  • When it comes to reading, what is the best way to go about learning it? There have been debates on the approaches in reading for years and the pendulum swings back and forth, though one has fallen out of favor as the primary approach. There are two main approaches to reading: whole language and phonics. Let’s look at them both.

    This is a great break down of the two approaches, thank you!! I’m a mom of a fifth grader who loves to read but struggles with spelling. The more I dig in to find the best ways to help him, the more I learn about all this stuff. Thanks!

    My two older boys were in elementary school in the late 70's and learned reading with phonics. My second oldest was reading chapter books on his own in first grade. My third son was in kindergarten/first grade in the late 80's when his school began using the whole language method. He struggled terribly with learning to read. His teacher reccomended that he go to "special" reading classes. Sadly, this affected my sons self esteem as he had to leave his classroom and friends to attend his "special" reading class. Thankfully, the special class was teaching reading with phonics. My son picked it up immediately and was soon the best reader in his class. He excelled academically all the way through high school and graduated from college with an English/Literature degree! Needless to say I'm a proponent of phonics, but the hybrid method sounds like a good alternative to the either/or methods and could be beneficial for all learners.

      Thank you for sharing your experience. I know of children who have learned to read well with the whole language.... But the vast majority is with phonics first. I think mixing it can be beneficial but with a heavier focus on phonics first.

    Whole language (words) can be easily taught at home or through general exposure (media/TV/general awareness), introducing phonics to children requires specially trained teachers (ordinarily all parents are not) well equipped or trained to administer phonics approach. Given that children spend 75% time at home and only 25% at school, this only means that whether or not the phonics advocates like it or not, a large amount of exposure of children is to whole language. Therefore as you also rightly observed I believe there are practical reasons that the debate Whole Vs Phonics must end!! For delivering justice to science of reading, embracing the "Hybrid" approach is not only just, but is also the right thing to do for practical reasons.

      The whole word method gets you only as far as the next word you have never seen.
      To a student of phonics,
      new words can be
      pronounced successfully.
      Listening to the product of
      Whole Word Reading is tortuous for students, teachers
      and parents.
      Whole Word Reading is
      Child Abuse that
      Keeps Kids Stupid,
      Remaining Ignorant and Incompetent as government
      Rescued with phony compassion.
      Literacy is THE Lifeline to a
      Lifetime of Learning.
