    Mantronik was way ahead of his time. Influcenced so many producers, Timbaland, Manny Fresh, Mr.Mixx, Swizz Beats,Magic Mike and so many others . Mantronik and Larry Smith greatest of all time hip hop producers.

    Your favorite producer’s favorite producer doesn’t get the recognition he deserves in the USA. In the UK, however, they recognized his genius from the beginning! And so glad you mentioned that trap crap-when I first heard it all I could think of was how the King of the Beats was copied and thought it was 1985 again because in THOSE days the sound was revolutionary! Peace.

      i thought the same in regards to Trap and Drill, the music is just so, so limited. King of the beats is a BEAST as is Bass Machine, Killa tune

      I agree with all that. I saw him live in 86. He was already doing what people would regard as Trap patterns in 85, a lot of his stuff back then predates Aphex Twin, Dubstep etc. The guy was insanely ahead of his time, especially given what he had to do to achieve some of that.

      @@dizmop King of the beats is a classic but I dont think its the best representation of his skills given that it's mostly a breakbeat compilation. His real genius was in his drum machine programming.

    1985 mantronix was it, that was my favorite album. Then a year later I heard a song called " party people" by royal house aka Todd Terry. For me that was the end of my mantronix obsession and the beginning of my Todd Terry obsession.

    It's so cool to hear from Mantronik. I was always so interested to hear about him and how this all happened. I would have killed to go see a Mantronix concert back in the day. I was a huge fan and still am. I hope he does more interviews and puts out some more Hip Hop.

      One of my favorite music producers !!
      I am forever grateful to him for all the great things he has given to the hip-hop and dance, R&B scene in the 80s.
      And then I think about the artists like Nocera (summertime), Joyce Simms (All and all) Chandra Simmons (never gonna let you go), Just-ice, Tla Rock, Terry Billy, it was a fantastic and unforgettable time for my generation (born 1968).
      I will never forget Mantronix concert, in January 1987 Europe, was very impressive. Kurtis thanks !!!!!!!

      Seen Mantronix at the Uptown theater philly version of the Apollo first time i seen an 808 up front Fresh Gordon was playing it for Gordys Groove the bass and snare slaps on that song imagine that live was incredible LL was there too.

    Thank you Vinyl Esquire. I waited so long to hear from one of my favorite producers. His music and life in Bushwick Brooklyn just went together. I love the 80s sound and it's sad that with so much motivation and positive vibes for Kurtis to launch into hip hop in 2020 Covid threw everything off. It's ok...for the fans who have waited for Mantronix all these years..it's worth the wait. How I would love to hear a Kanye/Mantronik collab....or Drake. His sound was made for both.

    One of my favorite Dj, producer of all time. I feel as though he and Mc Tee don’t get the recognition they deserve being contributor’s to the hiphop culture. I don’t care what anyone says, Mantronik sonically changed the game when they came out, period. Still to this day, I have all of their music on vinyl and cassette from 1985 on up. Word

    i met Kurtis at a record store in Bmore they were promoting In Full Effect album he was very shy and quiet and i asked him what kind of sampler was he using .. i forgot the name but he told me it was a old unit but this was back in 1988 he was cool

    I was 15 years old when I bought the Mantronix tape cassette. When I heard get stupid fresh it forever changed my life. When I heard Put that record back on and Bass machine ever beat from then to this day as a producer all my beats have to be hard. Simple beats just dont do it for me so see I am cursed by Mantronic'isum 😁

    This is a real lesson for new artists, & how label can treat them.
    I once heard a story that sometime during his '85 - '88 period, he was sleeping in the studio, BC he had so many projects on the go!
    I think he made his best tunes, when he wasn't being paid full money.

    I remember purchasing "Mantronix The Album" at this local record store near the harbor in Camden NJ (1986). I still play Mantronix in my sets every opportunity I get in 2022!

    thanks for the interview from you both, soooo so so so many memories of my high school years, walkin' the streets, they would let us, they would move the tables and chairs in the Chick.Fil.A in the mall so we could break dance, we were at the track meets breakin' and lockin' to Mantronix, needless to say before the bell rang before first period we would be in the back hallways breakin' to Mantronix....
    just to hear this kid's voice after all these years is like hearin' Jesus speak.... after Sleeping Bag and Music Madness ll seems like he just fell off "a planet fresh" ....
