The great Welsh-American baritone Thomas L. Thomas sings three songs from his native Wales. Morfa Rhuddlan Ar Hyd Y Nos Suo-Gan Link to Thomas L. Thomas playlist: www.youtube.com...
Diolch o galon - deepest thanks. Mr Thomas has a very pure Welsh - with a soft South Wales accent. He was 12 when his family emigrated from the Welsh coal-mining community of Maesteg to Scranton, Pennsylvania. Their new home was in the heart of the Welsh community in the USA. Mr Thomas's father had been active in the Welsh Eisteddfodau - cultural festivals. Welsh seems to have remained a family language for the Thomas family even in Pennsylvania.
As an 86yr old American of Welsh Decent on both sides. Fondly recall as a youth visiting Grandparents, Wm.P. Williams and Ellen Rowlands in their summer cottage. They had an old victrola and a collection of his records. What a Voice!
I was born and raised in South Wales and emigrated to Canada in my 20's after serving in the British Army (a Welsh Regiment of course). It's nice to read all the comments from non-Welsh people and the interest that Welsh culture and music is evoking internationally, considering Wales is such a tiny country with only 2.7 million people. (Continued)
(Continued) I go home when I can to settle my 'Hiraeth' (Welsh word for homesickness) and although I don't regret emigrating and have long become a Canadian Citizen, Welsh culture and the fundamental need to listen to the language; especially put to music, never fades!
Just wonderful renditions of these beautiful Welsh folksongs. Wales has produced such a tremendous number of superb singers.I would surmise that only Italy has produced more. Both countries have tremendous singing traditions. Thanks so much for sharing these superb pieces
Thomas L.Thomas is my great uncle/had a brother George/ Dad was a harpist Harp is in Clarks Summit,Pa. My sister Lynn played after taking lessons from Josiah.Thomas was my voice coach Barb Hudson/Walbridge,Oh

Does anyone remember The great Welshman barítone Mostyn Thomas? The original barítonefor whom The miner collected compres to Have him trained. A huge , wonderful Voice I Heard once, late 1940's When he re visited The Valleys. I Had several of his EARLY 78 recordings But I lent them to Gwyn a Thomas, who lent them to Richard Burton who died so I never got them back! Desmond Watkins
Morfa Rhuddlan: Black be the day and accurst be the story, Tyrants have vanquish'd the sons of the free, At our destruction, the sun veil'd his glory, Proud foemen's swords must our yoke henceforth be! Fiends howl'd with joy on the red field of slaughter, Wolves and owls search'd for their prey 'mong the brave, Liberty weeps o'er the marsh of old Rhuddlan, When thy fair Freedom is sunk in the grave. Deep may the marsh be o'erwhelmed by the ocean, Open, oh Neptune, the gates of thy deep: Fast on the harps of our bards tears are flowing, Rise, Lord, nor let now thy dread vengeance sleep! Once more I'll gaze on yon dark scene of slaugher, Freedom unconquer'd but sleeps in her grave, Better to die neath old Rhuddlan's still water, Calm is that sleep for the sons of the brave! ...profoundly beautiful
Wow, thank you for sharing these marvellous songs. I had never heard of Thomas L. Thomas until now, and am stunned by the beauty of his voice. It's beyond words. Thank you so very much :)
Thanks so much for this. My mum and dad had a record of his with these and other Welsh songs, now gone, so it's great to hear them again after many years.
You're entitled to your opinion, but I love the quality of his voice just the way it was. If he had become a tenor, and had to strain for those high C's...well, no. I don't like the thought of that at all.
@@ellynmacgregor8210 Thank you. I have a very light voice like this, but I cannot sing tessitura of a tenor. And while better training may iron out the issues on the high end, there is no guarantee of that, and I fear people won't accept me singing baritone repertoire.
One of the most glorious and elegant singers ever. His rendering of Scottish songs is beyond belief.

How is his Welsh? Do you think he actually spoke it? Very few from his generation in Maesteg did...

Glorious voice, but that's a very lyric baritone. Probably should have become a tenor.
