I'm tragically late to this comment section, but I wanted to remind you all of Beard After Dark, as well as the moment when Nate comes into the office and finds Beard and says, "Did you sleep here?" and Beard replies with, "Perchance to dream here?" which is a line from the "To be or not to be" speech in Hamlet. “To die, to sleep - to sleep, perchance to dream - ay, there’s the rub, for in this sleep of death what dreams may come…”
I always took this to mean that Beard is dancing, perennially on a knifes edge between life and death. He doesn't see much value in himself, except in his value to Ted...so that one little throwaway line, "Perchance to dream here" clued me in to Beard's entire psyche. He keeps choosing life, because he fears what might happen if he dies...like Hamlet, he fears the potential of dreaming in death...but we see, and know, from the Beard After Dark episode that he has suicidal ideations and he is definitely self destructive.
We go a lot of hints. They just weren't obvious hints.

I think what’s especially beautiful about this moment is that Coach Beard has always had a comedically terrifying presence on the show. Usually he’s a form of comic relief and is the yin to Ted’s yang in their friendship. But the only reason he hated Nate for so long after his heel-turn was because he saw a part of his past self he didn’t like in Nate’s betrayal.
And it was because he was so loyal to Ted that he was hurt by Nate hurting Ted.
It was by that same loyalty to Ted, though, that he realized he needed to forgive Nate after Ted reminded him of Nate’s humanity and vulnerability.

They're brothers, one people, Coach Beard didn't just explain his back story he explained Nates current story and through that empathy and connection revealed their situations are mirrored. It hurt Coach Beard not just because of his own pain/memory but to see someone else fall in the same way. The life parts up to Nate but the important part is not giving up, big big theme here. What surprised me was how many times the writers saw the cheap easy scene and then figured out a better scene that actually felt more natural and fit the characters. Beard head-butting Nate would have been slapstick and make Beard less believable. What he did was both character defining (revealing) but also character affirming (it followed Beard's past nature).
      😁
It's one of my favorite scenes too.

Nate was stuck with the expectation of culture, get hurt for causing pain in others. Coach Beard has also his entire life been a victim of that expectation. The show is, IMHO, about Ted revealing to people that the "should ofs" and "expectations" are all nonsense. You can forgive your buddy after he steals your car after you let him crash because the bigger picture is more important than the reactionary emotion. Because being GOOD isn't about rewards and damn well isn't easy, sometimes being good can put your life at risk.
The writers here, IMHO, started with the perception of expectations with Nate (his fear and even after the job offer his desire to be punished according to culture) start us off feeling that way... that he's going to get what he deserves and thats the beauty of everything in this show.
Coach Beard came to visit the turn coat at his front door to give him what he deserved is actually what did happen and it was a F'n Hug.

Coach Beard is an enigma. I want his whole back story depicted on film or in print. Idc which. I don't think he really blinked once in this brief monolog. Spectacular performance.

If you notice the music has a harsh sort of horror 'twang' at the beginning but then becomes eerily quiet. The music only comes back in when Beard starts talking about being sent to prison.

love the reference to previous season where nate asked roy to headbutt him for kissing keeley. shows nate believes he needs to be punished for his mistakes when that's not always the case.

Second chances are not something that are easy.
It's a kind of leap of faith on the person receiving that doesn't always pan out, and can hurt like hell when it doesn't.
But at the end of the day, what the person does with the second chance reflects on them. And whether you choose to give that second chance in the first place reflects on you, and you are not gullible or weak for offering that chance.
(and that doesn't mean you can't also take precautions when giving that second chance. I'm willing to bet Ted was forgiving as ever, but also made sure to keep a close eye on his car keys for a good long while).
