's song and I don't want the latter to happen

      Mark NiEls actually it was number 1 at the box office opening weekend. If anything people were reluctant to see a nearly 3 hour film that's a sequel to an 80s film that has cool visuals. Just trying to give their perspective.

    In a way, I'm even glad to see this film flop at the start. Don't get me wrong, I've seen the film and to my mind it was amazing, in some points even better than the original. But now studio bosses consider the sitution as a commercial failure, which means that the Blade Runner universe is relatively safe from the flood of stupid blank sequels and side-films made just for money.

      The background is amazing but I don't like it. They can cut the budget in half and deliver the same amazing effects IMO. I believe in detail which it was horrible compare to the original. The music is not bad but don't have the vibe. The story is great and the meaning and questions are there as expected. However I'd say it didn't build onto it much. It felt like it's 2 years after the first movie. The 30 years of changing the back ground didn't change much at all. Which is a shame…

    "Too Faithful"? How about we stop catering to short-attention spans, target markets, and profit obsession and start encouraging directors, script-writers, and actors who decide to be faithful to an existing story and concept while furthering the mythos with original content? Reviews like this are part of the problem.

      That said, I will go through that length of the movie is worth it and my god BR 2049 was more than worth it. The pacing was perfect - and that's coming from someone who tend to dislike slow movies.

    Not only is it a masterpiece, it is the *only* modern sequel of a classic that lives up to and in some ways even improves upon the original. Also, the movie is good where it matters not relying on effects and visual splendour even though those are outstanding. The characters and the story had me completely immersed. One of Ford's best performances ever, with the rest of the cast delivering at the same level of excellence. Luv (Hoeks) and Wallace (Leto) were mesmerizing.

    Best Harrison Ford performance I've seen since The Mosquito Coast, not an easy viewing popcorn film, this one makes you think a bit for a change, great visuals along with a great story, this film is definitely up there with Ex Machina and Interstellar, people who went to the theater to watch this film were also well behaved, not a single phone light in the dark, everybody in silence, full attention, that was something I haven't experience in a theater for years, so yes I loved this film, a rare gem among the coal.

You know they will release another in two years and the story will be a carbon copy of 1,2,3,4,5 or 6. And this movie can be rewatched with easy. Sure I'm going to buy a copy. Mark G Not true. Some films burn out fast. Others thread along steadily and make a decent amount of money after 2-3 months or so. My Big Fat Greek Wedding only made $0,8 million in its opening week (ranked 20th that week) and went on to make $240 million in North America alone. Tangled made a measly $19 million in its opening week (ranked 4th that week) but went on to make $201 million in North America and $592 million worldwide.
      Blade Runner 2049 stayed at #1 in many countries in its second week and is 2nd in the North American box office. Had it dropped to 6th to 9th you'd have a point.
